After reading some of the topics here, especially the ones about picking up nerdy girls, I started to wonder what the census of B8 is.

Although I don't have a problem with people who are nerds or anything to that effect, I would never ever wear a piece of clothing that depicted a video game or anime character or anything to that effect. The closest thing I have to a nerd piece of clothing is the Sheldon Cooper Friendship Algorithim shirt I bought, which I don't even know if that counts. I wear soccer Jerseys more often then stuff like that. I also don't go after girls who would wear stuff like that either. I think thats kind of eh....

Not preaching or anything, I was just wondering if most of you guys are like this, or if its just a few people that I notice.

We are on a video game site, on a message board (ostensibly) dedicated to popularity contests about video game characters. Several months after the last one was held, and before the next one is announced.

To be honest, gaming and anime clothing have a stigma attached to them.

I could go outside in my Spider-Man t-shirt from Disney and nobody would assume I was obsessed with comic books or anything, it's just Spider-Man.

You couldn't really get away with wearing what's clearly a video game based shirt unless it was something extremely mainstream like Mario. An anime shirt, you can just forget about it.

Yeah, I suppose.

I think being a nerd isn't so bad though. I think if you took someone our age from, say, 15 years ago forward to now, he'd classify most people as "nerds". Videogames are more popular and widely accepted than ever, they've become a real part of the fabric of society whereas they weren't before. People spend time on the internet social networking which was once something of a "nerdy" passtime.

tl;dr: some nerds (not all) are progressive.

That said I think a lot of interests are a bit more widely accepted now. There are people who casually play things like WoW, for instance, that are also functioning members of society, not what you would call the classic "nerd". People are a bit more flexible, I think - or I like to think, anyway.

No

I mean, I'm definitely into video games more than the average person. I'm perfectly willing to admit I'm a geek but not a nerd

THERES A DIFFERENCE

I don't have any video game related clothes, though I do have some comic related shirts but its from the Punisher, and thats my nickname so >_>

I do have a game room, filled with game memorabilia and posters and ****, but I always chalk that up to be working at Gamestop >_>

Then again, I've always seen a nerd as a socially awkward, weak loser, while smart, just doesn't fit in anywhere and sometimes can be a geek for some things as a result. and I'm anything but that

Err...ok, sorry, That may be a bit harsh but you get the idea

A fair point, I suppose. Most of my friends are nerds, but obviously I have a fair number who aren't too. They don't particularly care what I wear either, but then again I doubt I'd be friends with someone who cared that much about appearance. >_>
Having a huge gang of nerdy friends is amazing though! Well, on second thought it's probably not that, so much as it is having a large group of pals who are finely tuned to your interests/tastes. Definitely one of the finer things in life, I'd say.

Just out of interest, would you still think that? Personally I think that shirt looks more "badass" than it does "wolverine".

I think part of why so much of my wardrobe is gaming related is I can't really conceive of what a "normal" shirt is. Button-ups seem more "nerdy" to me than most of the shirts I wear, and polos are so boring. Seems like most shirts just consist of some arbitrary pattern/color, I can't bring myself to wear something so lacking in personality!

I completely understand where you're coming from. I think the main reason I don't have any gaming related shirts is because I don't feel strongly enough about any games to actually purchase something related to them. Name-brands and plain patterned or colored shirts are just something I default to. Plus, I'm more inclined to blend in to a crowd rather than try to stand out with a shirts closer to my personality.

If you define geek/nerd by their hobbies and such, then count me in 100%

1) I love video games, D&D, Magic, comics, sci-fi and fantasy
2) I'm a total baseball stats nut
3) I have many geeky t-shirts I wear with pride,. Off the top of my head, I own a Zelda one, a Transformers, a Marvel and a LOST shirt (well, perhaps I'm a little ashamed of that last one after the finale). :P
4) I have played Pokemon and Zelda on my DS on my commute home.

But being a geek does not make one socially awkward by any means nor is it anything to be ashamed of. Personally I can't wait until I can take my daughter to a baseball game and teach her how to keep score, watching her play Ocarina for the first time, reading The Hobbit to her, etc. And, yes, my wife supports me in all this (well, sort of) <_<

Yeah, Japan invented a word for that, Otaku. (The way Otaku is used on the internet in America does not hold the same meaning at all, it's not supposed to be something to be proud of, it's an insult)

I would say visiting B8 and a couple other message boards is about the nerdiest thing I do. Well, that and watch anime, but that's moreso because I finished all the complete seasons of Dexter and Breaking Bad and thought it'd be fun to watch Yu Yu Hakusho. Oh, and I'm an Engineer, which I guess some people think is nerdy.

Also, how does being good at math = nerd? Plenty of nerds suck at math.
