WCW Monday Nitro brings a whole of lot memories to wrestling fans. People remember the Fingerpoke of Doom that marked the beginning of the end for WCW, the Russo era that was basically Raw-lite, and other unsavory moments.

Well, I'm here to tell you that I've taken it upon myself to watch every episode of Nitro. Not just that, but also the good years (1996-1998) as well as the still pretty bad 1995-1996 era. Why am I doing this? The 10 year anniversary of WCW Nitro is coming up pretty soon, and I figure it would be nice to look back at the one organization that not only surpassed the WWF at one time, but may have been able to get rid of them completely had it not been for their own mishaps. That though, is still some time away.

I'll have the first review up shortly.

Airdate September 4th 1995
Arena/Location: Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

We start off with some at ringside with the commentators running down the card. Bischoff said there are surprises in store as well. Wonder who he means by that. Anyways, let's get to our first match!

Match One: Jushin 'Thunder' Liger vs. 'Flyin' Brian (aka Brian Pillman).

This was before Brian PIllman developed the "Loose Cannon" gimmick.

The match itself is a good, though at one point Liger botches a hurricarana from Pillman. Liger dominates most of this match, but Pillman gets the win with a quick rollup.

Pillman celebrates his win and shows respect to Liger by raising his arm in victory.

Winner by pinfall: Flyin' Brian

Good match that lasted around six minutes. The one botch hurt it, but for the time they had it was good. ***

Promo with Sting. He's also the US Champion. He hypes up his match with Ric Flair later on tonight by saying that there is no way Flair can beat him. Not like he's done it dozens of times before, huh?

Earlier that day, Bischoff catches up with World Champ Hulk Hogan at Pastamania (Hogan's restaurant) Hogan's first words? "Who's the greatest wrestler in the world!" The 'Pastamaniacs', as Hogan calls them, are screaming his name. Who says Hogan ever had an ego?

Hogan hypes up his restaurant, then his match with Big Bubba Rogers, which is for the World Title. He said he's gonna give Big Bubba a dose of his Hulk-A-Roos. Guess he's gotta get people to eat that cra- food somehow.

Match Two: Sting(c) vs. Ric Flair for the WCW United States Championship

Before the match begins, Lex Luger shows up by walking down the aisle. This is a big deal since he was in the WWF not too long ago.

Arn Anderson comes out as well. While Arn is at ringside, Mongo theorizes that Luger was there to get some of that Pastamania. The end comes when Flair doesn't let go of the ropes while he's applying the figure four on Sting, causing a DQ. Arn enters the ring and attacks Flair, then chases him out of the arena.

Winner by DQ and STILL WCW US Champion: Sting

The story here is that Arn was turning on Flair, with Flair becoming a face. *3/4

Scott Norton shows up and is yelling at the commentators. He stares down Mongo McMichael before Randy Savage comes out. Bischoff stops it from ending in a brawl by stating a match will be made next week.

They cut to a video package for Sabu. Sabu was fired from ECW earlier for no-showing an event.

Another hype video as Michael Wallstreet aka IRS hypes himself up.

Main Event: Hulk Hogan(c) w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Big Bubba Rogers for the WCW World Title

While Big Bubba comes out, Mongo asks where this guy is from. At least he didn't ask how much does he weighs. Typical Hogan match here. At one point, Heenan calls McMichael 'McNugget' and I admit I laughed at that one. Hogan wins by hitting a legdrop of doom.

Winner by pinfall, and STILL WCW World Champion: Hulk Hogan

Not a horrid match, considering who was involved. *1/4

Hogan in the ring as the Dungeon of Doom show up. Luger comes out to help Hogan. They then confront each other. Crowd is hot as Sting and Savage come out as well. Mean Gene comes out to get an interview. Hogan states Luger has no business there. Luger demands a WCW World Title match, then Hogan gives him one next week.

Back to the announce table as Bischoff hypes up next week, Mongo states that if you don't turn in you got a screw less. Then he proceeds to talk to his dog Pepe as the show ends.

Not a terrible debut for Nitro. Crowd was hot, and the matches weren't terrible. 7/10

Airdate: September 11th 1995
Arena/Location: Knight? Center in Miami, Florida
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

Bischoff starts off Nitro by stating that the crowd's jam packed to see 'the match of the century,' Hulk Hogan vs. Lex Luger for the title. Apparently Bischoff didn't watch much wrestling. They also hype up the Fall Brawl PPV coming up Sunday. Vader, who was a part of the WarGames match at Fall Brawl, was fired for fighting with Paul Orndorff, though they didn't say that.

Match One: Sabu vs. Alex Wright

Bobby Heenan (On Mongo): "How long is he gonna be here with us?

Eric Bischoff: He's going to be here a long, long time.

I seriously doubt that.

This was another fast pace match to kick off Nitro, though it only lasted about four minutes. Sabu ended up getting the pin.

Postmatch, Sabu grabs a table, sets Alex Wright on top of it, and dives off the top turnbuckle into Wright, breaking the table. Referee Nick Patrick reverses the decision.

Winnder by DQ Alex Wright

Not as good as Liger/Pillman last week, but definitely entertaining. **1/4

Match Two: Sting(c) vs. Michael Wallstreet for the WCW United States Championship

For some reason, Michael Wallstreet is introduced as V.K. Wallstreet. V.K.? I wonder who that's a reference to >_>.

