WCW Nitro
Airdate:
May 26th, 1997
Arena/Location: Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start Nitro off with Eric Bischoff walking out. He doesn't look too pleased.. until he turns around and bows at Hogan. Hogan does the shirt rip as he goes to the ring. Looking closer at Hogan, I just realized he's got no handlebar mustache, and his 'beard' covers his face. He then calls out Sting.

After Hogan's callout, we go to the announce booth where the trio hypes up the main event, and talk about Sting.

Match One: Super Calo, Juventud Guerrera, and Hector Garza vs. La Parka, Ciclope, and Damien in a Lucha Libre rules match.

For those that don't know, matches like this mean that you don't 'tag' in your opponent. Instead, you go to the floor, and one of your partners come in. That's the basic difference.

Really fast paced match. At one point, Super Calo goes for a suicide dive on Ciclope, and actually ends up in like the third row. I'm shocked no one was hurt. After several moments great action, the match ends with Hector Garza countering a hurricarana from Ciclope into a powerbomb, and then doing a backflip

Winners by pinfall: Hector Garza, Super Calo, and Juventud Guerrera

Great TV match that got about eight minutes of time to develop. The crowd loved it, as well. ***1/4

Match Two: Alex Wright vs. Psicosis

Alex Wright has the advantage throughout the match, and does his silly dance throughout. This does bite him on the ass when Psicosis hits a corkscrew moonsault on Wright who was dancing on the floor. After throwing him back in Psicosis hits a guillotine legdrop for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Psicosis

*1/4

Mean Gene is interviewing Sonny Onoo. He says Chono's 'nightmare' is in the back. He then asks Psicosis if he wants to make a deal. Psicosis agrees. Madusa then interupts. Madusa says she's gonna put up her career on the line if she can't beat Akira Hokuto for the WCW Women's Title.

After a commercial break, Mike Tenay puts over Ernest Miller, while they show footage of Miller being a Karate Champion of some sort.

Match Three: Wrath w/James Vandenburg and Mortis vs. Mark Starr

Can you say squash? Wrath destroys Starr in just seconds, winning with the Death Penalty.

Winner by pinfall: Wrath

SQUASH

Match Four: Villano IV vs. Konnan

Hugh Morrus cuts a promo against Konnan in a backstage interview. Morrus even tries to interfere, but security stops him. Wait, Security actually does something?

Konnan wins easily with his Tequila Sunrise submission hold.

Winner by submission: Konnan

SQUASH

Konnan is interviewed by Mean Gene in the ring. He cuts a promo against Kevin Sullivan and the Dungeon of Doom. Gene Okerlund informs us that Sullivan is on 'hiatus'. He then threatens Hugh Morrus.

Sonny Onoo introduces the 'nightmare of Chono:' The Great Muta!

Match Five: Great Muta w/Sonny Onoo vs. Masahiro Chono

Chono is out, and has an nWo shirt in his hands.

After few minutes of stalling, Great Muta finally puts a headlock on Chono. Sonny Onoo, angry, gets in the ring, and is greeted with a faceful of Red Mist.

No Contest

Great Muta grabs the nWo shirt, and he's now a member. N/R

Hour Two Commentators: Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan

The duo talk about the start of hour one where Hogan and Bischoff call out Sting, to no avail.

THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER

We get a Savage promo hyping up his match against DDP at the Great American Bash. Great promo here.

THE PRECEDING ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY THE NEW WORLD ORDER

Mean Gene is out to interview Kimerbly and Diamond Dallas Page. They have the crutches that were destroyed when Page attacked Savage. Page then cuts a promo on Savage. Kimberly says the crutches are 'mementos'. Good promo.

Match Six: Barbarian w/Jimmy Hart vs. Jim Powers w/Teddy Long

You konw, I'm a betting man that this exact same match happened in WWF... eight years earlier.

Barbarian wins this match after a few minutes with a Mafia Kick.

Winner by pinfall: Barbarian

3/4*

Mean Gene is interviewing Jimmy Hart and Barbarian. Benoit and Woman are out. Jimmy Hart books a match next week between Benoit and Barbarian.

Match Seven: Giant w/Lex Luger vs. Jerry Flynn/Johnny Swinger/Rick Fuller in a one on three handicap match

Tony informs us this is the first time ever. I.. doubt that.

This is pretty much a complete squash where Giant destroys all three men in less than two minutes. Giant wins by pinning well.. All of them.

Winner by pinfall: Giant

SQUASH

Giant and Luger hype up the Bash at the Beach match between them and Hogan and Rodman.

Lee Marshall is in Dayton, Ohio schilling Nitro from the Hara Arena. Weasel puns, I hate.

The Wolfpack of the nWo comes out. Hall and Nash say they'll put their Tag Team titles on the line against Piper and Flair at Great American Bash.

Main Event: Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherrivs. Four Horsemen (Mongo and Jarrett) w/Debra

Kevin Greene is commentating.

Back and forth match here. About nine minutes in, Mongo leaves the ring to attack Kevin Greene. Jarrett, who is still in the ring is double teamed by Harlem Heat. Booker T pins Jarrett after an axe kick.

Winners by pinfall: Harlem Heat

**

After another break, the nWo music starts up. Hogan and Bischoff again go to the ring. Hogan says that the belt is on the line if Sting comes out right now. As this is all going on, 'Sting' comes up through the ring! Hey! That's not Sting! That's not even nWo Sting! It's.. Bogus nWo Sting! Hogan and Bischoff make Bogus nWo Sting worship the ground Hogan spits on. While this is going on, the Real Sting comes from the rafters, hits a Scorpion Death Drop on both Bischoff and Bogus nWo Sting. The rest of the nWo are out, and before anything happens, Sting rapples back up to the rafters as the show ends.

A few decent matches, and some build up to Great American Bash. the ending segment was pretty cool. 6/10

TV Rating:
3.3

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Hollywood Hogan Homoeroticism Meter: As any wrestling fan knows, Hulk Hogan has always been swirled with rumors of his sexuality. This is one of those times. Today, during his interview, he randomly kissed Bischoff on the side of his head. There was no rhyme or reason to it. Just.. did it.

2. Hilarious in Hindsight Moment of the Night: During Hogan's tirade against Sting, he actually gave three reasons why Sting was afraid of him.. followed by "Number One, Number Two, and Number Three!" Honestly, why didn't Maffew use THAT for Botchamania?

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
May 26th, 1997
Arena/Location: Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio
Hour One Commentators: Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

Nitro starts off with Syxx and Hall in the ring. Hall has both Tag Team Titles. Syxx now has the six cueball on the back of his nWo shirt. I wonder how many shirts like that were sold. Hall and Syxx talk about beating up Greene, Piper, and Flair at Slamboree. Eventually, Hall calls out Ric Flair, thinking Flair is in North Carolina. J.J. Dillon is out, and informs us that Flair will go one on one.. against Scott Hall! That should be good. Hall tries to talk his way out of it, but Dillon tells him if he DOESN'T wrestle Flair tonight, then Dillon will strip Hall and Nash of the Tag Team titles. Hall finally agrees.

After the promo vid, Tony and crew welcome us to Nitro. We immediately go to our first match.

Match One: Alex 'Goofy Dance' Wright vs. Glacier

We are told that Chono/Muta will go against the Steiner Brothers later on tonight. That should be good.

For most of the match, Alex Wright was dancing and carrying on, while he had the advantage. This leads to him losing as Glacier hits the Cryonic Kick on Wright to win.

Winner by pinfall: Glacier

James Vandenburg is out with the helmet. Mortis and Wrath show up from behind Glacier. Glacier tries to hold them off, but fails. Wright stops the two men and demands a piece of Glacier. They step aside, and Wright wails on Glacier. Wright holds Glacier as Mortis goes for a kick, but Glacier jumps out of the way. Glacier eventually fight both Mortis and Wrath off

SQUASH

Match Two: Joe Gomez vs. Buff Bagwell w/Scott Norton

Bagwell and Norton put over the nWo in a pre-match interview.

Thankfully short match that sees Bagwell win with the Blockbuster.

Winner by pinfall: Buff Bagwell

SQUASH

Mike Tenay is at ringside as he talks more about Ernest 'The Cat' Miller. He hypes up Miller, before we get a hype vid for Piper's newest movie: Swept Away. I'm not saying this is some no name B-Movie, but not even Wikipedia has a page on it.

