Definitely not! Otherwise you end up like most South American countries, where the elected official only has approval from 20% of the nation.

Yeah, I'd rather 20% approval then having people who don't listen to any debates, don't look up any of the candidates stances, and vote solely based off whether they are represented by Blue or Red.

This isn't a problem with a two-party system, nor with America; it's a problem with democracy in general. If you give the population as a whole a share of major political power, then you have to live with the consequences of bad judgment.

Come on, Andel. I saw your stuff in the other topic; you're a smart guy. You should realize that while plenty of "sheep" vote based on party lines without a moment of reflection, those who throw away their vote on a third-party candidate are just as sheepish. Politics is all about compromise, and to essentially nullify your vote by hedging on an impossibility is idealistic to a fault. Politics is pragmatic first.

Then again, voting makes no difference. If you, as an individual, would like to make an impact, your efforts are best spent outside the polling booth.

Not too late. Just ask Eugene McCarthy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_%28United_States%29_presidential_primaries,_1968
The New Hampshire/Wisconsin Democratic primaries were probably the biggest electoral achievements in recent American history, tbqh.

Be careful what you wish for though. Never know when you might have a slimeball like RFK who sits back and lets someone else do all the hard work, before trying to swoop in and take the benefits for themselves.

Third parties are never going to do well if they try to jump ahead and enter the presidential race. Start local and move up. Look at Vermont. They have a relevant third party in their state's politics, and it has elected representatives to national office (OK, just the one, but it's not like Vermont has a ton of Congressional seats at play here.)

What's a good alternative to "throwing my vote away" on a third party?

I used to have that same philosophy on voting, bosh. I recently came to the realization that both major parties are selling out the interests of our country at an alarming rate. the 'issues' that seperate the two parties are just media talking points, and neither party makes a real effort to change the policies of their predecessors. the only real winner in our sordid two party system are the social elites and the multinational corporations. there hasnt been a president in my lifetime that has given a damn about the constitution, though they all swear to uphold it. I am just permantely disillusioned with the current political structure and will be casting my vote, for the first time, with a third party.

I don't think that voting for a third party over Obama for president is the right strategy for political change. Things have to start from the ground up. Electing someone like Ralph Nader to the presidency would be a waste, since he would not have that many people to work with in Congress. He would obviously propose much better ideas, but it's not like they would go anywhere.

This whole thing would be fixed if we had an automatic runoff system. You pick who your first, second and third choices are. Until someone has the majority, the lowest voted candidate is eliminated. Whoever was voting for that person has their vote automatically transferred for their next choice.

That way people will be able to vote a little bit More about the issues rather than OH GOD I HOPE THAT GUY DOESN'T WIN GOTTA VOTE FOR THE OTHER FATTY

Good luck getting this passed though. Neither party wants it

Why would they?

That sounds like a great way to pick a kind of cake for a party. Political positions? Not so much.

The Democrats can barely keep up with the Republicans as it is, anything good they try to do is immediately labeled as communism or anti-american and discarded. The US needs less hyper nationalistic rednecks.

My favorite part is how Obama is still a socialist after all of this. Someone that I barely knew tried to tell me this at a graduation party and I argued circles around her and called her an idiot straight to her face. I hate doing that but if you're going to be that stupid, you deserve it.