Sting pretty much dominates V.K. throughout the match. He wins with a Stinger Splash to the corner, then a flying crossbody off the top turnbuckle.

Winner by pinfall, and STILL WCW United States Champion: Sting

Sort of a squash, but V.K. did get a little offense. Crowd was hot for Sting. *3/4

Match Three: Randy Savage vs. Scott Norton

Norton dominates Savage, and keeps pointing at Mongo at the booth. Savage is also apparently hurt during the match. The DoD interfere, but Shark is knocked out when Savage throws Norton at him. He falls onto Norton's legs, pinning him down. Savage hits the diving elbow for the win.

Postmatch the DoD enters the ring while Savage gets away. Norton is in the ring and is yelling at Shark, while the rest of the DoD stand around then leave.

Winner by pinfall: Randy Savage.

*1/4 from me.

Main Event: Hulk Hogan(c) vs. Lex Luger for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

The 'match of the century' was pretty dull. Match ended with Hogan hulking up, hitting the moves of doom, and was going for a three when the DoD came out to attack Hogan.

Winner by DQ, and STILL WCW World Champion: Hulk Hogan

Crowd was hot, but the action was not. 3/4*

They are destroying Hogan, while Savage and Sting are out, Hogan's no sells the beating and helps destroy the DoD.

Mean Gene comes out and asks about the WarGames match. Hogan talks about Vader being gone, and asks why DoD didn't attack Luger. Sting thinks that Luger should be on their team at WarGames, though Savage doesn't want any part of it. Hogan asks Luger to join, he says yes, so long as he gets a title shot.. again.

Back to the announce booth as Bischoff hypes up Fall Brawl. Mongo's got Pepe at his side.

Next week on Nitro: Paul Orndorff vs.Johnny B. Badd, and the Blue Bloods vs. either the Nasty Boyz or American Males. That ends the show.

Pretty average Nitro. Nothing too bad, but nothing that stood out as memorable, either. 5/10

Other Nitro points

This is pretty much me talking about what was done/said/I feel like commenting on Nitro that I couldn't fit into the review because of the length.

1. Unlike last week, they were actually at where they would be for future Nitros here, which was away from ringside. I remember for a while JR and Lawler were set away from ringside when Bischoff was GM. I always liked that setup, for some reason.

2. They hyped up the debut of Disco Inferno, which was going to happen on WCW Saturday Night. That was always a funny gimmick, though it was an obvious comedy character gimmick that would never give him a world title push.

3. Flair had an interview in the ring, where he was talking about Arn Anderson. Partway through the interview, Luger randomly walked out, and after a few more seconds of Flair's ranting, Flair acknowledged him. What did Luger say? "Flair, things never change. You are too much." Luger then left. Flair finished up his interview.

4. Eric Bischoff and the commentary knocked WWF Raw several times during this show, unlike last week which they hardly mentioned. They gave away results of what had happened on Raw that week, Mongo said they named it after uncooked eggs, and stating that Luger came from the bush leagues to come where the big boys played. Bischoff states that Luger won't be the last. How true those words were.

5. Bischoff also pointed out the WWF's champion at the time (Kevin Nash/Diesel) was a midcarder in WCW, yet champion there. Three years later, Nash won the WCW Title after a "shocking" finish that would lead to.. Well, I don't want to spoil what happens, do I?

Raw wasn't on at its normal time the week that Nitro debuted. Pre-empted for the US Open. Pretty savvy move by WCW.

Unless I'm mistaking, Luger's final appearance in the WWF was at Summerslam, which happened eight days before the first Nitro. Though no one in WCW or the WWF knew he signed except probably Sting and Bischoff himself.

Supposedly he was at house shows on Saturday and Sunday for the WWF, then showed up on Nitro on Monday.

Granted, I was not at these house shows but that's how the legend goes.

Well you got me beat, Jakyl. I always thought his final appearance was at SummerSlam, though I guess that was only TV appearance. Good find.

He doesn't beat Rick Rude though, who appeared on Nitro and Raw the same day (one hour apart, since Raw was taped six days prior,) plus ECW Hardcore TV just a few days earlier.

Quick, how many gimmicks from that Houseshow have been inducted into Wrestlecrap?

Airdate: September 18th 1995
Arena/Location: Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tennessee
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

We kick off Nitro with the commentators sending it back to Mean Gene, who's standing in front of an ambulance, which has Kevin Sullivan and The Giant (Big Show) coming out of it. The Giant proclaims himself the only immortal. There can be only one.

Match One: American Males (Scotty Riggs & Marcus Bagwell) vs. The Blue Bloods (Lord Steven Regal & Earl Bobby Eaton)

Before the match starts, Harlem Heat attacks The Blue Bloods as they are coming out.

Booker T gets on the mic and states that, since Harlem Heat are tag team champs, they're deserve a match on Monday Nitro. So, they are going to put the titles on the line against the American Males!

Match One: American Males vs. Harlem Heat(c) w/ Sister Sherri for the WCW World Tag Team Champions

The American Males have suspenders on. Big fans of Larry King, I see. There's also a sign in the crowd that says 'We want it RAW'

During the match, Col. Rob Parker comes to ringside. He was apparently dating Sister Sherri, and they leave together. This distracts Harlem Heat long enough for Marcus Bagwell to get the pin!

Winner by pinfall, and NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions: American Males

Bischoff wonders if it is indeed a legit title switch since Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel wasn't there to sanction it. Still, American Males celebrate with the titles.