Match Three: Hugh Morrus vs. Prince Iaukea

Konnan attacks Morrus as he is walking out. To show you how dated this is, Morrus appears to have a concussion, but he's gonna wrestle anyway.

Because of the attack, Iaukea pins Morrus in seconds with a school boy.

Winner by pinfall: Prince Iaukea

N/R

Mean Gene is interviewing Dillon. They hype up the Hall/Flair match. They then talk about #1 Contendership match for the Tag Team belts, stating Steiners are those. Immediatey, Harlem Heat/Sister Sherri out and demand a tag team title match. Dillon says if Steiners win tonight, they WILL be #1 Contenders. Hmm.

We get a video package for Diamond Dallas Page. He talks about how he lost his first 79 matches, as well as talking about the Diamond Cutter. Not a bad way to hype up Savage/Page II.

Match Four: nWo (Muta/Chono) vs. The Steiner Brothers

Back and forth match that ends with interference when Harlem Heat show up and hit Rick Steiner with a chair, giving the nWo the win.

Winners by pinfall: Great Muta and Masahiro Chono

**1/4

After the match, JJ Dillon and Harlem Heat are interviewed by Okerlund. Harlem Heat think they are #1 Contenders. He tells Harlem Heat that their match will be watched closely.

Hour Two Commentators: Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan

Mean Gene out to interview Ric Flair. Flair is out in a suit. It apperas Flair also got a haircut, as well. Flair tells us that Kevin Nash isn't there. He hypes up the match tonight.

Match Five: Michael Wallstreet vs. Dean Malenko(c) for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

Wallstreet and Patrick jaw for a decent portion of the match.

In a weird ending, Jarrett is out and trips up Malenko. Patrick counts a three.. but it's actually two. Malenko puts a Cloverleaf on Wallstreet, but Nick Patrick was in the way. Weird.

Winner, and STILL WCW United States Champion: Dean Malenko

*1/4

Jarrett and Debra talk to Mean Gene. Jarrett wants a rematch for the US Title, and Dean Malenko accepts. Mongo is out and complains about Jarrett and how things he's been doing with Debra. Mongo then cuts a promo on Kevin Greene. Oh boy.

Match Six: Ciclope and Damien vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri

This plays out like Steiners/nWo earlier, with the Steiners hitting Booker T with a chair. Ciclope and Damien win.

Winners by pinfall: Ciclope and Damien

*

Lee Marshall is in Boston Massachusetts shilling Nitro from the Fleet Center.

Match Seven: Barbarian w/Jimmy Hart vs. Chris Benoit

Back and forth contest that sees Barbarian hit everything from a piledriver to that insane top rope belly to belly suplex. Of course, this doesn't stop Benoit as he wins with a Crippler Crossface after a headbutt.

Winner by submission: Chris Benoit

Postmatch, Benoit tells Hart that he did what he was asked to do. Hart tells Benoit he must face Meng AGAIN in a Death Match at Great American Bash. Uh.. right.

*1/2

Main Event: Scott Hall w/Syxx vs. Ric Flair

They fight four a good ten or so minutes, but a well placed shot with the belt to Ric Flair causes for the bell.

Winner by DQ: Ric Flair

Syxx and Hall beat up on Flair for a few minutes before Mongo runs out to help Flair. Hall and Syxx run off though.

**1/4

The nWo music starts up and Savage has Gene by the throat and demands to be interviewed. Savage calls himself the greatest wrestler ever. When Mean Gene disagrees, Savage physically threatens Gene again. James J Dillon is out now. Dillon and Savage argue for a few minutes, before Savage finally beats up Dillon. Bischoff and WCW Security is out and Bischoff tries to stop Savage. Eventually they hold Savage down on the ground. Bischoff grabs a mic and blames Dillon for what Savage did. The show ends with Bischoff telling DDP to 'snap into this.'

Overall, I'd say this was a slightly above average Nitro. There were a few good matches, and while there were some squashes, some matches did get plenty of time to develop. Not to mention they pushed more of the feuds going into Great American Bash. 5.5/10

TV Rating:
3.3

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Tony hypes up a 6/28/97 'Saturday' Nitro, which was a big house show that was broadcasted on the Internet. Assuming I can 'find' the entirety of the event, I might review that as well.

2. I'm surprised by how much they have been hyping up the debut on the 6/30 Nitro. I thought they'd forget it by now.

3. I should note that last week marked the final time Woman appeared on Nitro. She disappeared, with really no kayfabe reason, and was never mentioned again.

4. Also, I'm planning on doing the next PPV watchfest the 11th, at 10:00 AM CDT

^ I try NOT to skip any of Nitro, but I really did skip through I know five or six minutes of 'action' during that contest. What a huge letdown that was. Ah well, onto the next show.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
June 9th, 1997
Arena/Location: Fleet Center in Boston, Massachusetts
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start off with a pretape of Rodman and Hogan. The music playing over it is Voodoo Child. Basically, it was a hype up to Bash at the Beach.

After the opening vid, Tony welcomes us Nitro as he informs us that tonight we're seeing the Outsiders go against Piper/Flair in a non-title match.. Hmm. Before anything else happens, we go to the back where Elizabeth and Randy Savage are exitting a limo. DDP comes out of nowhere, Savage shuts the door, adn DDP kicks the window in. I know a guy who punched it in once. Elizabeth shuts the door on DDP as the limo speeds off.

Match One: Ultimo Dragon, Super Calo, Juventud Guerrera vs. Psicosis, Silver King, and La Parka

This was a good match two Nitros back, and I have HIGH expectations here.

Crazy as usual match that ends with Dragon hitting a hurricarana from the top rope on Psicosis, and getting the win via a dragon sleeper.

Winner by submission: Ultimo Dragon/Super Calo/Juventud Guerrera

Postmatch, La Parka has a chair and uses it against Super Calo. Neat!

Not as good as the other six man match, but a great opener for Nitro nonetheless. ***

Mean Gene is at the entranceway as he is ready to interview Luger. He's out there as he hypes up Luger/Giant vs. Hogan/Rodman at Bash at the Beach. He also tells us that tonight it will be Luger/Hogan. It's pretty much stated that it'll be for the title.

After a break, we get pretape of Mike Tenay interviewing Ric Flair and Roddy Piper. They hype up the match tonight.

Match Two: Alex 'Silly Dance' Wright vs. Chris Jericho

Back and forth matchup that ends with Wright winning after reveresing a flying crossbody and having his feet on the ropes.

Winner by pinfall: Alex Wright

Two straight matches that get more than three minutes? On MY Nitro? It's more likely than you think. **1/4

Match Three: Malaia Hosaka vs. Akira Hokuto w/Sonny Onoo

Short match that sees Akira Hokuto win with a brainbuster.

Winner by pinfall: Akira Hokuto

After a second brainbuster, Madusa ran out and gave Hokuto three german suplex

SQUASH

We are told the Luger/Hogan match actually ISN'T a title match. Well, s***.

After a break, Mean Gene is interviewing the Steiners. After Scott says they're the best tag team, the Harlem Heat are out. After a few words, all four men begin duking it out. Refs and security is out to break up the fight.

Match Four: Konnan vs. Mongo McMichael w/Debra

... Of course, this match doesn't go anywhere as Kevin Greene comes from nowhere and attacks Mongo. As this is going on, we see Konnan is in the ring and there is a broken broom there, indicating someone attacked. I can only assume Paul Orndorff did it.

No contest

N/R

Hogan is out with Bischoff for his match. He cuts a promo on Luger saying Luger can't beat him. As this is going on, Luger comes out, as well as the rest of the nWo.

Match Five: Hollywood Hogan w/nWo vs. Lex Luger

Partway through this match (and after a commercial) the broadcast team changes and Bobby Heenan is out.

Not a long match, as Luger is able to get the win with a Torture Rack.

Winner by submission: Lex Luger

*1/4

Hour Two Commentators: Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

After the match, Hogan and the nWo destroy Luger, with Hogan doing several legdrops of doom. After Luger is taken out of the ring, Hogan/Bischoff hype up the tag match at Bash at the Beach.

After the match, Mean Gene talk to JJ Dillon in the ring. Dillon says that Savage has been fined him $50,000. Savage won't suspended, since that's what Savage would want. Also, the match at Great American Bash will be an unsanctioned, No DQ, Falls Count Anywhere match. Savage shows up, threatens to hit Dillon again. DDP shows up, and wants Savage to come down. Savage looks like he will, but the security team stops a break from going out. Ah well.

Lee Marshall is in Chicago, Illinois shilling Nitro from the United Center.

