Approximately 65 big runs since last night, and it's finally over. All party members are at level **. Time to finish Robo's quest and fight the final Spekkio form. I'll do all that stuff tonight and assess my party's leetness.

was out last night. but no, it doesn't stack. ayla's a weird one in that Bronze Fist has the lowest crit rate of all her weapons. i'm also pretty sure Fist gradually evolved by itself along the way, though Iron Fist has the highest crit rate at a bit over a third. Bronze is like... 10%. maybe a bit higher but only a smidge.
still crits enough for me though! just is a notable drop there.

Yeah, I attacked with Ayla about half a dozen times and didn't get a crit, which is noticeably lower than my normal rate. That... kinda sucks. It made this whole thing seem less worth it. I thought she'd be pouncing on people for 9999 a third of the time.

I just don't "get" the appeal in stat maxing in RPGs. I guess I'd rather be advancing the game than grinding. Just fighting random battles and stuff isn't fun, and it's not worth the time sink.
I'm just a completionist by nature, especially when I like the game and the obstacles toward completion aren't nerve-shatteringly difficult. I got everyone up to 255 in FFX as well. I've also maxed Sora and crew during all of my KH/KHII runs (four total). The one time I didn't do it was for FFVII despite my growing into a big fan of that game as well. I think it was because I disliked the entire endgame apart from the last fight.

Man, FFX is my favorite game ever, and I could never do that. Random battles are one of my least favorite aspects of JRPGs, so I try to avoid doing it more than is necessary.
Just a fair warning: If you're going to stat max in FFVIII, it's a little different from your traditional JRPG!
Although stat maxing is much easier in FFVIII than most JRPGs. I think that's the only JRPG I've played where all my characters maxed out, but that's because it doesn't really take a lot of time, relatively speaking.

That's not the way to go in FFX. I'm sure you know about this, but just in case: there's an ingenious glitch using the Tonberry monster arena fight that will max the team out in no time. Farming for enough power/speed/defense/ability/yada yada orbs took me much longer than actually getting the necessary XP.

You're talking about the spheres that you place on empty nodes right?
Alright, cause I was gonna say fighting Kottos for HP/mana/etc. spheres is a piece of cake!
But you can't truly max out unless you customize the grid a bit. I defeated Nemesis for the first time last time, only took close to 200 attack/agility to do it.
I did all kinds of crazy things in FFX because the game encouraged you to do it. there were easy leveling methods, superbosses and numbers that could break 9999.
Chrono Trigger is like... you're already doing near-max damage and the level grind is forever for no gain.
But I guess that's one of the things I like about FFVIII! I can become uber-powerful without having to invest a lot of time grinding. Heck, you don't even really need to fight random battles at all if you play Cards enough and have the Refine abilities from your GFs.

Sorry that I've been delaying dotting the final Is with Chrono Trigger. E3 and other business. I definitely want to see every ending, do one more run through the Black Omen, and give my final thoughts regarding the game.

From: transients | #1807 you don't have to spend much time in FFX either. you'll spend more time moving through the sphere grid than fighting once you get what you need.
It's hard for me to resist the urge to go nuts on leveling as soon as I get to cavern of the stolen fayth(the earliest place you can exploit the trick). Yeah you can't get outrageously overpowered, but you can get almost all over the sphere grid using Lv 2 locks and friends spheres.
It's amusing to get so strong that early in the game, and not overly time consuming.

My Japanese alter-ego. Hey all this is Bartz btw.
Ya'll are making me want to replay it. I loved FFX's leveling system so much. The turn-based combat also served as an accommodating (but oftentimes challenging) introduction into jRPGs. I'm glad I started with that one instead of an ATB-based game.

You can still nominate him if you want, but if you're someone who's absolutely head over heels in love with CT and its world, then Chrono Cross may not sit well with you.
That's all I'll say.

Although as someone who actually played Chrono Cross before playing Chrono Trigger, it didn't bother me at all. I like Serge better than Crono, in fact! There are other areas of the game I'd take issue with.
Just finished Chrono Cross earlier this week for the first time. I knew it wasn't going to be Chrono Trigger 2, but that was okay, I didn't really want a hack sequel of Chrono Trigger anyways.

There's no need to explain that. Apart from the incredible soundtrack, CC is mediocre game with bad gameplay and an overly convoluted storyline that gives MGS2 a run for its money. Being disappointed is the normal reaction.
Ultimaphazon summarized the general issues with Chrono Cross, but I'll go more into detail.
Soundtrack generally didn't do it for me, though; it wasn't bad, but it just wasn't my thing. Did like the graphics on many of the out-of-battle environments, so there was still a saving grace for me.
There are themes and events throughout, but many of them feel disconnected and unimportant on the whole, and it's pretty late in the game that you find out what the hell the actual plot of the game is. You don't even find out some very important information until an extended info-dump by some NPCs immediately before the final boss. In the end a lot of things just don't make much sense. And that ending. Uh. Wow. And not in a good way.
Having so many characters doesn't do much for the gameplay since you only have a three-person party, the main is locked to it forever, they're not especially distinct from each other, and you can only change your party at a save point/the world map. But because there are so many characters, and you're almost always free to choose what non-main character you are using, virtually none of them can be important plotwise and most of the cast has to have a weird accent in order to distinguish their personality.
Battle system is slow and not being able to tell when enemies were going to attack was annoying. It was also pretty annoying when the enemy got a OHKO and my options for reviving characters was so limited. And maybe I was just bad, but Diminish was really the only reason some of those boss battles stayed reasonable.
Non-boss enemies were pretty pointless in most respects; they won't beat you, they don't even really weaken you for the next battle, you can't grind off of them much, and you only need enough money, materials, and elements to outfit three people. Admittedly many RPGs have this problem to some degree, it's just especially noticeable here.
The game has a lot of interesting features to streamline the gameplay (Running away being so easy, auto-allocating elements, the healing after battle, "level-ups" after every boss, etc.), which is nice, but...well, if I'm not doing much actual gameplay other than boss fights, and the plot is pretty questionable, where was the game supposed to be good?

Aside from plot-specific events which involve them, no playable character has unique dialogue except at the very end of the game. They say literally the exact same lines, except with their own accents. Sure in Chrono Trigger, a lot of times your other party members were interchangable in terms of dialogue contributions, but at least their lines were unique and weren't direct copy/pastes but with a CHA added onto the end of words instead of a lisp.

Damn, been impossible to find the time. I did enter the Black Omen again and start to go through it. Once I'm done with that, I'll just watch the other endings and give my final thoughts/rankings.

Also ate the lunch, which I gather from the first page is like bad or something. Named the characters Blake, Petra, and Julia because the original names were weird and dumb.

I've seen your posts before; you dislike jRPGs (I used to as well). Try approaching this objectively. Having a salty attitude and wanting to hate it before you start just means you'll have thrown away eight bucks.

I'm not having a salty attitude, I'm legitimately unimpressed that it took an hour to get through the fair because I wasn't given any hints about what to do.

it's ART.
(though i disagree with some of your CC stuff i can understand it. like the soundtrack, enjoyed the gameplay, hate the number of characters and way it was done, meh to plot.)
