I'm just saying, the show is very dense and hard to get into. I actually stopped and started the first season about three times before I really got into it. I liked it plenty each time I watched it but sort of lost interest after a while. The first time's the toughest since there's so much to wrap your head around. Going back to it later sometimes helps since you already a good idea of who some of the characters are and what they're doing. You'll be more familiar and able to invest more in it earlier. At least this is how it worked for me. It's all the little things that are the most interesting.

ph yeah, another show that sucks: Dexter

good premise, one that should have been entirely effortless to do well, but they absolutely ruined it with his inner monologue. it was so poorly done.

inner monologues can be done well (veronica mars!), but dexter did not do that.

I was actually pissed off watching it because the premise has so much damn potential.

Funny, because that's one of the reasons people actually like that show. It's problems are completely unrelated to Dexter himself and are due to focusing on all the side characters.

hey pxl

just wanted to let you know I completely agree with you. I watched the first 6 episodes of the show and was completely bored the entire time, and since then I've never tried again. I love slow-paced shows, and I love character development, but there wasn't a single character that I even remotely cared about, nor any scenes that I ever found interesting.

and this is coming from someone who watches tons and tons of tv, I've watched dozens of complete series in the past few years, I've never seen a show that I didn't at least find somewhat likeable, and I've never watched any other show that I found so completely mundane that I was unable to continue watching it.

and to this day I still can't imagine any other show being as bad as those first 6 episodes of the wire. I get that the argument is that the show is technically well-made, and its realistic, and well-written. but it seems to me like they focused so much on the atmosphere and the details that they forgot to ever make you actually CARE about what you're watching.

so, yeah. everyone else in this topic is wrong. or maybe the show really does get better once you know the chars and are more used to the show. maybe one day I'll sit through the first 12 hours so that I can finally get to something that I might appreciate. I just don't see why I'd ever have the motivation

Actually I'll agree with pxl on Dexter. The first season was really good, the second is crap (Lila), the third was alright for most of it and great toward the end (Doakes), the fourth is legitimately one of the best seasons of anything I've seen, but this past season was one of the worst.

I dunno. Dex isn't all it's cracked up to be, I think.

the inner monologue on dexter is so terribly bad. I literally cringed every time it happened because it was so god awful.

no TV show pisses me off more than dexter does. they completely ruined what could have been an amazing show with a terribly written inner monologue

I don't see how watching a lot of series makes you credible

So yeah. 1 and 4 were some of the best stuff I've ever watched, 3 and 5 were good. 2 was pretty mediocre, even ranging to bad sometimes.

You know, without having watched The Wire, I can say one thing: if the first season is supposed to be watched in full before you decide it sucks or not, it's poorly written. Don't try to defend it: 100 Years of Solitude is often considered one of the greatest novels ever, and people will STILL tell you to skip the first 100 pages. Sorry, but if the first season sucks, it sucks. No use in trying to dress it up.

It seems much easier to believe that yes, all that laying the groundwork is terrible because there's so much stuff to cover, than to believe you're not fanboying hard and ignoring its flaws. Sorry to say it!

The first season doesn't actually suck though. First watch, maybe, yeah, but it's a lot better a second time around (and even better a third) and there are a crazy amount of memorable moments, scenes, and characters. I remember more from Season 1 than any other season and I didn't even start with it.

Look, the main problem here is that pxlated believes that "nothing happens" in the first six episodes. Were this the case, it'd be true, but it's not. It's slow, meticulous, and character-driven, sure, but if you can't see the value in scenes like...

watched the first season and didn't like

agree with the sentiment that not enough happens

none of the cops was remotely likable or interesting as a character

omar/avon/stringer/deangelo were charismatic and enjoyable enough to get me through the season, but weren't enough to keep me going

dropped the show after episode 1 of season 2

I did find it odd that even though I enjoyed the first season, there were only two characters I actually liked (Omar and D'Angelo--and I didn't even like D'Angelo until the end of the season).

Unless you are using "nothing happened" as interchangeable with "I wasn't interested with what was happening," I don't know how you could make that argument unless you weren't paying attention or didn't understand what was going on.