Match Six: Jeff Jarrett w/Debra vs. Dean Malenko(c) for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

For some reason, Debra was late coming out to the ring.

Back and forth contest between these two. When Debra finally shows up, she distracts the ref. Both Malenko and Jarrett are down, and Eddie Guerrero shows up! He takes off his sling, and hits Malenko with a Frog Splash. Jarrett takes advantage and wins the match with a Figure Four!

Winner, and NEW WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Jeff Jarrett

**1/2 for a decent eleven minute TV match.

Mean Gene is at the entranceway with Jimmy Hart. Barbarian and Meng show up. Jimmy Hart introduces the third and final step to Kevin Sullivan... Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan cuts a promo on Benoit. Benoit finally is out as both men duke it out. Jacqueline tries to interfere, but Meng pulls her off before Meng puts the Tongan Death Grip on Benoit. Everyone is beating up on Benoit as they go to break.

Main Event: Outsiders w/Syxx vs. Ric Flair and Roddy Piper

It's clear that there will be a breakup soon between Flair and Piper as neither man was on the same page. This basically degenerates to a brawl as Syxx jumps in.

Winner by DQ: Flair and Piper

3/4*

As the five men are duking out, The Horsemen show up. The Horsemen and Wolfpack fight before the rest of the nWo are out. Kevin Greene randomly shows up to fight Mongo. Then, Harlem Heat/Steiners are out fighting. Hell, even Glacier/Wrath/Mortis are fighting. Luchadores are out duking it out. Savage eventually runs out, along with DDP.They are fighting all over the arena. The show eventually ends with the nWo beating up Page, Sting coming from the rafters, as he and Page go back up to the rafters to end the show.

Good Nitro. Good matches, VERY few squashes, Hogan lost cleaning, and a really chaotic ending that really hyped up the PPV, at least in my eyes did. Can't wait for it. 8/10

TV Rating:
3.4

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Hogan AGAIN did the Number One/Two/Three bit. Again, why didn't Maffew used these?

2. I should note that after ten months, the WCW/nWo World Title STILL has Giant's nameplate on it.

3. Hogan, Hall, Nash, and Syxx all had white shirts with black nWo lettering on them. I should note that at this point in time, there were LOTS of black and white nWo shirt variants, and they sold like hotcakes. It really doesn't surprise me to see the occasional fan wearing an nWo shirt in the crowd anymore.

4. Hollywood Hogan Stink-o-Meter: After a very long time of inactivity, the sitnk-o-meter went off as Hogan told the camera that Hollywood doesn't take any stinking prisoners!

5. Apparently, a big rumor at the time was that Raven was supposed to debut as Benoit's 'final step to Kevin Sullivan.' Whether or not it was true is up for debate, but that would've been a VERY interesting change in WCW history.

For those that missed Great American Bash, this is what happened.

Ultimo Dragon/Psicosis had a pretty opener that ended with Dragon winning with the Dragon Sleeper. The match got about fifteen minutes, but wasn't up to par with most of the recent show openers. I'd still give it at ***1/4 though

Steiners/Harlem Heat ended in a DQ win for Harlem Heat when Vincent showed up. It was a decent tag team contest that would have ended better with an actual pinfall. Ah well. **1/2

Hugh Morrus/Konnan was a pretty boring contest that saw Konnan win with his Tequila Sunrise submission. 3/4*

Glacier/Wrath was another semi-decent match with the stip that Mortis was handcuffed to a ring post. The match ended with Glacier hitting Wrath with a chain for the win. After that, the Terrible Trio beat up Glacier. *3/4

Madusa/Hokuto for the WCW Women's Title was probably the third best match on the card. Madusa 'injured' her leg early and actually sold it pretty well for the last five minutes of the match, but in the end she was forced to retire when Hokuto won with a Brainbuster. ***

Benoit/Meng Death Match II was about as good as the first, but Benoit won it when he had the crossface on Meng for a good minute before Meng actually tapped out. This was good because it put over the toughness of Benoit while Meng did look pretty strong as well. Both men were carried out on a stretcher. **1/2

Greene/Mongo was probably the stinker of the night, though it was mercifully kept short. Greene won this one when Jarrett 'accidentally' walloped Mongo with the Haliburton Briefcase 1/4*

Outsiders/Piper and Flair for the WCW World Tag Team Titles wasn't all that great. Flair left the match partway thorugh to duke it out with Syxx, and Hall/Nash practically destroyed Piper. This of course sets up the Piper/Flair feud they've been building up for a while now. *1/2

DDP/Savage was an 'unsanctioned' Falls Count Anywhere match. Both man really went all out in this match, and gave me a pretty satisfying main event. Savage won the match after Scott Hall came out and hit DDP with the 'nWo Drop' (Outsider's Edge), then Savage hit the Elbow Drop for the win. ***1/4

This was a decently built up PPV with each match having some sort of reasoning behind it. That's a good thing. What's better is that three matches ended up being ***+. A few negatives though is that this is the fourth straight PPV with now World Title match, only two title matches (one of which would be discontinued later that year) and technically the heel side won it 5/4 (and two of the face wins weren't exactly 'clean', either.) 5.5/10

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
June 9th, 1997
Arena/Location: United Center in Chicago, Illinois
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start Nitro with the nWo Limo pulling up, with Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child playing in the background. Rodman, Hogan, Wolfpack, Savage, and Bischoff are the ones that get out. They all make their way to inside the arena. Most are smoking cigars, as well. Hogan/Rodman challenge Giant and Luger for tonight. A notable thing here is that Rodman called Luger 'Lex Luthor.' Still, Rodman got a good pop from the Chicago crowd.

We go to the announce team as they hype up Nitro.

Match One: Glacier vs. Mortis w/James Vandenburg and Wrath

Glacier gets the win after the Cryonic Kick.

Winner by pinfall: Glacier

While it looks like Mortis and Wrath might again get the upperhand here, Ernest Miller runs out and helps Glacier. Okay then.

1/2*

Mean Gene is at the entranceway with Madusa. Madusa (having the weirdest 80's hair Ive ever seen), says goodbye to the fans, that last night was the end of her career. See you in 1999!

Match Two: Dean Malenko vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Before the match, Dean Malenko called out Eddie Guerrero, and challenged him to a match.

Dean pretty much controls Guerrero here, but near the end of the match, Eddie shows up. Dean sees him when he applies the Texas Cloverleaf onto Chavo.

Winner by submission: Dean Malenko

After the match, Dean Malenko chases down Eddie, as Eddie leaves.

*1/4

Match Three: Super Calo vs. La Parka

This was set up when La Parka smacked Calo with a chair the week before.

Like he did a few weeks back, Super Calo again does a suicide dive and ends up in the crowd. Calo did come back and win with a headscissors off the top rope.

Winner by pinfall: Super Calo

After the match, La Parka grabs a chair from under the ring and attacks Calo with it. Not a steel chair, but one of those plastic kiddy chairs.

3/4*

Mean Gene is at the entranceway ready to interview Luger and Giant. Luger accepts the challenge. Chances the match they've been hyping up for the PPV to end cleanly on Nitro? .01%

Match Four: The Amazing French Canadians w/Col. Rob Parker vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri

As usual, the AFC try to sing the Canadian National Anthem, but instead of actually trying to sing it, they attack Heat from behind. Smart move!

Despite the usage of Parker's boot, Harlem Heat is able to get the win with Booker T pinning Jacques Rougeau.

Winner by pinfall: Harlem Heat

James J. Dillon signs the Hogan/Rodman and Luger/Giant match tonight, before saying that Harlem Heat's win was tainted last night, and that next week we'll have Steiners/Heat again next week. Vincent shows up, and says Merry Christmas to Harlem Heat from the nWo. Heat beat up Vincent for his efforts.

Hour Two Commentators: Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan

Match Five: Syxx(c) w/Hall and Nash vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Mike Tenay stays on the commentary team for this match.

Rey Mysterio gets really close to winning the CW this time, hell he even takes out Hall and Nash, but a well placed spinning heel kick followed by the Buzzkiller gives the win to Syxx.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Syxx

After the match, Nash hits a Jackknife powerbomb on Mysterio

**1/2

Nash cuts a promo on Piper and Flair, then Hall introduces Savage. Elizabeth and Savage come out and Savage cuts a promo on DDP. DDP shows up, DDP says that after last night, he called 'an old friend' to help even the sides out. He implies it's Sting, but methinks it may be a more.. Perfect person.

