"So young" said Wyman Manderly. "Though mayhaps this was a blessing. Had he lived, he would have grown up to be a Frey."

Oh man, I'm reading through the comments about ADWD on towerofthehand and just found out Wyman Manderly had Freys in the meatpies he served at the wedding feast. Dude is frickin' awesome.

Just finished now. It had some cool parts, sure, but not much more than Feast did. Dany was absolutely horrible compared to the previous books, and most of the plotlines didn't really go anywhere despite all the time spent on them.

I agree with the previous two posts. I really hope Aegon is for real because it's nice to have a Targ doing what he should be doing and not wasting chapters on another continent.

Melissandre's Stone Dragon prediction... Greyscale Aegon maybe?

Also, as somebody pointed out: the knight who was killed in Jon's last chapter had a star sigil. He was bleeding all over the place. We had smoking wounds and Bowen Marsh tears. "Reborn beneath a bleeding star, of salt and smoke" or whatever. Plus Melissandre's predictions and visions - looking for Azor Azai and seeing Jon, seeing Jon as a man then a wolf then a man again... yeah looks like we found Azor Azai. Now here's hoping he stabs Melissandre to get the flaming sword >_>

Daenerys chapters sucked for the most part. Also, is it going to be Tyrion, Jorah or the Red Priest who screws over Daenerys (3 people of note on Perfumed Senechal/Stinky Steward... I guess it could be the she-dwarf. I hope not. **** her character).

This book was backwards for me. Jon/Tyrion/Daenerys chapter late in the book? Ugh. Greyjoy chapter? Woo!

In addition, perhaps the 3 most interesting characters were Davos (not seen in second half), Bran (not seen in second half) and Victarion (2 chapters). Probably because they were the ones who weren't overused.

I love how Varys basically tells Kevan "Yeah, you're the only competent guy around who might have NOT started a new civil war, so you gots to go"

Yeah but that's odd since Ser Patrek was named after a blogger named Pat who won a football bet against GRRM so got to appear in the novel. The silver star on blue represents the Dallas Cowboys, and the giant represents GRRM's team the New York Giants.

Finished reading it last night. If you had told me beforehand that my two favorite PoV characters would be Jon and Theon, I probably would have rolled my eyes. I never really cared for Jon over most of the first four books (although that started to change when Stannis showed up, so I suppose this wasn't entirely unforeseeable) and while I had nothing particularly against Theon, I didn't exactly have much faith that his point of view would be that great. I was very glad to be wrong on those counts.

Now, if you had told me Daenerys would be my least favorite PoV in the book... well, I probably would have gone, "Yeah, sounds about right." Never been a fan of hers, and really, even the Meereen plotline started improving once it was being told through Barristan, but at this rate I almost don't see how they can get everyone there over to Westeros in time for the end of the series. Tyrion's PoV was also a disappointment for the most part. I was really expecting/hoping he'd announce who he was to Daenerys in the arena and that plotline would finally start going somewhere productive.

I also hope Stannis is actually okay and Ramsay is just bluffing/lying in his letter, I always found Stannis to be very interesting. While I still ultimately would love to see Littlefinger "win," ever since Robb has been gone, I've been on Stannis's "side" out of everyone else and even when Robb was around I was okay with Stannis.

Hmm, you mentioning Littlefinger there has me curious. Littlefinger seems to have accomplished most of his goals, so what is he aiming for from now on? He's not on Varys's side or the Lannisters or the North or Stannis's, so that just leaves...The Others?

Littlefinger will rule as the man-behind-the-throne when he unites Vale and North and Riverlands, thus "winning" the game of thrones.

Then Dragons and Others will come and the whole game will turn out to be meaningless.

Funny, because I actually kind of like Melisandre after her POV chapter!

But yes, Daenerys is getting a little frustrating over in Meereen. I wonder how much of that is due to the infamous "Meereenese Knot" in which GRRM had to find a reason for Dany to stay there for a long time.

Honestly, at this point even I'm not sure what Littlefinger's endgame is. Assuming he's telling the truth to Sansa, his immediate plan is to create that North-Riverlands-Vale alliance/merge. However, I'm not sure if he'd be content with those three, or would instead just keep going and work on taking over the remaining Kingdoms. As far as I could tell, his original plan was nothing more than "Get Ned exiled so he could get Catelyn" and once Joffrey completely derailed that he's just readjusted it to "Hand Sansa either half the kingdom or more and win Sansa in the process."