Decent tag team match to start off Nitro. Harlem Heat were always a good team. **

Mean Gene interviews Ric Flair in the ring. Flair is going against Brian Pillman, who turned heel the night previous by helping out Arn Anderson in his match against Flair. Flair hypes up his match against Pillman.

Match Two: 'Mr. Wonderful' Paul Orndorff vs. Johnny B. Badd.

First thing out of Mongo's mouth when the match starts? "People, get out of that refrigerator! This is bigger than rooster season at the hen house." I swear this dude had an unnatural obsession with farms, which Heenan points out.

Johnny B. Badd dominates this matchup from the beginning, but loses to a rollup.

Winner by Pinfall: Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff

Not a good match. Orndorff was very limited to what he could do due to the injuries to his body. I think Badd should've won though. Orndorff retired less than three months after this. *3/4

Mean Gene to interview Savage. Savage talks about Hogan, and mentions Hogan is watching Nitro on his 'videoscope.' Then talks about Hogan's choice to pick Luger for WarGames, and that the DoD may have three new members soon: Luger, Sting, and Hart. This brings out Luger. Luger and Savage have a big confrontation, but Mean Gene is able to keep them from going to blows.

We then get see what the Giant did to Hogan at the PPV. He apparently 'broke' Hogan's neck.

Main Event: Flyin' Brian Pillman vs. Ric Flair

Competitive match here that Flair wins with a Figure Four leglock.

Good match that only went about seven minutes. Definitely match of the night **3/4

Post-match, Flair is calling out Arn Anderson. He doesn't come out, so Flair promises to kick his ass next week on Nitro.

Next week on Nitro: Disco Inferno vs. Alex Wright, Savage vs. Taskmaster, and Luger vs. Meng. Also, Heenan states something was going on in the back.. but we never get to see what it was. Weird.

The matches were okay, but there were a few odd angles, which I'll explain in the next post, but overall I'll give this a 5.5/10

The ratings for this episode: 2.4, which was a drop from the debut (2.9), and the week prior (2.5). Obviously, not many people cared about the PPV.

Other Nitro notes

1. It's apparent that at this point WCW Saturday Night was still a pretty major show for WCW TV. They were hyping up an exclusive update to Hulk Hogan there.

2. At one point, there was a video package on the set of Baywatch where we saw Randy Savage doing bench presses while Luger spots him. Several women from Baywatch cheered Savage on. The Taskmaster shows up and starts choking Savage with the weights. The women who were cheering Savage on? They're now standing there with their backs to what's going on. Flair and a few other people help Savage and chase Taskmaster away.

This was a really weird angle, since Savage and Luger haven't seen eye to eye since Luger returned, yet Savage trusted him enough to let him spot him? Also, why didn't the women actually do something? It was more confusing than anything else.

3. We got a glimpse from just prior to the Fall Brawl Hogan came out on his bike. He talks down Kevin Sullivan and the DoD. While he is doing this, a monster truck (driven by The Giant) comes from nowhere (somehow) and runs over Hogan's bike (repeatedly.) Hogan throws his helmet at the truck, then starts yelling at the Giant, who's laughing evilly. Hogan however, apparently doesn't know how to open up the door to the truck, as he just stands there and keeps beating on the door of the monster truck, yelling at The Giant.

This angle was more silly than serious. Hogan shows up while wearing his ring attire. He doesn't wear normal clothing like most people, he drives his bike as though he's about to compete in the match. Can you picture him doing this on a normal day? Not only that, but him not opening the door and beating the crap out of The Giant just made Hogan look like he was incapable of operating a door handle.

Airdate: September 25th 1995
Arena/Location: Florence Civic Center in Florence, South Carolina.
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

Nitro kicks off with the commentators hyping up Nitro, but they quickly kick it off to our first match!

Match One: Alex Wright vs. Disco Inferno

Inferno comes out to a strangely catchy disco song. Man, I feel bad for remembering this song, many years later. Disco Fever, yeah yeah yeah yeah!

Inferno is able to dominate most of the match, but Wright reverses a neckbreaker into cradle for the win.

Winner by pinfall Alex Wright

*3/4 from me. These two put on a decent fast paced match, but they only got about four minutes.

We go to the back with Hogan (in a neck brace) and Jimmy Hart. Hart has the belt on top of Hogan's head, as he bend up and down. Hogan says he's gonna take down the 'stinky' Giant. Does he call all his opponents stinky? Hogan is hyping up that Monster Truck Battle they would have at Halloween Havoc. I am so glad I'm not watching PPVs as well.

We go to Mean Gene in the ring with Randy Savage. He talks smack about Lex Luger, who proceeds to run out. Luger says Savage has a severe lack of respect for him. So does Billy Whatshisname. Luger wants a match against Savage next week on Nitro Luger states that he'll leave the WCW if he doesn't beat Savage.

Match Two: Kurasawa w/ Col. Parker vs. Sgt. Craig Pittman.

Kurasawa pretty much squashes Pittman here. Nick Patrick seems to have messed up the three count, but Kurasawa wins with a belly to back suplex into a bridge.

Winner by pinfall: Kurasawa

*1/4 This was basically a squash match that showcased Kurasawa. Pittman got a little offense in, but nothing too impressive.

Mean Gene talking to Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman in the ring. They talk about Flair and how he has no friends. Good promo from both of them.

