The most prominent is probably Mitt Romney. Then a smorgasbord of Republican candidates after him.....Ron Paul, Michelle Bachmann, and lots of others.

No one. The only one with a semi realistic chance is Mitt Romney (the rest of the Republican candidates are a bunch of loons), and Romney's isn't a very good one

The GOP is an amazingly effective political party, but it's about time they stopped using the full faith and credit of the country as leverage.

deep bro

As of now, Romney's the Republican frontrunner, but he's not going to win if he gets the bid. It's never easy to oust an incumbent, and Romney's religion and reputation for flip-flopping will hold him back even further. However, were someone like Rick Perry to run (and by most reports, that's becoming more and more likely) on a grassroots, back-to-basics conservative platform, then the party would have a chance. Maybe.

It's a weak field in my opinion. Of the dozen+ candidates, a grand total of zero are currently in the Senate or serving as governors. Know the last time someone who wasn't a sitting Senator or Governor won the presidency? Eisenhower over 50 years ago, and he was a WWII hero. The few candidates currently in government are all in the House of Representatives. Know the last time someone went from the House to the Presidency? James Garfield over 130 years ago, and I think he's one of only a few who have ever done so.

Judging by the way things are looking, this will only change if Texas Governor Rick Perry throws his hat in, and he may have the best shot of defeating front runner Romney. However, it's starting to get late now, and a Palin announcement could steal the thunder from everyone. I think Perry could make a more formidable general opponent than Romney, but Obama's sly campaign could use the war chest for some stinging "remember the last Governor from Texas" ads. People still hate Bush.

Either way, yeah, Obama will be very difficult to beat, and I don't think the Republicans will field anyone who has the chops to do it.

The Republicans have a small additional advantage however, since several Republican states have gained Representatives while lots of Democratic states have lost Representatives.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ElectoralCollege2012.svg

It amazes me however that the GOP can dish out dozens of candidates, yet none of them show any decency other than Romney and Paul, who have some good points and most importantly, sense.

As horrible as Obama is, he is easily the best candidate from a major party. It looks as if I will be voting for a lesser party candidate though. Nader I guess if he runs again.

GOP has no candidates with any chance of winning

and yet, Obama would have to do something amazing to win with this economy, so perhaps that can elevate one of these losers to contender status?

either way, you are all out of your mind if you think ron paul is even part of the conversation.

he will do neither. how in the world would he win the primary? the majority of his party does not agree with his message more than the other candidates, and he certainly does not have the party backing/funding/media attention of others.

and how in the world would he win the election? are you ****ing kidding?

his impact as a third party candidate would be negligible. he does not have the funding.

Ron Paul will win the GOP candidacy if a large meteorite comes in and kills Michelle Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Perry. At which point he'll have to fight Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, and possibly Chris Christie in what will commonly be known as "The race to be the worst loser in presidential election history". He's gonna continue getting just under 10% in primaries until he just retires from politics, at which point one of his sons will take his place whenever they turn 55.

It's Romney or Bachmann at this point, unless Perry steps in. Bachmann is looking to win Iowa, Romney to win NH, probably Bachmann again in SC, at which point it really depends if crazy or "sane" wins out. (crazy=Bachmann, "sane"=Romney)

Based on the way their campaigns will presumably be won, Jon Huntsman is the only Republican candidate with a real shot at beating Obama, IMO, as he's the only one with the potential to run a positive campaign.

Positive campaigns are way more effective than negative campaigns, at least on a national level. The last person (Clinton) to unseat the sitting president didn't win because he ran as the anti-Bush. He ran with his own message. I don't see why candidates nowadays attack each other as much as they do when they have enough proxies in the media/blogosphere to do it for them.

Ron Paul is the only other Republican candidate who would run not a mostly anti-Obama campaign, but I doubt he could win a general election.

The Paul > Obama > Romney people make no sense. Unless you're only voting on foreign affairs, or based on personality, this chain of preference makes no sense to me.