Match Six: Chris Jericho vs. Ultimo Dragon

Before Jericho gets to the ring, Sonny Onoo offered Jericho a envelope full of cash for.. some reason. I assume to hurt Dragon. Jericho didn't take it.

A nice match that ends with Ultimo Dragon winning with a Tiger Suplex/bridge.

Winner by pinfall: Ultimo Dragon

Good, quick match. I'd prefer a good ten/fifteen minute match, but eh. **1/4

Lee Marshall is in Macon, Georgia shilling Nitro from the Macon Coliseum. .. Damn weasel jokes.

Mean Gene out to interview Roddy Piper. Piper starts off by telling Rodman he can't borrow his kilt. That actually gets a bit of heat for Piper. Piper says that he doesn't believe that Flair just left him for the wolves. This does bring out Ric Flair. Flair comes out and 'bows' to Piper. Flair then sarcastically asks Piper if he 'won the match' last night. Flair claims that he had the fight of his life with Syxx last night after they clean the curtains. They claim to still be buddies, but it's apparent things are slowly falling apart.

Match Seven: Vicious 'n Delicious (Bagwell and Norton) vs. Four Horsemen (Mongo and Jarrett) w/Debra

Bidoof, be happy you didn't have to see this. Bagwell AND Mongo going at it *shudders*

Back and forth tag bout that sees Bagwell getting the win after Mongo hit a tombstone piledriver on Jarrett, much to the crowd's approval.

Winner by pinfall: Vicious and Delicious

*1/4

Debra leaves with her husband as Bagwell poses in the ring.

Main Event: Luger and Giant vs. Rodman and Hogan

Hogan/Rodman banter back and forth for a few minutes. As Hogan/Rodman are about to leave, Luger and Giant finally show up.

Of course, the match isn't even a match as all four men just duke it out.

No Contest

The entire nWo is out now to destroy Giant/Luger as garbage is being pelted into the ring. Damn. The show ends with Hogan/Rodman standing tall.

Two decent matches, a non-main event, and some new feuds brewing. Not the best Nitro, but I have no complaints either. 5/10

TV Rating:
3.3

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Hollywood Hogan Stink-o-Meter: Man, nearly two years after their first feud, Hogan is STILL calling Giant stinky! He didn't call Giant stinky once, or even twice, but he called him stinky thrice!

2. Apparently, Super Calo broke a kid's arm when he landed in the crowd after his suicide dive.

3. I'm planning on doing Bash at the Beach next Thursday at 10:00 AM CDT.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
June 23rd, 1997
Arena/Location: Macon Coliseum in Macon, Georgia
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start Nitro off with a replay of the final moments of Nitro the week before: The nWo laying out and spraypainting Giant and Luger.

After the video package/pyro, Mean Gene starts Nitro off by welcoming DDP and Kimberly. Kimberly tells us that she called JJ Dillon and tonight's Main Event will be DDP/Hall one on one. Chances that match ends cleanly? .5%

Match One: La Parka and Damien vs. Public Enemy

Quick match that saw Damien go through a table, and La Parka hitting Johnny Grunge with a chair to get the win.

Winner by pinfall: La Parka and Damien

Squash

After a break, Mean Gene interviews Eddie Guerrero. Guerrero (who's getting decent heel heat) says that due to him not being medically cleared, he's gonna give his CW Title shot Chavo Guerrero Jr. Apparently, Chavo and Eddie aren't on the same page.

Match Two: Alex Wright vs. Chris Jericho

We get video from two weeks ago wherre Wright got a win over Jericho. This is apparently a return match.

Back and forth contest here. Wright looks like he'll put away Jericho a second time, but Jericho gets the win with the Liontamer.

Winner by submission: Chris Jericho

Bit of a five minute special, but I'm not complaining. *1/2

After the break, we go to the 1st hour trio that talk about the Hogan/Rodman and Giant/Luger match. Then, they show the footage of the Heat/Steiners match from GAB, and Dillon's ruling the next night.

Match Three: Steiner Brothers vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri for the #1 Contendership of the WCW World Tag Team Titles

Scott Steiner is growing a goatee. Hmm...

After several minutes of back and forth action with neither team having the clear advantage, The Steiners are able to get the win when Rick Steiner hits a top rope Bulldog on Booker T.

Winners by pinfall: The Steiner Brothers

**

After the match, the nWo B-Team (Bagwell, Norton, and Vincent) are out talking to Mean Gene. Bagwell says Scott Steiner's arms are going through atrophy. Sure. Bagwell says Vicious and Delicious are the new tag team on the horizon. The Steiners then hype up their match against Hall and Nash coming up very soon.

Mike Tenay is standing by the crowd as we get a special look at Ernest 'The Cat' Miller.

Match Four: Hector Garza vs. Villano IV

Hector Garza wins with a standing moonsault after several minutes of action.

Winner by pinfall: Hector Garza

3/4*

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan

Mean Gene is in the ring as he interviews Giant and Luger. Luger says that the match at Bash at the Beach will be on 'equal footing.'

Match Five: Chavo Guerrero Jr. vs. Syxx(c) w/Scott Hall for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Eddie Guerrero comes out partway through the contest to watch Chavo.

Chavo Guerrero does pretty well against Syxx, but an Outsider's Edge from Scott Hall stops Chavo in his tracks.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Syxx

After the match, Eddie watches on.

**

Match Six: Konnan vs. Steve 'Mongo' McMichael w/Debra

We get a quick recap of Konnan being hit with a broom a few Nitros back. I guess we're finally getting this match. Also, Jarrett is apparenty on a Horsemen probation. Okay..

Partway through this match, Hugh Morrus walks out, but secruity stops him. This distractions pays off as Mongo wins with a tombstone piledriver.

Winner by pinfall: Mongo McMichael

SQUASH

We get video of the 'road to Kevin Sullivan' for Chris Benoit.

Lee Marshall is in Las Vegas, Nevada as he shills Nitro from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Mean Gene is in the ring as he introduces Roddy Piper. Piper, being up to date on what is good pop cultural mainstrem, makes a reference to Batman and Robin. He says he's here to talk to Ric Flair. After making a joke about Flair, Ric is out. After a few tense moments between Mongo, Benoit, and Piper, Flair tries to defuse the situation. This fails as Piper starts swinging at Benoit and Mongo. Piper has the advantage, but after the Haliburton shot and crippler crossface, Piper and Flair are clearly not on the same side.

Match Seven: Glacier and Ernest Miller vs. High Voltage

The 'Trio of Terror' (Vandenburg, Mortis, and Wrath) watch this match from the entryway.

After a few quick moments, Glacier and Miller win after Miller hits a jumping spinning roundkick to Kaos.

Winners by pinfall: Glacier and Ernest Miller

The Trio of Terror run down to the ring, but there is no fighting.

SQUASH

Main Event: Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Page vs. Scott Hall w/ Savage and Elizabeth

Kimberly leaves once she sees Savage.

Scott Hall is able control this match for several minutes, but once it appears DDP is going to win with a Diamond Cutter, Savage runs in.

Winner by DQ: DDP

*1/4

As Savage and Hall are beating up on DDP, Sting is shown in the crowd. After stalling for a few seconds, Savage hits a few Elbow drops. Sting finally enters the ring and, after a Hall and Savage deliberate on the outside, try to attack Sting. However, Sting gets the upperhand with the basebat as Nitro goes off the air.

Nothing special on this Nitro. A few half decent matches, and the Flair/Piper feud has gotten hotter. We still don't know who the mystery partner is, or who's making their debut next week. Hell, we don't know if those two people are actually one in the same. I do admit Eddie's turn, has been pretty fun though. 4.5/10

TV Rating:
3.3. Both Raw and Nitro got the same ratings two weeks in a row.

Other Nitro Notes

1. For a brief amount of time, Scott Hall's Outsider's Edge was called the nWo Drop, I guess they changed it to something less stupid.

2. For some bizarre reason, both Piper and Flair thought that their tag match was at Slamboree, not at Great American Bash.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
June 30th, 1997
Arena/Location: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

Apparently (and this wasn't on the version I watched) Flair started Nitro off by hyping up Flair/Piper at Bash at the Beach, and there were two women involved. Also, Flair is supposed to be the heel there.

Match One: Chris Jericho(c) vs. Juventud Guerrera for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

We are told that Chris Jericho is the new WCW Cruiserweight Champion. This happened at the Saturday Nitro that they had been hyping up for nearly a month now.