They show some of the video from last week where The Taskmaster choked Savage with the barbell. Weird way to set up a match.

Match 3: The Taskmaster w/ Zodiac vs. Randy Savage

Taskmaster dominates the early part, but Savage goes crazy and throws the referee out of the way after Savage brings in Zodiac.

Postmatch, Savage does a flying elbow on Zodiac, though both men were stacked on each other. Giant comes out and chokeslams Savage. Some random dudes come out, but are pummeled by Giant. Crowd explodes as Luger comes out and gets over Savage, but Giant chokeslams Luger, though Taskmaster isn't quite happy about that.

Winner by DQ: The Taskmaster

The match wasn't really entertaining, but the crowd got super hot when Luger came out, then were confused when he didn't immediately attack Giant. Eh.. 3/4*.

Main Event: Lex Luger vs. Meng

The commentary wonders what Luger's plan was while Meng takes advantage of Giant's chokeslam on Luger. Luger gets a second wind, but Meng wins with a spike to Luger's throat.

Winner by pinfall: Meng

Not a very thrilling match, and it went for about eight minutes. Bout the most technical move I saw was a headlock. 1/2*

While the first match was entertaining, the rest of the matches were definitely a step down. The promos with Arn, Pillman, and Savage were good, but promos alone don't make a good wrestling show. 4.5/10

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Did you know: TNT actually had a Saturday Nitro? No, it had nothing to do with wrestling, but they showed a whole lot of action movies. Why the hell did the reuse the same name for Monday Nitro?

2. There was a random guy in the crowd who looked like Bob Saget. They showed him right before Arn Anderson came out, and I couldn't help but think Anderson sorta looks like the Tourette's Guy.

3. During the Luger/Meng match, Bischoff states that Luger is trying to cover... The Total Package Lex Luger. No one points it out though.

4. Throughout the show, Heenan states that Pepe pooped on his shoe. He ends Nitro by getting a paper towel, and cleans his shoe off. Why did we need to see that?

Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, 'The Wild Thing' Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

Hey, they finally replaced Vader in the intro video. That only took three weeks.

We start off Nitro with Ric Flair coming to the announce desk, grabbing Bischoff's headset, and hyping up his match with Arn Anderson later on.

Match One: Lex Luger vs. 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. If Luger loses, his career in WCW is over.

The finish comes when Savage goes for the pin, the referee was knocked out. Savage tries to help the referee up.Giant comes out, chokeslams Savage, then leaves. Luger puts the Torture Rack on Savage, and Luger wins.

Winner by pinfall, and STILL in WCW: Lex Luger

They have been putting over Giant huge the past few weeks. The match itself? Alright considering Luger was involved. *3/4

Back to the commentary team. They are still talking about the Giant's interference in the previous match.

Match Two: Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko

These two are having a good match, but then they decide to cut from the match for a minute to have Hogan get out of his vehicle and say why he's going to stay in the building while the Giant is there

Match ends with both men countering each other several times, the Eddie getting the pin.

Postmatch: Dean stops Eddie from leaving the ring, and demands another match. Eddie agrees then shakes Dean's hand.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

***1/4. We definitely need more that that.

Mean Gene in the ring to interview Hulk Hogan. Hogan talks about the 'stinky' Giant. In an un-Hulk Hogan like move, Hogan gives his shirt to someone in the audience after ripping it off his body, then goes around ringside greeting fans when Taskmaster (dressed as a woman) attacks Hogan with powder and a cane.

Giant and Zodiac come out, Giant rips off Hogans neck brace to again do a neck crank like move to him. Taskmaster shaves off Hogan's mustache. Bischoff says this is the goes beyond bodily harm. Er, okay. Heenan says it's about time someone shaved off that greasy mustache of Hogan's.

American Males out to help Hogan, but Giant decimates them. Nasty Boyz comes out as well, but Giant destroys them as well. There goes the WCW World Title match. Now Taskmaster is cutting off Hogan's hair... Well, the hair he has left. Trainer is now there talking to Hogan.

Main Event: Arn Anderson vs. Ric Flair

This is a rematch from Fall Brawl. They keep wondering where Luger was when Hogan was being attacked. Mongo thinks he was eating a snow cone.

Flair locks on the Figure Four on Arn Anderson in the middle of the ring. Arn looks like he's about to tap, but Pillman interferes and hits a splash on Flair.

Winner by DQ: Ric Flair

Postmatch, Flair and Pillman trade blows, then Arn hits Flair from behind, and the two men gain the upper hand on Flair

Decent match that got a sufficient amount of time. Sets up a future tag team match between these three (and a now unknown) fourth man down the line. **1/2.

Next week on Nitro: Flair vs. Arn Anderson in a cage match. They mention that no interference will happen in a cage match. Yeah, right. Also on the card: Sting vs. Shark, Sabu vs. Mr. JL, and Road Warrior Hawk vs. Big Bubba.

A definite step up from the week prior. The matches were pretty good, and while the DoD stuff is rather silly, it did put over Giant as a monster. Not all bad, right? 7.5/10

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Disco Inferno came out prior to the Guerrero/Malenko match. He dances to his music for a while, before Eddie's music hits the P/A and he tells Inferno to leave. I thought this was going to set up Inferno to interfere in the match, but I was wrong. I'm not unhappy I was wrong, though.

2. Speaking of music, I swear Malenko's theme is a Jimmy Hart Version of Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past's Dark World Theme.

