I guess I can understand the difficulty spike in Chapter 11 frustrating a lot of people, but it's still a good part of the game. Very long, but still good, especially the end.
Although Chapter 11 is where the story starts hitting the "uhhhhhh Square apparently has no idea what direction they want to take the game from here" part.

Since I was eagerly awaiting Chapter 11 and onward for answers to the convoluted mess the main plot had developed into, I was very angry to see that things only grew much more convoluted, becoming an VIII-2 of sorts in that without the Ultimania at your side I wish you damn fine luck, good sir, figuring out what the hell is going on behind the scenes.

That's pretty much what's been going on the whole game. The characters really have nothing going on, they're just going from place to place, interacting and doing stuff, none of it feels like it matters.
As for VII and X, I liked them, which is why I finished them. VII is one of my favorite games actually, and I only just played and beat it a couple years ago. I just think it's really good, fun upgrade system, fun battle system, awesome Limit Breaks, good characters mostly -- Cloud, Red, Barret, Cid at least, Yuffie too, maybe Tifa, I don't remember who Cait Sith is, he doesn't exist, oh and Aeris... well she wasn't bad, but when she *spoilers* that was really emotional and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Oh and Sephiroth is honestly a really cool villain, I enjoy him a lot for some reason.
X on the other hand, I enjoyed quite a bit, but not as much as VII. Tidus is lame, and I'm not a fan of playing as lame characters. I hate Wakka. Rikku and Lulu aren't anything special, but I don't hate them. Yuna is alright, though she's annoying, but she has Aeons, and because of that, she ended up being my strongest character, and I wrecked the endgame because of it. Auron is awesome, but he's really the only character that I really like in the game. The story is meh. Jecht is interesting, I guess, but I don't like him a whole lot. Battle system is fun though, mainly Aeons of course.

Fantastic plot. Easily one of the series' most original and thought-provoking ideas.
Yuna is amazing. I know people dislike her left and right but she's seriously one of my favorite video game characters ever. Yes, Heidi Burgess screws up with some of those lines because of the lip-syncing problems and all, but the character herself is terrific. *rambles*
Anyway, Auron is great, Wakka is great (I say this because I really dig his arc: the blind follower turned tough-pill-to-swallow Joe turned "there is good in this faith but you have corrupted it beyond recognition" guy), Lulu is okay, Rikku is great, Kimahri is great and lastly, Tidus is decent but pre-Luca he's pretty bad.
That's the thing with Tidus. I find that the vast majority of his worst scenes subside around then. (Laughing scene in being an exception.)
Music is great although I actually don't like "Otherworld" much. Not my style. But I respect how it clicks with its appropriate scenes. Battle system is rock solid, presentation is top-notch for its time.
FFX-2 never happened.

It's remarkably convoluted! Haven't you read the Ultimania?

I wasn't aware that there was some sort of English translation available anywhere!
The only stuff that could be convoluted is the Time Compression stuff, obviously, but from what I've heard, even the Ultimania doesn't go into a great deal of detail about it.
FFVIII's plot has always seemed pretty easy to grasp, at least to me. You can argue whether or not it makes sense, but I've never thought it was overly complex.

"I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now."
I'm arguing that it doesn't make sense at face value and that the Ultimania is necessary to make it make sense. That kind of encyclopedia-requiring stuff really shouldn't ever happen in gaming or anywhere else.
I find the same thing happens with FFXIII, albeit on a despicably increased note. I blame Toriyama being tasked with writing for that issue.

Maybe the Ultimania describes and explains things that aren't even really touched on in the game, but I would view that as supplementary stuff and not "necessary for the plot to make sense" stuff.

From: kurtfisto | #068 There's this fight somewhere in Pulse between a Behemoth King and one of those giant lion-like things. I pretty much just grinded on that fight >_>
Yeah man, that thing is amazing. Guaranteed preemptive strike.

I fought those guys twice, the first time I did pretty good until the King decided to switch his attention to my team when his HP was low, and he annihilated us. The second time went better, as we actually won. No way I can defeat him before he stands up though.

Oh come on it's fun sometimes! I thought you liked Metal Gear?
And Time Travel is always gonna get a little hectic, but FFVIII is quite tame. VII is probably worse with the more intricate backstories and etc.
You gotta find a way to get the Behemoth King to Stagger before he stands up. That way you can Launch him, and he can't regenerate his HP. Maybe you're not quite strong enough for that yet.
Although he's still beatable even if he does stand up. It's just annoying.

"Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always."
Yeah I know, I did beat him, but that's because his attention was mostly focused on the lion king thing.
I stagger him right away, preemptive strike, it doesn't seem to help much. I'm not sure if I had Snow as a Commando at the time though, as he's the only one in my team capable of launching.

Hard to say right now. I do appreciate the effort, but this sometimes happens. I'll take a break from a game for a while and come back to it at a later date. I feel like I will eventually get back to FFXIII, but I don't know when. You can keep this topic alive if you want, but if you let it purge, it's not a big deal. I'll just start a new topic when I get back to the game.
