Weeks ago I started to get the sensation like I had slight wax buildup in both my ears. My left ear got completely better, but my right ear got worse. Over the span of 4 days or so, it became clear my right ear was either infected, or that the eardrum was ruptured, or that I had a lot of fluid in there, or something. It hurt like hell, it was a sharp, shooting pain and constant pressure, I had trouble sleeping for two days, any kind of change in air pressure was extremely painful, my ability to hear out of that ear was reduced, and then it started subsiding.

Now that my right ear's been fine for longer than a week, VERY suddenly my left ear is giving me intense splitting pain. I can't blow my nose even a little without yelping from blowing out my ear. It hurts all the way down my sinus and feels like the upper-left part of my jaw is stiff. I kind of hear an amplified white noise all the time.

I had all of these symptoms in my right ear, and it got better all by itself. Yesterday I was barely able to get to sleep because it hurt WAY worse than my right ear ever did, but somehow I managed, and today it's at least better than it was last night.

But since I never went to the doctor about it, I'm a little concerned with my ear hygiene. Is it common to get infections or ruptured eardrums in both ears at more or less the same time? I really don't have a history of ear problems. Is there any kind of "proper ear hygiene" I'm somehow doing terribly wrong?

I have no idea but I had a half deaf ear for 3 days a couple weeks ago and it was the most annoying thing I've ever had. It didn't even hurt like yours, it was just half deaf so I couldn't listen to music properly etc. Good luck with your problem, I hope it goes away by itself quickly!

Thanks - that does sound annoying, you were probably harder of hearing than I am, I can listen to headphones okay (except it was really physically irritating for me last night and I had to end a Skype call prematurely because of the pain and inability to concentrate).

I'm sure this will go away, since it did for the other ear. I'm just trying to figure out what could have caused this and if this is going to start being chronic or something.

I hate having problems with my ears. I had some pressure that was stuck in my ear for a really long time before finally having it taken care of. Felt a lot better afterward.

I've gotten some pretty bad ear infections, but never one ear after the other or so quickly between infections.