- Dean Malenko's WCW theme

- Zelda: A Link to the Past Dark World Theme.

There is definitely some similiarities there.

3. The Hogan stuff was actually the start of a gimmick where Hogan wore black for a while, and was going to the 'dark side' of Hulkamania. They probably should have done something different with that gimmick. I bet a heel turn would've made millions... Nah. Sides, who would buy Hogan as a heel at that time?

4. Mongo mentioned during the Flair/Anderson match that if you miss Nitro, then that's it. You can always catch that other shows again later. What's funny is that WCW Nitro actually had a replay of their show later on Monday Night for people that missed it. Whoops!

He also called Luger's hand stinky on the very first episode of Nitro, though I cut that out. Is that the only adjective Hogan knows to call his opponents?

At least it isn't poopy <_<.

Other Nitro Notes

1. The Shark hails from Tsunami. At least it isn't WCW Special Forces, The Last House on the Left, Anywhere He Damn Well Pleases, or Parts Unknown.

2. What's worse? Hogan's mustache being shaved off a national travesty, or Hogan's HoF ring gives people special powers?

3. Hogan talked about a certain wrestling promoter in New York with a massive ego, who is now choking on that ego since he left. Speaking of egos, Hogan says that them shaving his mustache is about as bad as putting graffiti on the Washington Monument or burning the American Flag. This had no point whatsoever aside from making Hogan look good. Something Hogan's been doing for 25 years now.

4. From now on I'm going to call all my enemies stinky.

Airdate: October 9th, 1995
Arena/Location: Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Illinois.
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

The commentary team are wearing Chicago Bears jerseys with their names on the back. Mongo is 76, Bischoff is 1, and Heenan is ?. Sting comes to the announce booth and says he'll solve the problem between Savage and Luger later tonight.

Match One: Sting(c) vs. Shark: WCW United States Heavyweight Championship match

Shark hits a few power moves on Sting, but Sting is able to win with a crossbody off the top rope.

Winner by Pinfall, and STILL WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Sting.

Short match that lasted less than three minutes. Only gets 1/2* from me.

Match Two: Sabu vs. Mr. J.L.

Mr. J.L. is wearing a mask, and is also very mysterious. Sabu chant from the crowd. Then a Hogan sucks chant. Good back and forth high flying action here. , Sabu locking on the camel clutch onto JL, making him tap.

Postmatch: Sabu throws JL out of the ring. JL tries to reenter, but Sabu does a sunset flip into a powerbomb.

Winner by submission: Sabu

**1/2 match. It was good for a six minute long match.

Mean Gene in the ring with Sting and Luger. Sting calls for Savage to come out as well. Sting says Giant is winning the game, and I just lost the game. It'll be Luger vs. Savage if they win their matches at Halloween Havoc. (Meng vs. Savage, Luger vs. Kamala)

We cut to outside where a limo is pulling up at the arena. The driver opens the door, revealing Chris Benoit! In a suit! With a mullet! The 90s were a weird time for hairdos.

Disco Inferno is out dancing to his theme song. When his music stops, he gets a Boombox from out of nowhere, which also has his theme song on it. He tries to get Hawk to dance, but Hawk has none of that. Instead he pushes Inferno. Inferno then grabs a hat from the audience and puts it on Hawk's spiked shoulder pads. That was pretty funny.

Match Three: Big Bubba Rogers vs. Road Warrior Hawk

Not much of a match since Inferno gets on the ring apron and starts dancing. Hawk proceeds to rip part of his shirt off then chases him down the ramp. He beats him up, but is counted out.

Winner by count out: Big Bubba Rogers

Less of a match and more of a random showcase of Disco Inferno. N/R.

Mean Gene in the ring again. Hogan (now wearing all black) comes out to boos. Gene states the boos are because of the attire switch. Hogan starts off by telling Mean Gene and Jimmy Hart to shut their mouths. He then proceeds to call out the 'no good stinky' Giant! No longer is he just the stinky Giant! There is a restraining order so Giant can't come inside the arena tonight.

The DoD show up in a Monster Truck, with police behind them. Hogan leaves to go beat them up.. Though we never see this.

Main Event: Ric Flair vs. Arn Anderson in a Cage Match

The cage itself isn't fifteen feet. It's more like seven feet.

Pillman climbed up over the cage and.. Interfered. I thought they said no interference?! Flair threw him off the cage and onto the ground below. Flair's going for the figure four, but Arn hits him with brass knuckles for the win.

Winner by Pinfall: Arn Anderson

Not a very long match, nor was it as good as their previous match. ** From me.

Ric Flair runs up to the announce booth, yanks Bischoff's headset off so hard he breaks it, and says he wants a match against both Pillman and Arn next week.

Not as good as the previous Nitro. The Sabu/JL match was decent, and the Arn/Flair match would've been better with more time. The other two matches were barely matches at all. The Hogan stuff was definitely the low point though. 5/10

Airdate: October 16th, 1995
Arena/Location: Albany Civic Center in Albany, Georgia.
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

We start off Nitro with them recapping WCW Pro where Flair asks Sting to join him against Anderson and Pillman. Sting tells Flair not to 'swerve' him or else Sting’ll leave him for dead. Can’t blame Sting for not trusting Flair.