The other thing is, I have to assume that the second Littlefinger goes through with this plan, basically everyone else in Westeros is going to be after him. Stannis obviously isn't going to settle for the Seven Kingdoms being divided (at best), and I doubt Aegon, Daenerys, or Cersei would either. Thing is, once Littlefinger plays that card, I think he basically burns his bridges with everyone in the South. Even to this moment King's Landing sees him as an ally. Both Cersei and Kevan have internally thought to themselves that who they really need back on the council is Littlefinger. Hard to imagine that kind of thinking keeps up once he ends up taking half the kingdom with him.

Of course, he could tell Sansa to only act like she's allied with the Vale, while he pretends the Riverlands are still loyal, and continues to cause the South to implode. Varys seems to be doing a good job at that though. Alternatively, Littlefinger only cared about the Riverlands to the extent that being Lord Paramount allowed him to gain control of the Vale. Afterall, the Riverlands should be the hardest to defend of the 3 I would think, he could just sacrifice the Riverlands and keep the 2 much more defensible locations. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if by the time Daenerys arrives, it's Littlefinger and Sansa (and possibly Aegon before them) who she has to depose to unite the Seven Kingdoms.

Littlefinger wants to be recognized as a great lord. I'm pretty sure that's his primary motivation for everything he does. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Sansa become a skilled player of the Game either!

He accomplishes that a while ago when he becomes Lord Paramount of the Trident though. Strictly speaking, he had no reason to continue amassing Kingdoms, though I guess it does make him "greater."He already officially controls 2/7, and with Sansa he can make that 3. I'm just not sure he decides to stop at 3. 1 was already enough to make him one of the most powerful lords in the Seven Kingdoms (although, admittedly, the Riverlands have been so badly weakened, this could be a 'In Name Only' type of deal) 2 makes it even better, as now he has in the Vale one of the only untouched armies in the Seven Kingdoms (the other being Dorne).

As a side note, I think it's a bit premature to claim that The Game will become meaningless once The Others and/or Dragons show up. Daenerys and the dragons only represent another player, albeit a far more difficult one to deal with. The Others? If anything, I would think for someone like Littlefinger, they'd make it the best time to play. Afterall, with The Others bearing down on Westeros, who would possibly want to play The Game outside of Littlefinger? I'd almost find it far more likely that everyone else starts panicking over The Others and Littlefinger just takes advantage of it by being able to take crazy moves he could never pull off if everyone wasn't terrified.

That said, I don't expect Littlefinger to win. The most likely (and arguably most cliche) ending would be for Sansa to turn on him and beat him at his own game, since she is arguably his only weakness at this point. Second to that, I could see him looking at say, Daenerys's army and realizing that his fun is up, and joining up with her and starting a new round of The Game from within her rule. Whether someone like Varys would actually allow this to happen is another matter all together, but presumably Littlefinger would also be aware of this. If he switches sides over to Daenerys, she might be more than happy to let him keep some, or even all, of the Kingdoms he acquired - they had all been held by helpers of the Usurper after all!

Well Varys has his own potential little pawn in Littlefinger's retinue with Ser Shadrich, the Mad Mouse, who I can see upsetting Littlefinger's plans by abducting Sansa or informing Varys of her whereabouts.

So my friends and I did a fantasy football type thing, except with this book, awarding points for kills, magical feats, and awesome moments. Aside from reading the book and taking notes on the plot, I also marked down whenever one of the characters I "drafted" scored points. Maybe the nerdiest thing I've ever done, but it was pretty cool.

It was a relatively low scoring "game," with some exceptions. One of the two guys I did this with hit me up on Facebook to talk about the book:

Robert:

I have a question
before we begin speculating
are you going to try and get 294 or whatever kills for Drogon from the arena scene?

Probably Ser Bonifer the Good, the leader of the Holy Hundred. Jaime put him in charge of cleaning up Harrenhall in his most recent appearance.

Finished reading this last night.

I didn't really like it; it was better than Feast for Crows, but not that much better.

The Dany chapters were so bad and she consistently avoided all the interesting characters, thus probably cementing her as my least favorite PoV character. There were even two separate PoV character groups introduced to get Dany to get a move on and leave these incredibly dull politics behind, and she ignored both of them!

Tyrion's a fun character, and my favorite, but he didn't really do anything at all this book despite having lots of screen time.

Theon and Jon's chapters were good. I admit that I'm hoping Jon doesn't die like he seemed to. And I liked the Aegon stuff.

In the end, though, just like Feast for Crows, this was a pretty uneventful book, especially if Jon doesn't actually die.
