The Wire is not a "Something happen every episode" show.

You need to look at each season of The Wire as 1 Episode.

Watch the whole episode before you judge it.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this isn't a troll topic.

You talk about how it's like "reading half a book and then finishing it until the end"; except that it's not. You watched six episodes of a season that, while excellent in its own right, is in many respects mere exposition to the excellence of later seasons. Here are some trends in the show, however, that never change:

-a slow, methodical pace
-driven by character drama over plot drama
-lots and lots of characters and relationships to remember

If these things prevent you from enjoying what is universally regarded (even in this topic, except for yourself!) as an amazing piece of television, then I suppose it's your right not to continue.

I'd also recommend looking into Michael Bay's Complete Works.

I love character drama/relationships. I just dont think 13 hour long episodes of "exposition" is "BEST TV SHOW EVER" worthy. in fact, I'd go as far as to say it makes it one of the worst.

Yeah, just jump in the deep end. Go right into Season 4. I did it. My first season was S3. I watched all the episodes in three days with no idea what it was other than a show on HBO with a bunch of guys who were on Oz. The next three or four months were watching S4 as it aired, and S1 & 2 on Netflix. So I can't really say I've had that experience trying S1 for the first time.

What could be wrong with it? It allows for a much deeper, intricate, and satisfying show than any of the more episodic shows where each episode has to end on a cliff-hanger to keep audiences tuning in. I love Mad Men but it has nothing on The Wire.

Also Party Down is great but it's not even in the top 100 shows of all time, much less the top 3.

I love serialization. In fact, I love it so much that I don't really enjoy movies any more, because they can't develop nearly the way a TV show can.

but that's no excuse to film 13 hours of almost nothing. that's wasteful and stupid.

If you watch S4, I think you might enjoy S4, I think more "happens in each episode". You might decide to give the series another chance. Thats what I hope anyway.

Also

Wire Season 4 > 3 > 1 > 2 > 5

yep.

never said it was top 3 (though it's probably close on my list). I just have a huge man-crush on adam scott.

and no matter how many times I watch it, it makes me laugh harder than any other show (Except maybe archer. I have a very difficult time deciding which show I think is funnier)

I'll probably try watching season 4 at some point. but as I've said before, I have no problem with there being episodes which not much happens except character/relationship development or whatever.

but when nothing happens in 6 hour long episodes, that I have a problem with

you keep saying that it takes hours and hours to get to the good bits

it does not

there's good bits in every episode. in every minute.

But the satisfying thing about the Wire is how it all comes together.

Everyone has said this already, but if you watched the first half of the first season (or heck, the first half of the second season too for that matter), you won't be satisfied because you can't see how things come together. If the show didn't intrigue you the first half, then obviously it isn't for you. I'm not denying that. But to say 'nothing happens' while there's probably happening more in one episode of The Wire than half a season of Mad Men (and that is one of my favourite shows too, but it's completely different) is just ridiculous.

I haven't. Sure, I'm playing it up a bit but I really believe it's not a good show.

and, Sbell, as far as TV shows I think are better than the wire:

Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Party Down
Archer
Parks N Rec
certain seasons of Skins
Fawlty Towers
Wilfred (AU)
Twin Peaks
Misfits
Louie
BSG (excluding season 4, again)
Cowboy Bebop
Californication (yep)
Veronica Mars

and lost more I can't remember right now!

(pretty much every show I've watched all the way through. though I never actually finished BSG because it got so terrible at the end)

And I really hate it when people call The Wire slowpaced

it is not. They just delve deeper into the details than any other show I've seen. They don't tend to focus on action too much. If you call that slow paced, then sure. But there's lots more going on in one season of the wire than there is in multiple seasons of other shows. Which is why the show tends to be so satisfying when you (or someone like McNulty) connect all the dots

This is a fairly valid point. I dont consider it slow paced because there's no action, though.

but I still firmly believe that the "pulling together of all the little details" does not excuse nothing very interesting happening halfway into the season

If you mean with interesting some kind of stunning revelation or action scene, then yeah, no. But I'd say there's lots of interesting stuff going on in the first half of season one. Which is very much so the worst part of the show (only gets better from there), but still really enjoyable for me.
