Just gotta chime in, I like Rose. So Rose has one fan at least, hah. Those parts in MGS2 when her and Raiden were getting all romantic, bringing out the smooth, while cheesy, are pretty great.

From: XIII_rocks | #253 2 was the first game that I ever played to absolutely blow me away.
Mostly this. It wasn't the first to, but I finished MGS1 thinking "Well that was a damn good game", I finished MGS2 (and 3 and 4) going "holy s*** holy s***"

2's problems are numerous - I'll just name the sub-par main (realistic my ass, lol), the many stupid conversations with Rose, the terrible bosses (lol Dead Cell - when Fatman is the best character of them, you know something's wrong), the absolutely pointless final battle (you and Solidus are both against the Patriots, there was no point whatsoever in killing each other), the ridiculous "Liquid takes the inifinitely more badass Ocelot over through his arm" plotline (though Kojima ultimately fixed it). Snake's badassery and the fact you could make Raiden think stuff like "Why don't you do it?" and other complaints with R2 or whatever when AI Campbell asked you to do something are a couple of fun things I can remember, but there certainly weren't enough of them to make up for the bad ones.

That was the point where you could tell that the writers had figured out Solidus was actually the good guy in the situation, and they had to fix it in a hurry. 'By the way, Jack, I have to kill you to get the Macguffin out of your blood. And I killed your parents. And your dog.'

We are thought, and reality, and concept, and the unimaginable
MGS2's biggest problems were numerous codec sequences and Big Shell's design. Tanker is the most well-designed area in the series, but Big Shell leaves something to be desired.
The Tanker is MGS gameplay at its finest. Everything just works so well there. MGS2's gameplay is still the overall best in the series, so combining that with some great level design just makes it shine. MGS3 had some good areas, too, but nothing that's Tanker tier. Best setting is Shadow Moses, though!
Why would you say MGS2's gameplay is the best in the series? I've typically found that I enjoy at least the main four games in the series more and more with each passing installment when it comes to the gameplay itself if nothing else.

I have a small soft spot for the Big Shell just because the setting is technically New York City and that's where I'm from. But that should hardly count -- and besides it applies to the Tanker too.

MGS2 works so well, I think, because it's designed around its own limitations. The design of Big Shell, the AI of the guards, the bosses -- everything is designed perfectly around all the tools you're given. I think it's the best representation of 'classic' MGS-style stealth. It's simple but complex enough to be interesting to mess around with. It took all the ideas MGS1 had and expanded on them. MGS3's gameplay is good in its own right, but that's about the point that the series started going off in all kinds of different directions, and getting bogged down with unnecessary baggage. I think it's up there with MGS1 and MGS3, despite all the story and presentation issues it suffers from, solely because it's gameplay is so good. Gotta do the VR Missions in Substance to really appreciate how good it is, I think!