Decent seven minute match here with a couple of blown spots that they covered pretty well. Chris Jericho wins it with a super frankensteiner off the top rope, then applies the Lion Tamer for the win.

Winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Chris Jericho

Alright match with a nice finish, but a few blown spots hurts it (along with the shortish amount of time given to it.) *1/4

In the ring, Mean Gene interviews Jericho. Before anything happens, Syxx is out. Jericho and Syxx banter back and forth before it devolves into a fight. After a break, and they're still fighting, but security pulls them apart. Alex Wright pops up and is now being interviewed by Mean Gene. Wright (Wearing Charlie Brown's shirt and looking like he's been hitting the juice) says he's being held down cause he's German. Right..

Match Two: Dean Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero

Before Dean can get very far to the ring, Eddie comes out of nowhere to blindside Malenko.

Five minute match that looks like Dean is coming back from the intial sneak attack, but Chavo comes out, and Dean seems to be distracted by him. Eddie takes advantage and gets the win after a frogsplash.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

*1/4

Rey Mysterio Jr. is out, and cuts a promo on the Wolfpack. He talks about how he's tired with things between him and them. Mysterio challenges Nash tonight for Nitro. Nash comes out, and says that he can do it tonight. Mysterio and Nash

Bischoff is out on a bike. Hogan comes out, and they're using Voodoo Child. In the ring, Hogan talks up the match later tonight between Luger/Giant/DDP vs. Hall/Hogan/Savage.

Match Three: Hector Garza vs. Steven Regal(c) for the WCW World Television Championship

Regal is wearing a singlet now.

Short match that sees Regal win it with a Regal Stretch.

Winner and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Steven Regal

3/4*

The Steiner Brothers are out. Scott (who seems to have stolen Nick Patrick's goatee) cuts a promo on the Wolfpack. The nWo B-Team (then regular) music starts up bringing out most of the entire group. Hall has a contract. He says they sign it, and they'll have them in a match. The Steiners sign it (without reading it.) Hall says the 'Einsteiners' haven't been the same since the traffic accident. The contract says that before they take on the Wolfpack, the Steiners must defeat Masahiro Chono and Great Muta. THAT should be good.

Match Four: Super Calo vs. Psicosis w/Sonny Onoo

Apparently Calo had a minor injury a few weeks back when he was hit with that plastic chair by La Parka.

Psicosis gets the win here because Sonny Onoo tripped up Calo.

Winner by pinfall: Psicosis

Super Calo attacks Psicosis a La Parka runs out with a chair, and uses it on Calo. Juvi comes out and helps out Super Calo. Juvi and Super Calo stand tall as Nitro goes to break.

Match Five: nWo (Bagwell, Norton, and Chono) vs. Four Horsemen (Flair, Benoit, and Mongo) w/Debra

Mike Tenay informs us that the three nWo men are members of nWo Japan.

The match breaks down, Vincent runs in, and we get a DQ.

Winners by DQ: Four Horsemen

Mongo gets the Haliburton and clobbers Vincent with it.

3/4*

We get a montage of the Sullivan/Benoit feud.

Match Six: Trio of Terror (Wrath and Mortis) w/James Vandenburg vs. High Voltage

Chaotic match as all four men duke it out. Glacier/Miller are out, Glacier causes a distraction, and Miller knocks Wrath out. Rage gets the win for his team.

Winners by pinfall: High Voltage

N/R

We go outside where a limo has pulled up. Before the person walks out, he closes the door again.

Lee Marshall is in Memphis, Tennessee shilling Nitro from the Mid-South Coliseum.

RAVEN!! is at ringside. The announcers speculate on him for a good few minutes.

Match Seven: Konnan vs. Jeff Jarrett(c) for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

Flair is out and helps Jarrett win it when Jarrett has Konnan in the leglock, and helps him with the leverage.

Winner, and STILL WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Jeff Jarrett

*

Mean Gene interviews the Horsemen. Jarrett says the Horsemen are jealous of him. Flair says that Jarrett is a fine athlete, great young man, but as of right now, no longer a Horsemen. Jarrett says Flair is jealous of him but Jarrett says that he will put Flair to pasture... then just leaves. Wait, what?! No beatdown?! Even after THAT insult?

Match Eight: Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Kevin Nash

If this had happened today, Mysterio would've probably won. Here? Squashed. One minute match that Nash wins with a Jacknife Powerbomb (and a foot on Mysterio.)

Winner by pinfall: Kevin Nash

Nash hits a few more powerbombs and hits the ref after the match. Konnan (of all people) runs out and... 'breaks' Mysterio's leg!

N/R

After a break, we see the Stretcher out to help Mysterio out. As they are doing this, Mike Tenay tries to interview Raven. Raven, has none of it and doesnt say anything. Interesting.

Main Event: nWo (Hall/Nash/Savage) w/Elizabeth vs. Giant/Luger/DDP

Nash had the toupee on his head. Funny.

Not really a match, and more like an all out brawl with all six men fighting each other. After a few minutes go on, the match ends when the nWo run out.

Winners by DQ: Giant/Luger/DDP

After the nWo beat down a Sting appears in the crowd, but the REAL Sting falls from the rafters. The nWo runs off, then Curt Hennig showx up! Raven jumps the rails and Nitro ends.

So, two BIG debuts on this Nitro. Both men fit DDP's bill as well. I think Raven managed DDP early in his career, and DDP managed Hennig when he was AWA World Champion. The big question though is WHO was on who's side? Aside from the ending, there were a few big things, but nothing bad. 6.5/10

TV Rating:
3.3. Nito has been consistently hitting the 3.3 mark since May 26th.

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Hollywood Hogan Stink-o-Meter: Of course, Hogan cut a promo on the Giant and what did he call him? STINKY!

2. Apparently the carpet on the entranceway caught on fire when the Hour Two pyro hit it.

3. Quote of the Night: "What's so hard about looking into a window?" Bobby Heenan, as the camera guy shows an OPEN window passenger side window.

4. The commentators act like Konnan has never been US Heavyweight Champion before.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
July 7th, 1997
Arena/Location: Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start off Nitro replaying the Main Event from the week before, with the debut of both Curt Hennig and Raven. We still don't know who the mystery partner for DDP is!

After the standard intro vid, Mean Gene welcomes Curt Hennig. Hennig tells us he's the best wrestler from Minnesota and the world. He's up there, for sure. He then informs us that he'll be participating at Bash at the Beach. Mean Gene summarizes that Hennig is in big tag match, but Curt doesn't give him a straight answer. Ric Flair and some random woman come out. Flair says that Hennig is joining the Four Horsemen. Hennig again doesn't give a straight answer. We then go to our first match!

Match One: Public Enemy vs. Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri

There is someone in the crowd wearing a huge troll head mask. Remember when those were popular? Tony tells us that Giant/Luger beating up Dennis Rodman would be a highlight of their career.

The ending of this match saw Vincent again come out, and Booker T chased him off. Stevie Ray was able to hold his own against PE, but Sister Sherri pushed Grunge off the top rope and onto Stevie Ray.

Winners by pinfall: Public Enemy

*1/4

Mean Gene talks to Harlem Heat and Sister Sherri in the ring. Gene accidentally called Vincent 'Virgil'. Booker T says that Sister Sherri is fired, then Sherri said "I'm not fired, I quit!" Well.. That was fast.

We get a video montage of Chris Benoit to hype up the Sullivan/Benoit match at BatB.

Match Two: Konnan vs. Joe Gomez

Rey Mysterio Jr. actually went out due to his need for knee surgery. Sorry Bidoof, I guess Mysterio's knees are starting to disappear. Raven is again in the front row, also.

Konnan wins this match with the Tequila Sunrise after a few minutes.

Winner by submission: Konnan

1/2*

Match Three: Juventud Guerrera and Hector Garza vs. The Villanos (IV and V)

Wild matchup that sees Juvi and Garza win after Guerrera hits Villano V? with a 360 Splash for the win.

Winners by pinfall: Juventud and Hector Garza

**

We go to the announce booth as they talk about the match we just saw, but before anything can be said, Hall, Savage, and Elizabeth come out. Tony and Mike run off as Larry stays behind. Hall and Savage cuts a promo on DDP and his 'mystery' partner. Crowd was loving this. Hall and Larry have a bit of a standoff as we go to break.

We get a 'very close and personal' interview with Giant and Luger. Giant and Luger talk about the World War 3 and Spring Stampede matches, before cutting a promo on Rodman and Hogan.

