The popularity gap (at least on this board/site) between it and any other series rep is so immense that I'm wondering how many people's RE experience begin and end with 4.
As an aside, can you think of any other series where the popularity gap between the top game and everything else is so wide?

Eh, RBY could only 55/45 GSC. RE4 would kill any other RE far worse than that.
I'm thinking that Zelda and Final Fantasy, of all things, might come close. I guess it (partially) depends on what OoT and VII would do against LttP and X.

Anyway, I think that might apply to Rock Band. A lot of people bought into it, but by the time RB2 came out, the rhythm game fad was really flatlining.

Maybe you mean MM and VIII.
Unless you mean that despite being the second strongest, or even BECAUSE they are the second strongest, they have far too much overlap with OoT and VII to do well against them, leaving the third place entries to do the best against them.
Duke Nukem is a good contender. There's DN3D which is still loved by many PC/FPS fans to this day, and then there's all the other games, including Forever.

This might be true if RB2 didn't improve upon everything in the game. And if RB3 didn't then improve everything about RB2.
Oh! How about ToeJam and Earl? The first one is one of gaming's ultimate cult classics, but the other two games are barely talked about. Also, the original Tetris would kill any other Tetris game in a contest.

Yeah, but I don't think those two sold nearly as well, did they?

I think RE5 is the only main RE game I haven't played/beat. RE4 is one of those games that I consider perfect, and after watching my brother play RE5 for a bit, I realized that I would not enjoy that lame excuse of a sequel so I decided not to touch it.

There are a ton of people who'd argue that RE4 isn't head and shoulders above the others. I'm thinking there are also people who'd do the same for DMC, although I don't know much about that fanbase (and any of the games outside of the original).

Aren't we sort of ignoring that for the purposes of this topic? There are plenty of people that will argue for any game of any fanbase, and I'm pretty sure less people would argue DMC1>3 than RE1/2>4.
Played every single RE, except for CV, which I'll probably be playing later in the year. As far as the RE's go, it's pretty split between the fans, some think 1/2 > 4 other think 4 > 1/2. I think 4 is better, but REmake in particular is great in its own right.
I'm not going to bash RE4 for 'getting away from its roots" which most people complain about anyway, I don't really mind the action formula they took, but 5 took that and made it considerably worse. If 6 takes the gameplay mechanics from 4, and suits them for today's standards, while lowering the ammo count, lower the overall enemy amount, but still keeping some heart pounding areas( El gigante type situations, or a mass amount of enemies charging at you), and make it more about survival rather than shoot a bunch of zombies/ganados.
Something like the beginning of the village in RE4, where you didn't have much ammo, and you were forced to run then shoot, rather then shoot run, look for ammo, keep shooting.