Match One: Diamond Dallas Page © w/ Diamond Doll (Kimberly Page) vs. Johnny B. Badd for the WCW World Television Championship

Before the match even begins, DDP hits Johnny B. Badd with his Television title. He then pins him and does the 1, 2, 3 himself. The Diamond Doll doesn’t look too happy about it.

Winner by DQ: Johnny B. Badd (DDP Retains)

The match didn’t even start, so N/R. More Kimberly Page, please?

Match Two: Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit

Benoit controlled most of the early match, and worked over Eddie’s right arm. Eddie was able to get a second wind, and looked like he was going to win when he went for the 5 Star Frog Splash, only Benoit reversed it, and was able to get the pin after a full nelson suplex bridge pin..

Winner by pinfall: Chris Benoit

It is the best match Nitro has offered thus far. ***½

Back to the commentary booth, and Bischoff notes that ‘WCW International’ is considering establishing a Cruiserweight division. Obviously one of the best parts about WCW that they could offer was the Cruiserweights.

Back to the ring now as Mean Gene. He hypes up the WCW Hotline, and mentions that a WWF official quit, and that a WWF superstar got beaten up a fan. IIRC, wasn’t that Shawn Michaels getting beat up by several marines? Anyways, Mean Gene interviews the ‘stinky’ Giant and Taskmaster. I swear, every time Taskmaster said evil, I hear the dub guy for Kai En Tai saying “INDEED!” They talk about Hogan, and the monster truck match at Halloween Havoc. I almost want to watch that and review it…. but I might go insane.

Disco Inferno out again, he dances for a few seconds, but it stopped when Meng comes out. Nothing too funny this week.

Match Three: Meng vs. ‘Hackaw’ Jim Duggan

Lots of punches, clotheslines, and a few scoop slams to mix it up. Meng wins with the thumb to Hacksaw’s throat (Spike to those who want an official name)

Winner by submission: Meng

Basically a squash for Meng. ¾*
Backstage interview with Hogan, who’s still wearing his black attire. Hart’s there holding the WCW title. He talks about the ‘evil’ in Hulk Hogan, and that it’s true what Taskmaster has stated about Hogan. He’s just hyping up the PPV here.

Main Event: Arn Anderson & Brian Pillman vs. Sting and Ric Flair

Sting doesn’t show up to start this off, so we have Arn and Pillman vs. Flair to start off. Sting apparently doesn’t fully trust Flair, and everyone is stunned Sting has gotten genre savvy for once.

Flair dominates both men till Arn hits his patented Spinebuster on Flair, which brings out Sting. Flair gets the tag, Sting destroys both men, throws them over the top rope, and neither man can make it back in.

Winners by count out: Sting and Ric Flair

Alright match that set up the PPV match pretty well. **1/4

Mean Gene in the ring interviewing Flair and Sting. Sting says he trusts Flair now. They’ll go against Arn and Pillman at Halloween Havoc!

Next week on Nitro: Sting and Luger vs. Harlem Heat, Benoit and Malenko vs. Eddie Guerrero and.. Alex Wright, plus Hogan’ll be there!

Though the 'Dark Side' Hogan stuff hurts Nitro more than it helps it, the great TV match between Guerrero and Benoit was enough to make this a favorable Nitro. 7/10

Other Nitro Note:

1. Damn, Kimberly Page was by far one of the hottest women in wrestling. DDP was a very lucky man INDEED!

2. Usages of stinky: I decided to keep a running count of how many times Hogan has used stinky (or a variant thereof) in his promos. This week, I caught him saying it four times! He really likes that word!

3. Apparently Flair’s chop is so strong it can knock down the referee.. Five feet away. That’s the second time this has happened in the last few weeks.

4. It’s a little tough to watch a Benoit match again. This is the first one I’ve seen since his final appearance on ECW four years ago. He was always a favorite of mine when I was younger, and watching a match of his again is a double-edged sword. He was a phenomenal athlete, but I’ll never forget what he did to his wife and son.. In the end, I guess I can always try to separate what he did and what he was. Though it’ll be difficult.

As mentioned on the show, they were building a Cruiserweight Division. They kept him under the mask so if they ever decided they wanted to give him a strong run, they could re-debut him without the history of being a jobber.

Airdate: October 16th, 1995
Arena/Location: Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, Alabama
Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

Match One: Randy Savage vs. Kurasawa w/ Col. Rob Parker

Kurasawa was able to control most of this match, as he worked over Savage’s arm. Savage was able to regain control when Kurasawa attempted a spinning back kick on Savage but instead hit the ring post. Savage was able to hit the elbow drop for the win.

Winner by pinfall: Randy Savage

Kurasawa looked good for a while, but about the only move he took from Savage was the elbow drop. Could’ve been much better. **

We’re at the commentary booth when the lights go out. It’s the Undetaker! Wait no..it’s The Master! He’s talking about… Well to be absolutely honest, I have no idea. He’s says something about tigers and Mt. Everest.. I assume it’s about Hogan. There’s also an iceberg there.. No, really.

We then cut to Mean Gene with The ‘stinky’ Giant and The Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan. They look about as confused as I do. Kevin Sullivan says that The Master was able to get The Yeti.. Sullivan says it’s an insurance policy. I wonder what ‘legitimate business’ he gets his insurance from. Giant says that he’ll take Hogan’s last life from him. Then does an evil laugh.