Match Four: Vicious and Delicious w/ Vincent vs. Los Guerrero (Eddie and Chavo Jr.)

Okay, so they weren't really called Los Guerrero yet <_<. Also, Eddie has new attire now.

A limo pulls up (and then drives off) before the match starts. Interesting..

It's apparent Eddie doesn't want to wrestle, as he constantly tags Chavo in. Eventually, Eddie leaves, and while Chavo tires to put up a valiant effort, he gets pinned by Bagwell after an assisted Blockbuster.

Winner by pinfall: Vicious and Delicious

This went on a bit longer than it should. *1/4

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

Larry Zbyszko doesn't want to leave his seat till Savage wrestles. Hmm...

Match Four: La Parka vs. Randy Savage w/Scott Hall and Elizabeth

Savage stalls for several minutes. Scott Hall sneaks to the announce booth and taunts Larry. Savage has La Parka down and goes for the Elbow Drop. La Parka counters and.. HITS THE DIAMOND CUTTER! La Parka takes his mask off and it's DDP! He goes for the pin and wins!

Winner by pinfall: Diamond Dallas Page

Scott Hall, thinking Savage won, celebrates, till he sees DDP. He runs to him but DDP escapes to the crowd.

A big shocker that the crowd LOVED. Not much of a match, but this is one of those moments that really stick out in people's minds. *

Match Five: Glacier and Ernest Miller vs. Psicosis and Silver King

Chavo and Eddie are in the back duking it out. Tony says they're sending someone in the back to stop them.. But they already got a camera guy back there >_>

After a few minutes, Mortis and Wrath come out and duke it out with Glacier and Miller.

Winner by DQ: Glacier and Ernest Miller

Psicosis and Silver King join in the foray as it's a six man duke out.

N/R

Lee Marshall is in Orlando Florida shilling Nitro from the Orlando Arena.

Mean Gene at the entranceway as he brings out Ric Flair and Ranomd Woman #25751. Flair again has the Piper mannequin. After Flair cuts a promo on Piper, the REAL Roddy Piper comes out. Ric Flair, being Genre Blind, doesn't realize Piper is right behind him. Flair and Piper are in the ring fighting it out. Piper is ripping off Flari's clothes. Flair's wearing green boxers, for those of you who wanna know. Piper has Flair in the sleeper when Benoit and Mongo come out. Piper holds his own against the three men for a few minutes before things turn to the Horsemen's favor. They are beating up Piper as Nitro goes to break again. As they are going to break, Jarrett runs out.

Mike Tenay is in the crowd trying to interview Raven again. Before Raven can say anything, Stevie Richards shows up (wearing a half shirt and cut off jean shorts, for those of you wondering, again) Richards says that Raven will only talk to his friend 'Dancing' Stevie Richards. Richards asks Raven if had signed a contract with WCW. Raven proceeds to smack Stevie Richards and leave. Stevie tries to cover his ass as he leaves.

Main Event: Four Horsemen (Benoit and Mongo) w/ Debra vs. The Steiner Brothers

In the back we see Savage attacking Nick Patrick.

Back and forth match that eventually breaks down. When it does, Jeff Jarrett runs out (again) and bats up on Mongo. Jimmy Hart, Kevin Sullivan, and Jacqueline are out as well. Sullivan yanks a chair away from Jacqueline as he smashes a chair over Benoit's head. The Steiners pick up the win due to the interference.

Winners by pinfall: The Steiner Brothers

The ref didn't see the broken chair pieces around? **1/4

Hogan and Bischoff are out. They are pelted with alcohol and trash as Hogan cuts an interview. After Hogan cuts a promo on Luger and Giant, they run out and attacks Bischoff and Hogan. The nWo run out and try to save the day, but they are destroyed as well. The show ends with Luger racking Bischoff.

Not much great action in the ring, but there was lots of good hype for damn near every match on the card. 7/10

TV Rating:
3.4

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Years later, DDP stated that the only people who knew he was La Parka was Savage, and the referee.

2. I've said it a few times, but Friday morning at 10:00 CDT is when I'm doing the Bash at the Beach Watchfest.

For those that missed Bash at the Beach, this is what you missed:

Mortis and Wrath defeated Glacier and Ernest Miller when Mortis hit Glacier with a superkick when he had a chain on his foot. Decent match, but nothing too memorable. *3/4

.
Chris Jericho defeated Ultimo Dragon to retain the WCW Cruiserweight Championship Jericho won it with a sunset flip. Like I said before, we didn't see this match, so N/R

The Steiner Brothers defeated The Great Muta and Masahiro Chono. Rick pinned Muta after a DDT from Scott to make the Steiners the number one contenders to the WCW World Tag Team Championship. We only saw the ending of this match, so again N/R

Juventud Guerrera, Héctor Garza, and Lizmark, Jr. defeated La Parka, Psicosis, and Villano IV. Garza pinned Villano V (who had switched places with Villano IV) after a standing moonsault. That really shows off how much of a jobber team the Villano's were. ***

Chris Benoit defeated Kevin Sullivan in a Retirement match Benoit pinned Sullivan after a Diving Headbutt. Pretty crazy brawl that went well with the other brawls they had. **3/4

Jeff Jarrett defeated Steve McMichael (with Debra McMichael) to retain the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. Jarrett pinned Mongo after hitting him with a steel briefcase handed to him by Debra. Short, thankfully 1/4*

Scott Hall and Macho Man Randy Savage defeated Diamond Dallas Page and Curt Hennig. Hall and Savage won after Hennig walked out on Page; Hennig left after attacking Page as he thought his partner deliberately pulled the top rope down on him. Savage won it for this team after hitting a DIving Elbow on DDP. ***

Roddy Piper defeated Ric Flair when Flair passed out while in a Sleeperhold. Good old school match that could've gone either way. ***1/4

Lex Luger and The Giant defeated Dennis Rodman and Hollywood Hogan when Luger forced Hogan to submit with the Torture Rack. Luger then made Rodman and Savage submit to the torture rack as well. *

Good action, and the right people went over for the most part. Unlike BatB 1996 which had one or two horrible matches, this was relatively free of bad matches. Good PPV, and set up alot of matches for Road Wild. 7.5/10

PPV Buyrates: .89, which was the same number WCW Uncensored 1997 pulled in (which also saw Hogan main event. I'm sure this was used by him to show he drew.)

I've said this a few times before, but the next Watchfest will not be Road Wild. The very next watchfest will be of the 100th episode of WCW Nitro (which was also their first Three hour Nitro.) That watchfest will take place on August 1st.

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
July 14th, 1997
Arena/Location: Orlando Arena in Orlando, Florida
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

Michael Buffer kicks off Nitro as he introduces us to the Nitro Girls! The women, while very attractive, aren't exactly what I'd call choreographed

The announcers talk about the mainstream media attention WCW has been getting due to Bash at the Beach. They then show 'Sting' from Bash at the Beach, and they believe it was Kevin Nash behind a mask.

Match One: Alex Wright vs. Prince Iaukea

In a pre-match interview, Alex Wright talks about how great he is.

About a minute in, The Giant walks out. He climbs into the ring while the match is going on. The ref tries to stop Giant, but Giant chokeslams him.

No Contest through interference

Giant then proceeds to chokeslam Iaukea. I approve! Alex Wright acts like a coward, and leaves. Random security guys run out to try and stop Giant, but six guys come in, six guys get chokeslammed. Giant grabs a mic and cuts a promo on Kevin Nash. The 'real' security team is in now, corners the Giant, and lead him out.

N/R

Match Two: Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.

Chavo is able to put up a decent fight against Eddie, but the beginning of the end starts for him when he tries to hit the Frog Splash on Eddie. Eddie moves out of the way, hits a powerbomb on Chavo, then hits Chavo with his Frog Splash to win.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

After the match, Eddie hits a second frog splash on Chavo. Hector is out to check on Chavo. Hector stops Eddie from hitting a third frog splash. Eddie pushes Hector and then leaves.

*1/2

Mean Gene is at the entranceway as he introduces Kimberly and Diamond Dallas Page. DDP talks about Hennig, and why he picked him to be his partner at Bash at the Beach. He said his first choice was Sting, but he knew that wasn't gonna happen. His second choice? Luger and Giant. But they had a match. He then says after his match last night, he isn't mad. He doesn't get mad. He gets even. Good promo.

After the break, we get another dance with the Nitro Girls.

Mean Gene again is out, as we get an interview with Harlem Heat. They said they're gonna take on the Outsiders later tonight.

