Finished the first season.

Pinkie Pie > Rarity > Twilight > Fluttershy > Applejack > Rainbow Dash

No real changes to the ranking except Rarity overtaking Twilight. Pinkie Pie fell off her utter domination of quality in the first season but is still best, Rainbow Dash became more tolerable. Mainly because of comparison to the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

CMCs were terrible, although more of a boring sort of terrible than just bad. It was pretty close to my preconceived notions of what a MLP cartoon would be like, and if they had been early in the show I might have dropped it all together. I almost skipped Cutie Mark Chronicles until I realized that it wasn't yet another episode focused on CMCs. On a positive note, I did like how they dropped the hint that the white one's special talent is probably singing in Stare Master, I had missed that completely until I saw someone else point it out.

Gala episode was very good. Played out well, and even supported the chessmaster Celestia theory. Great way to end things, although the timeline feels a bit wonky with them getting tickets in episode three, a full year of seasons passing, then the event. But I guess since they seem to control all of the weather, including seasons are day/night cycle, the entire show could have happened in three weeks or so.

Aside from anything involving CMC, I thoroughly enjoyed the show to the point where I will probably end up doing a rewatch of most of the season in a few months. It was well made, plenty of funny moments, and managed to remember that being targeted at young children isn't an excuse to phone it in. Not on the level of cartoons I watched as a kid, but I'm honestly wondering how much of that opinion is just nostalgia.

I started watching this show recently too, and the episode I just watched (Suited for Success) actually bugged the crap out of me. It bugged me that all the Ponies could suddenly start acting like selfish jerks out of the blue after Rarity worked so hard to make them those dresses. (And yes Rarity is my favorite so I MAD.) It just made me wonder if there actually is character development on this show like I've been told, or if the lessons they learn are just forgotten week to week. I mean I think by now they'd have learned the "don't be a dick to your friends" lesson, but maybe if they did the show would just have to end.

Overall though I'm enjoying the show quite a bit. At first I probably wouldn't have kept watching if not for the fad, but I think Bridle Gossip marked the point where things changed for me and I started to enjoy the show on its own merits. I just wish the characters were more consistent other than their defining traits we learned in the Pilot. Also best episode so far is either Bridle Gossip, Swarm of the Century, or Winter Wrap Up. Man, that was a good three-episode stretch.

You're definitely right about the character development, it's mostly on an individual episode basis, because the episodes don't really have a solid continuity between them.

Still, I think that makes it all the more impressive, considering you're getting this awesome development in only 22 minutes or so. There still ARE references to previous shows and such in later episodes, but persistent series-wide characterizations are not the focus of the show at all.

And even in an episode like Suited For Success, where you have a drastic change in personality, I think it still made sense... In the beginning you had Twilight/Applejack coming into Rarity's store, and they obviously didn't give a **** about fashion, they just want to wear what they want. I dunno, that's one of my most favorite episodes because I could relate so hard with Rarity. Haven't you ever offered to make something for a friend? They're not dicks, it's just that their vision is different than yours.

For me it's Pinkie Pie > Spike > Rainbow Dash > Twilight > Rarity > Fluttershy > Applejack.

Not that it really matters, because even Applejack is better than the vast majority of animated characters on shows I've watched.

I agree with this. Also, the Cupcakes song is a favorite for me; even though it's so simple and short, there's just nothing about it to possibly dislike.

But for the moment, the only thing that matters is that this has reduced me to some kind of squee-ing girly mush that's willing to drop more on a plushie than I have on video games in the last year. (Granted, I only have a Wii and DS, so that's just Ghost Trick and Radiant Historia...)
