I watched all the episodes in three days with no idea what it was other than a show on HBO with a bunch of guys who were on Oz. The next three or four months were watching S4 as it aired, and S1 & 2 on Netflix. I love Mad Men but it has nothing on The Wire. But the satisfying thing about the Wire is how it all comes together. Everyone has said this already, but if you watched the first half of the first season (or heck, the first half of the second season too for that matter), you won't be satisfied because you can't see how things come together. If the show didn't intrigue you the first half, then obviously it isn't for you. I'm not denying that. They don't tend to focus on action too much. If you call that slow paced, then sure. But there's lots more going on in one season of the wire than there is in multiple seasons of other shows.