Match Three: Vicious and Delicious w/Vincent vs. The Steiners

Partway through the match, Konnan gets out of a black Limo with the Wolfpack. Nash has a bad 'back'.

Back and forth tag match here that breaks down after the limo arrives. Vincent runs in and attacks Rick Steiner, giving V and D the advantage. This advantage only lasts a second as the Steiners are in full control. This leads to Chono and Muta out, and we have a five on two beatdown going on.

Winners by DQ: The Steiner Brothers

Scott Steiner is able to outpower the interferers, before destroying V and D.

*1/4

Mean Gene AGAIN at the entryway. We go to Bash at the Beach where Raven finally spoke up. He cuts an awesome promo as usual. We go back to Nitro where Mean Gene is talking to Raven (and Stevie Richards.) Raven cuts a promo saying that the announcement he talked about last night... is that there is no announcement. Stevie Richards talks up, but Raven beats him up. It apparently has something to do with a contract.

Match Four: Chris Benoit vs. Mike Enos

Benoit cuts a pre-match promo on Kevin Sullivan, and says it's time for him to 'be back as a Horsemen.'

Enos actually gets some decent offense in on Benoit, but Benoit comes back and wins with a crippler crossface.

Winner by submission: Chris Benoit

3/4* for a short but decent contest.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

We get another set from the Nitro Girls.

Match Five: Super Calo vs. La Parka

We get footage of the week before when 'La Parka' beat Savage.

This match barely gets off as Savage runs out to beat up La Parka. Of course, it's NOT DDP again, as DDP runs out and hits Savage from behind.

No Contest through Interference

Curt Hennig NOW runs out and klonks DDP with the brass knuckles, before walking out. Savage then hits DDP after the fact

N/R

Mean Gene is interviewing Curt Hennig. Hennig cuts a promo saying five years ago DDP was getting autographs from Hennig. Nine years ago, he was managing Hennig to a World Title. Flair runs out, and tries to recruit him into the Horsemen again. Mean Gene has no idea what's going on.

Lee Marshall is in Jacksonville, FL.schilling Nitro from the Jacksonville, FL Coliseum on Tuesday July 22nd. Good for them.

The nWo is out minus Hogan. Konnan is there with an nWo shirt. Nash is in a wheelchair. Bischoff claims Nash is injured. Bischoff ask Nash if he was the Sting Impostor from BatB. He says it wasn't him. They pose as Bobby and Tony argue about whether or not Nash was Sting.

Match Six: Wolfpack (Hall and Syxx) w/Kevin Nash vs. Harlem Heat in a Street Fight

Harlem Heat dominates the match, but once Syxx, Stevie Ray, and the Ref are outside, Nash gets up, jacknifes Booker T! Hall hits the Outsider's Edge on Booker T as well, and gets the win.

Winners by pinfall: Wolfpack

The Wolfpack are able to escape as Stevie Ray wonders what happened.

**

After the break, we get a fourth Nitro Girls danceoff.

Match Seven: nWo (Chono and Muta) w/Vincent vs. Public Enemy

Public Enemy dominated most of the match, but Grunge got a faceful of green mist. Chono hits a kick for the win. This despite Grunge NOT being the legal man...

Winner by pinfall: Chono and Muta

*1/2

Main Event: Jeff Jarrett(c) w/Debra vs. Ric Flair for the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

Good TV contest between these two. Near the end of the match, Debra is yapping into the camera. As she does that, Mongo comes out, yells at Debra, and gets into the ring. Flair has Jarrett in the Figure Four, but Mongo punches out Jarrett to... stop Flair from gaining the belt? WTF?

Winner and STILL WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Jeff Jarrett

Jarrett and Debra run off after a few second of beating him up.

Good match, bad ending. **3/4

Mean Gene in the ring as he welcomes Lex Luger. Luger says last night was one of his finest moments, and then he challenges Hogan for the World Title at Road Wild. Once he does that, the nWo music hits. It's eight men with the group, along with a 'fake' Sting in an obviously fake wig and a mask. The 'impostor' takes the mask and wig off, and it's the REAL Sting! The show ends with that reveal.

Eight matches. Two end cleanly, five end with some sort of outside interference, and the eighth match ended cheaply with green mist. While some storylines were pushed forward, it wasn't exactly what I'd call a strong Nitro. 4/10

TV Rating:
3.5 A nice bump up for Nitro!

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Mike Tenay announces that Clash of the Champions will happen at Nashville Tennessee, and says it hit a 'Triple Crown' of having a Nitro, Starrcade, and CotC in one year. Too bad that will be the last of the Clash.

2. During the Wolfpack/Harlem Heat match, Stevie Ray actually was watching the events going on in the ring as he was attacking Syxx. Whoops!

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
July 22nd, 1997
Arena/Location: Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, FL
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start this week with a dance number from the Nitro Girls. After quick dance set, we go to the announce booth where Tony informs us that there will be a new Horsemen tonight. Loud Larry chant that Zbyszko acknowledges.

Hogan and Bischoff are in the ring. Bischoff and Hogan lay down on the mat as they talk about Hogan and why fans watched wrestling in the 80's was BECAUSE of Hogan. Then he talk about 'Flexy Lexxy' and the title match at Road Wild.

Match One: Tsubasa vs. 'K-Dawg' Konnan

Barely a match here as Konnan wins with the Tequlia Sunrise in less than thirty seconds.

Winner by submission: Konnan

Postmatch, K-Dawg attacks Tsubasa.

SQUASH

Match Two: Steven Regal(c) vs. Ultimo Dragon for the WCW World Television Championship

Regal dominates early, but Ultimo Dragon is able to make Regal submit to the Dragon Sleeper to win!

Winner, and NEW WCW World Television Champion: Ultimo Dragon

Shorter match than I was expecting, but the crowd popped HUGE for the Dragon Sleeper. *1/4

Mean Gene interviews Ric Flair. Flair (wearing a polka dot shirt) says the current Horsemen had decided on a new member. When the music starts for him to come out, Syxx shows up. Syxx and Flair exchange words, and Flair claims he nearly lost his job because of him. As Flair's about to leave, he clocks Syxx with a right. Benoit comes out to aid Syxx, and apparently we got a tag match later tonight!

We get another Nitro Girls danceoff. Attractive? Yes. A well choreographed unit? No.

Match Three: The Great Muta vs. The Giant

The Giant FINALLY has music. It's been seven months, and he finally got new intro music.

A minute in, Giant goes for the chokeslam, Muta hits the mist, and we get a DQ called.

Winner by DQ: Giant

Vincent and Savage are out, and Giant is able to actually manhandle the three men despite being 'blind.' Luger runs out and, in an act of stupidity, nearly gets chokeslammed by the blind Giant. Luger screams in his ear though.

N/R

Match Four: Dean Malenko vs. Steve 'Mongo' McMichael

Malenko and Mongo fight for a few minutes, but Jarrett and Debra run out. Debra distracts the ref as Mongo chases Jarrett around the ring. While Mongo is distracted, Malenko attacks Mongo from behind and gets the win.

Winner by pinfall: Dean Malenko

3/4*

Mean Gene interviews Malenko. Jarrett interrupts the interview, and says he'd like to have Malenko as his partner. Malenko says that when he first entered WCW, he said he was by himself, but he also knows there's strength in numbers. He tells Jarrett he'd have his answer when Malenko's good and ready.

Match Five: Hector Guerrero vs. Eddie Guerrero

I said it before, I'll say it again, Hector and Eddie look like twins, despite a thirteen year age difference

Good back and forth match between these two. Despite Hector having a strong advantage early in, Eddie wins with the frogsplash.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

*1/2

Dean Malenko is out. He attacks Eddie as he punches and powerbombs him, before putting him in the Texas Cloverleaf. Hector is up and tells Malenko to let go. Dean doesn't do it, and Hector attacks him. Hector is checking on Eddie, but Eddie pushes him into Dean, who proceeds to beat HIM up.

We get Nitro Girls to start off Hour two. The tape of the version I'm watching was sorta fuzzy, so it doesn't look as appealing as you'd think.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

Mean Gene interviews JJ Dillon. Dillon has an announcement about Raven. Stevie Richards comes out to announce that he has signed a contract with WCW. Stevie Richards leads Dillon and Mean Gene to Raven. Richards apparently made the deal, and Raven is unhappy about it, then tears the contract up.