Mean Gene in the ring, as Hogan comes out. He says that everyone knows what a person with black glove and ‘rag’ on his head is capable of.. Wearing black? He yanks off his neck brace He says he’ll destroy Luger, Sting, and Savage since they were hovering around waiting to pick his bones. No stinky, though.

Match Two: Dean Malenko & Chris Benoit vs. Eddie Guerrero & Mr. J.L. w/ Alex Wright

This was supposed to be Malenko and Benoit vs. Guerrero and Alex Wright, but apparently Wright injured his knee (seems to be walking fine on it, though.)

Partway through the match, we get a split screen to the back where Shark and Scott Norton are trading blows. Apparently it stems from the match Shark inadvertently cost Norton a month ago. Took them that long to get to it?

Heenan states that Wright got hurt when he tried to dance like Disco Inferno. I guess that’s why Wright started his goofy dance, then!

J.L. plays Morton here, he gets the hot tag on Guerrero who then gets the upper hand on Malenko and Benoit, J.L. gets the blind tag and is able to pin Malenko when Wright tripped him up with the crutch!

:Postmatch, Guerrero is going up the aisle, celebrating when Pillman randomly attacks him.

Winners by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero and Mr. J.L.

Good match that got just over nine minutes. *** Thought Wright was going to turn heel, but he helped out the faces.

They talk about the block of ice briefly, while Harlem Heat show up, indicating..

Main Event: Harlem Heat w/Sister Sherri vs. Sting and Luger

Luger plays Morton for some reason. Sting finally gets the tag, Stinger splash’s both men, but is thrown out. They attack Luger, but Sting is able to get the pin on Stevie Ray.

Winners by pinfall: Sting and Luger

*¾ from me.

The Giant and Taskmaster comes out. Giant choke slams both Luger and Sting, then Savage comes out. Savage and Giant look like they’re about to go at it, but Hogan comes out. Hogan and Giant no sell each other’s punches, but Hogan Hulks up, attacks Giant, who staggers. The rest of the DoD come out, but Hogan and Savage take them all out. Hogan and Savage is in the ring, when the iceberg explodes. We don’t see what it is as Nitro (continently) goes off the air.

None of the matches were bad but that whole Yeti stuff was just too terrible. It takes this down at least two points. 5/10

Other Nitro Notes:

1. The Yeti. Just The Yeti. According to Bischoff though, it’s The Yetay.

2. If Hogan was going to sell that he was evil, wouldn’t he take off that cross that’s hanging around his neck? It is rather prominent and hurts the selling of this angle.

3. Hogan claimed that Stinger was trying to take his place, since he was wearing Red and Yellow now. Harlem Heat were also wearing Red and Yellow, but they aren’t trying to take Hogan’s place?

4. I’ve been contemplating actually watching Halloween Havoc and reviewing it, but I’m not too sure. What does everyone think? Yay or nay?

Match Five: Meng w/ Kevin Sullivan vs. Lex Luger

Tony theorizes that Luger and the DoD are in cahoots. This is a pretty meh match that got way too much time. Meng hit’s the golden spike on Luger, goes for the three… but Kevin Sullivan kicks Luger, causing the DQ… wtf?

Winner by DQ: Lex Luger

Not a great match, but I guess the story here is that Luger is much more tired going in his match with Savage. ¾*

Match Six: Arn Anderson and Flyin’ Brian vs. Sting and Ric Flair

Flair doesn’t start with this match due to the beat down from Brian and Anderson, so Sting is at it alone. Partway through the match, Flair finally arrives and seems to be on Sting’s side, but turns on Sting!

Winners by DQ: Sting and Flair

Post match, Flair says that the 4 Horsemen are reunited. Though obviously it’s just these three men… for now.

So Flair spent an entire month as face just to troll Sting? Regardless, good match that had a rather obvious ending (obvious in that I knew it was happening >_>) ***¼

Hey it’s Mike Tenay! He’s interviewing Luger. He calls himself the greatest wrestler in WCW… if you discount about three or four hundred people then yeah sure. He was hyping his match with Savage.

More shilling as Heenan and Tony talk about the Sumo Monster Truck match some more Now we have Bischoff and a monster truck expert (Bob something or another) there with Bobby Heenan. Apparently the two trucks are welded together?

'Match' Seven: Hulk Hogan vs. The Giant - Sumo Monster Truck match

Heenan calls it exciting, though I think he's talking about the two women making out in the corner of the arena. Hogan is able to push Giant’s truck out. Ugh.

Winner by.. Pushout?: Hulk Hogan

Post’match’ Giant is angry. Giant is chasing Hogan who is slowly backing up to the edge of the roof. Hulk pushes Giant, and the Giant falls! Hogan runs off yelling for help... For some reason.

Ugh.. This was a terrible idea all around. Really, who thought this was a bright idea? Can I go with -*****? If not, then N/R

Match Eight Randy Savage vs. Lex Luger

Savage wins with an elbow drop after Luger had used the ring ropes for leverage. I thought Luger was the greatest WCW wrestler?

Winner by pinfall: Randy Savage.

Meh, Savage was alright here. *¼

Hogan is out saying what happened in his match against The Giant wasn’t supposed to happen.. Then The Giant comes out as though nothing is wrong with him.

Main Event: Hulk Hogan© w/ Jimmy Hart vs. The Giant w/ The Taskmaster - WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

Giant does pretty well here! It’s a pretty long match that looks as though Hogan is about to win it when Jimmy Hart attacks the referee! Then Hart hits Hogan with the belt, who no sells it. He is choking Hart out when The Giant attacks Hogan from behind.

