Pretty much anything on there involving a band that isn't a boy band is not a pop song.

There are other strong examples, but those are some of the most blatant.

It really just depends on your perception of the genre. I know I wouldn't consider SCOM or Hotel California pop, but it's reasonable why others would.

Actually, that's exactly what the genre originated as. "Having popular appeal." Just because one can now argue it has a different meaning doesn't mean that they have to abide by it over the original idea.

It's a specific genre that does refer to a general style of song. You can make whatever argument you want over it, and you can feel free to be wrong.

They absolutely are. Genres are merely vaguely-defined concepts. Pop music is the broadest umbrella under which music can be placed. By its own definition, a pop song is a song that has broad appeal to a wide audience. Only over the course of our lifetimes has pop music taken on an additional but secondary meaning as a more specific style of music. The meaning of "pop" and the songs that are "pop" do not create a mutual exclusivity.

The term "pop song," is first recorded as being used in 1926 in the sense of a piece of music "having popular appeal".[4] Hatch and Millward indicate that many events in the history of recording in the 1920s can be seen as the birth of the modern pop music industry, including in country, blues and hillbilly music.[5]

According to Grove Music Online, the term "pop music" "originated in Britain in the mid-1950s as a description for Rock and roll and the new youth music styles that it influenced ...".[6] The Oxford Dictionary of Music states that while pop's "earlier meaning meant concerts appealing to a wide audience ...[,] since the late 1950s, however, pop has had the special meaning of non-classical mus[ic], usually in the form of songs, performed by such artists as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, ABBA, etc."[7] Grove Music Online also states that "... in the early 1960s [the term] ‘pop music’ competed terminologically with Beat music [in England], while in the USA its coverage overlapped (as it still does) with that of ‘rock and roll’."[6] Chambers' Dictionary mentions the contemporary usage of the term "pop art";[8] Grove Music Online states that the "term pop music ... seems to have been a spin-off from the terms pop art and pop culture, coined slightly earlier, and referring to a whole range of new, often American, media-culture products".[6]

No. The TERM "pop" originated from popular music, but the term was created for simple songs that follow current trends and attempt to appeal to the widest possible audience, deemphasize artistic qualities, and focus on production over performance - pretty much none of which applies to any of the songs I named.

The problem is when you take pop songs as something that is not a genre (like this list does) but then you also use it the other way. This is most problematic with crossover genres or off shoots (Power Pop, Technopop, Electropop, any fusion really). You can't have things both ways like this.

And the problem with defining Pop in the way Cokes would have us do is the same as with Classic Rock - It has no form, no guidelines or boundaries, and in the end you aren't really defining anything.

beatles are the best pop band ever.

for what it's worth, this list explicitly states what is deems a pop song: a song that's performed well on an american popular song chart. i'd say that's as good a definition of 'pop song' as you'll find. no need to generalize, shoe-horn, or look down upon a genre of music that just so happens to have a similar name to a definition.

you are simply making a list of popular music. there is no need to further delineate. by providing a broad spectrum of music over the coarse of decades, you're able to see how tastes have changed far better than you would in a specified list.

the definition of pop song is not the biggest issue with this list, however. the lack of "be my baby" is.

Especially funny when on one list the Rolling Stones came in second to "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. Come on, guys. You can try to hide it better.