Match Six: Lex Luger vs. Scott Norton w/Buff Bagwell and Vincent

Bagwell and Vincent interfere, but Luger is able to clean house. He doesn't rack Norton though.

Winner by DQ: Lex Luger

Luger starts cutting a promo on Hogan. Hogan comes out, and both men cut promos against each other.

Hall and Nash have entered the arena. Instead of talking in front of the camera guy, they decide to go somewhere private to talk. I wonder when WWE will start doing something like th-

Airdate: July 22nd 1997

Oh, yeah.

Lee Marshall is in Charleston, West Virgina shilling Nitro from the Charleston Civic Center.

Match Seven: Wrath and Mortis w/James Vandenburg vs. Psicosis and La Parka w/Sonny Onoo

Flair and Hennig are talking in the back. Hennig was to join.

Back and forth match that sees Mortis get the win after he and Wrath hit a combo powerbomb neckbreaker. Wow.

Winners by pinfall: Wrath and Mortis

After the match, La Parka hits Mortis with a chair, but Wrath cleans his clock with a big boot.

Short but good match with an awesome ending. *1/2

Match Eight: Buff Bagwell w/Norton and Vincent vs. Booker T

Despite Booker T getting all sorts of help from Nick Patrick, interference by Scott Norton stills sees Bagwell win with the Blockbuster.

Winner by pinfall: Buff Bagwell.

After the match, the three men beat up on Booker T.

*1/4

Mean Gene interviews Rey Mysterio Jr.. Gene claims he's been gone for over a six weeks, despite being gone for only three. K-Dawg is out and knocks out Mysterio's crutches. SeveralLucha Libre stars come out ot back up Mysterio.

Match Nine: Michael Wallstreet vs. Curt Hennig

Short match that sees Hennig win with the Hennig-plex after thirty seconds.

Winner by pinfall Curt Hennig

DDP runs out of the crowd and attacks Hennig from behind. Both men go back and forth before DDP hits a Diamond Cutter on Hennig.

SQUASH

We get another Nitro girls danceset before the main event.

Main Event: The Outsiders(c) w/Syxx vs. Four Horsemen (Flair and Benoit) for the WCW World Tag Team Titles

Back and forth contest between these two teams that got about nine minutes. Benoit was able to hold his own against both Nash and Hall while Flair took care of Syxx on the outside, but a Big Boot from Nash ended it, and gave the Outsiders the win.

Winners, and STILL WCW World Tag Team Champions: The Outsiders

**1/4

Syxx had the buzzkiller on Flair, but Mongo ran out to help Flair. The Steiners stood at the entryway as Nitro ended.

Four of the six matches that ended cleanly weren't squashes. The other four ended either in DQ or interference. Decent action though, and some nice feud building. 5.5/10

TV Rating:
3.8, which is high considering this was on Tuesday instead of the usual Monday. Raw also hit the low 4's with a 4.1 on that uncontested night.

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Hollywood Hogan Homoeroticism Meter: The meter went off unexpectedly when Hogan and Bischoff laid down next to each other in the ring and talked about the problematic man in their life, before Bischoff tells Hogan he 'loves' him. Er.. Yeah.

2. Remember: Monday at noon CDT for the first ever Nitro watchfest

WCW Nitro
Airdate:
July 28th, 1997
Arena/Location: Charleston Civic Center in Charleston, West Virgina
Hour One Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko

We start Nitro off with the Nitro Girls... Riverdancing. Remember when that was all the rage?

Match One: Vicious and Delicious w/Vincent vs. Flair and Hennig

Back and forth contest that saw Syxx try to interfere (with a butt shot from Flair, ugh) but Hennig won with his Hennig-plex on Bagwell to win.

Winners by pinfall: Flair and Hennig

Decent opener for Nitro, though I've seen better. *1/2

We get another Nitro Girl's danceoff. After that, we go to Mean Gene in the ring where he interviews Luger. Luger notes that the title match will happen next week on Nitro!

Match Two: Prince Iaukea vs. Ultimo Dragon(c) for the WCW World Television Championship

Back and forth contest that sees Dragon retain with the Dragon Sleeper.

Winner and STILL WCW World Television Champion: Ultimo Dragon

Decent but quick match. *1/4

We go to Mean Gene who's at the entryway as we get our weekly Flair promo. Flair (still in ring attire) Flair tells us that Hennig is the newest member of the Horsemen. Hennig however says that he's not a Horsemen. Flair still believes he's a Horsemen though. Mongo and Benoit are out now, and some random woman. Hennig is still going on about not being a member of the Horsemen.

Match Three: Four Horsemen (Benoit and Mongo) vs. The Texas Hangmen

Partway through the match, Hall and Nash call into Nitro and talk to the announcers. They say they are in Michigan looking for Steiner fans, but can't find any.

Benoit wins this match by putting the Crossface on one of the members.

Winners by submission: Four Horsemen

3/4*

We get our third Nitro Girls danceoff. Tony sounds a bit too excited for them.

Match Four: Alex Wright vs. Chris Jericho(c) for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

At one point, the crowd starts a... very un-PC chat. Let's just say that they may have called Wright a bundle of sticks.

Back and forth matchup that ends in a shocker when Alex Wright wins with a German Suplex Pin.

Winner, and NEW WCW Cruiserweight Champion: Alex Wright

After the match, Wright dances over the belt.

Rush match, but decent. *3/4

Mean Gene to interview Dean Malenko, but Jarrett and Debra are out as well. While Jarrett and Dean are talking about their alliance, Debra has a few words with Wright. Malenko and Jarrett are now allied to each other. Interesting.

Hour Two Commentators: Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan

Match Five: Syxx vs. Diamond Dallas Page w/Kimberly Page

The crowd is super hot for DDP.

DDP is doing well here, even hitting Syxx with the Diamond Cutter, but the interference of Vincent (and more importantly) Curt Hennig gives Syxx the win here.

Winner by pinfall: Syxx

Short match, but the crowd hated that ending. 3/4*

Match Six: Hector Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko

This match get a bit more time than I was expecting, but Dean wins when Hector gets distracted by Jarrett and Debra, putting the Texas Cloverleaf on Hector to get the win.

Winner by submission: Dean Malenko

Chavo is out as he checks on his uncle, but he gets his ass handed to him as well.

*1/4

Konnan and Mean Gene are out. Konnan insults Gene before Konnan cuts a promo on Mysterio.

Match Seven: Giant vs. Great Muta

Before the match starts up, Savage is in the crowd as he cuts a promo on Scott Steiner

After Muta gets in the ring, Bischoff comes out. He and Tony call this match.

Giant wins this one with a chokeslam.

Winner by pinfall: Giant

Larry comes out and takes Bischoff to the ring where Giant chokeslams him

1/2*

We get a Nitro Girl dance. Again.

Match Nine: La Parka w/Sonny Onoo vs. Konnan

Quick match that sees Konnan win with the Tequila Sunrise.

Winner by submission: Konnan.

Psicosis runs out, but doesn't do anything.

SQUASH

The announcers talk up Luger/Hogan next week before we get a call from JJ Dillon. He talks about Sting and him trying to get Sting in a match by September.

Main Event: Randy Savage w/ Elizabeth vs. Scott Steiner w/Rick Steiner

Back and forth matchup that ends in (surprise surprise) interference when Hall and Nash show up and attack the Steiners from behind.

Winner by DQ: Scott Steiner

After Savage hits the big elbow, the Giant runs in and the nWo run off, but the damage has already been done. Giant grabs a mic and calls out Nash. Nash claims he isn't going to go through the security, but the Security gets out of the way as Hall, Nash, and Savage act like they're going to the ring, but before anything happens, Nitro goes off the air.

Good buildup to both the next Nitro AND to Road Wild. Good action, lots of feuds built up, future feuds pushed. The problem though is that the nWo had a guy in the majority of the matches. Despite that, the nWo lost three of the matches, and the only clean win they got was Konnan against La Parka in a squash. Still, nothing bad on this show.6.5/10

TV Rating:
3.4, which is the lowest rating Nitro will hit for next year and a half. Things, are about to pick up...

Other Nitro Notes:

1. They replayed the Giant chokeslamming Bischoff several times during Nitro, and Tony went crazy about the spot.

2. Well, as you can all tell, this topic is about to hit 500. This is going to be my last Nitro for this topic. For the next show, I'm going to start it off with a watchfest of the next Nitro, which was not only the 100th episode, but also the first three hour show they did. For those that don't know, that'll be Monday at 12:00 CDT
