Wiimote shaking for timing-sensitive actions always has and always will suck, but otherwise Galaxy's controls are good.
Personally I think SMG2 is just way too like the original to be an excellent game to me, though it's still a good one. Yes, it'd likely be the better game if it came first, but when two games are that similar, I'm never going to have as high a respect for the second. Also Bowser isn't a complete joke in Galaxy 1! LttP may be a bottom five game for me. Really don't like that game at all (not big on Zeldas in general outside finding the 2nd one pretty cool, and LttP moved the series towards a brand of puzzle I can't stand). I mean, it's probably not, but it's certainly bottom 5 out of games I've seen actual hype for! (e.g. SNES Lord of the Rings is obviously way worse, but everyone who's played it knows this). Disappointed in SM64 beating SMB3, kinda confirms what I've been suspecting for a few years now, that B8 has really moved past the NES era and those of us who grew up in it are a minority. Go back to the early days of this board and SMB3 clobbers SMW and SM64; now I kind of expect it to lose to both. On a related "how the NES has fallen", MMX sff'ing MM3 like that. Wow, really? Is the original MMX now the powerhouse Mega Man or something? If so, I can't wait for time to move on so that MMX4 can take up that mantle in a few years maybe. <_< -- The RPG Duelling League: www.rpgdl.com An unparalleled source for RPG information and discussion ... Well, for SMG2 we were all super excited over the fact that it was the first time two 3D Mario games would be native to the same console...but seriously, I don't get that point! Most video game sequels that are similar to their originals are widely considered to be improvements anyway, and SMG2 is an example. The only things that SMG1 does better are production values (lol, who plays a Mario game for this?), backstory (again, lol), and MAYBE original score. And this isn't like Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time where one is way too similar to the other - both Galaxies have differently structured hubworlds (same true with ANY 3D Mario, really), and I can't think of a single level in Galaxy 2 that aped something from Galaxy 1.
They're both in my top 10, being #5 and #6, anyway. Quite frankly either one would be higher if the other one didn't exist, but eh I love them both a lot anyway. Okay, if we're having inter-series matches involving Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Sonic already, what are we leaving for the final week? -- Currently Playing - StarCraft Hopefully Next Up - Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Xenogears ... Nah, MM2 beat MMX during the last Rivalry Week. MM3 just isn't as popular.
Ah, okay. That's what I get for only paying attention to this thread very intermittently, I suppose. (I'm used to MM3 holding its own with MM2 in other communities I frequent.) Most video game sequels that are similar to their originals are widely considered to be improvements anyway I've never really gotten that impression, and I certainly don't second it myself. While there are sequels that are often considered to be superior to a similar original (DKC2 and Sonic 2 for instance, though I don't agree with either so I'm sure a lot of this is just me not being hugely enamoured of such games!), there are plenty of counterexamples (SMB2j, MMX2-3, untold numbers of Street Fighter games, etc.). And it feels like you get at best one such sequel before the general gaming population loses interest. I strongly suspect that a SMG3 designed in a similar fashion to SMG2 (even if just as good a game in isolation) would be a commercial failure. I'm always weirded out how by many people care about hub worlds in 3D Marios, incidentally, and this goes for people on both side of the argument here! -- The RPG Duelling League: www.rpgdl.com An unparalleled source for RPG information and discussion ... There's a big difference between Banjo and Mario.
Mario is about platforming. A quick level selection is all you need. Banjo is an adventure collect-a-thon. A neat world map works here. I really hated the dumb balance between selecting the stars but having virtually no difference in the worlds that 64 and Sunshine did. Why get warped out every time if the world was just gonna be tweaked? I'd rather have completely new levels each time then just "run back up the same thing to get to the different part." ...