Giant attacking Hogan as Luger and Savage come out. Savage tries to Help Hogan, but Luger turns heel by helping out the DoD. The Yeti comes out in mummy wrappings.. Wait. Yeti.. Iceberg.. Mummy wrappings. wtf? Now Giant and Yeti are giving a double hum- 'bear hug' to Hogan. After the ‘special’ move Yeti realizes he’s a mummy and starts walking around as a mummy, while Luger applies the Torture Rack to Hogan. Bobby Heenan: “You will never see a PPV like this ever again. You can bet on that.” Yeti and Giant are now ‘bear hugging’ Savage. Jimmy Hart gives The Giant the title, even though he won it by DQ.

Winner by DQ: The Giant

Not a good match. The whole stuff after it was over wasn’t much better. ½*

If you cut out all the Hogan stuff, this may have gotten a 6.5, but with the Hogan stuff, Yeti, Monster Truck crap, it really brings it down. 4/10

Halloween Havoc
Airdate: October 29th, 1995
Arena/Location: Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan
Commentators: Tony Schiavone and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

Anderson and Pillman attacked Flair before the PPV. Gee, I wonder what’s going to happen in that match later tonight.

Match One: Johnny B. Badd vs. Diamond Dallas Page © w/ Maxx Muscle and Diamond Doll - WCW World Television Title Match

Video package of how this match came about. Not bad.

The match they had on Nitro ended in DQ when DDP attacked Badd with the title belt prior to the start of the match.

For some reason, DDP is out first. Badd comes out second.. Wait, that’s a fake Johnny B. Badd. The real one attacks DDP from behind. Did every Halloween Havoc have a someone impersonating a character on it somewhere?

Hey, Heenan said stinky! I don’t think that counts, though..

The main story during the match is that the Diamond Doll isn’t too happy with how DDP has been acting lately. End came when DDP was holding onto Badd, and DDP gets clotheslined by Maxx Muscle. Badd rolls up DDP for the win.

Winner, and NEW WCW World Television Champion: Johnny B. Badd

Postmatch, Diamond Doll is happy to see Badd win.

Good way to start off the PPV. Both guys did well here, and the crowded was on fire when Badd won. ***

Schiavone recaps the Hogan/Giant feud. He notes that this will be the Giant’s first official match in WCW. Well I guess the Sumo Truck match is the first, while his second match is for the title. That’s pretty damn crazy.

Match two: Zodiac vs. Randy Savage

Where is Zodiac from? The Land of Yin and Yang. This was supposed to be Savage vs. Kamala, but Kamala left days before the PPV itself.

This match went only a minute and a half. The most notable thing here is that a random fan got in the ring, but was subdued by the ref. That was always a pretty big problem in WCW. Savage wins with an elbow drop.

Winner by pinfall: Randy Savage

Not much of a match, so not much of a rating. ¼*

Video package of Kurasawa ‘breaking’ Road Warrior Hawk’s arm.

Match Three: Kurasawa w/ Col. Rob Parker vs. Road Warrior Hawk

Hawk had the upper hand during most of the match, and even took out Col. Rob Parker at one point, but Kurasawa was able to get the win when he had his legs on the ropes.

Winner by pinfall: Kurasawa

*. Lots of punching, clotheslines, and scoops slams from Hawk, but that was about it.

Mean Gene with Macho Man. Savage talking about his match, and Hogan.. He blurts out that Mean Gene’s mustache is crooked o_O. Savage then admits to being very curious about the machine vs. machine match.

Match Four: Mr. J.L. vs. Sabu w/ The Original Sheik

J.L. is very mysterious. Who knew? Sheik’s original stomping grounds was the Michigan area, so he gets a pretty good pop.

Decent high flying action here, that Sabu was able to win. Postmatch, The Sheik threw a fireball at Mr. JL. At least he didn’t throw the fireball at himself. Hey, Tony used vintage! Vintage vintage!

Winner by pinfall: Sabu

Bout the same as their Nitro match a few weeks back. **½.

We go to The Master and The Taskmaster. Oh god, The Master is talking. He yells for a while, and I’m not 100% sure he knows what he’s talking about. Sullivan says Hogan is evil.

Hey, Tony pronounces Yeti Yetay as well.

Commentators: Steve 'Mongo' McMichael, Pepe, Eric Bischoff, and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan

We start off Nitro with Bischoff calling Halloween Havoc as shocking. I’d have a few different adjectives. Terrible, horrible.. Stinky. Anyways, let’s get to our first match!

Match One: Sgt. Craig “Pitbull” Pittman vs. Eddie Guerrero.

During the preshow of Halloween Havoc, Sgt. Pittman beat V.K. Wallstreet. That’s nice. This was supposed to be Pittman vs. Savage, but Savage couldn’t make it due to ‘injuries’ he had at the PPV. I guess being humped by a mummy would injury my psych, so let’s go with that.

Pittman is able to control most of this match, but Eddie picks up the win with a reversal into a rollup.

Winner by pinfall: Eddie Guerrero

Pittman isn’t a half bad wrestler, though obvious he‘s nowhere near the league of Guerrero, and isn‘t as good of a match here. . It’s apparent that management liked Guerrero though, since he’s been getting quite a few wins lately. **

Match Two: Scott Norton vs. Shark

We get a review of what happened back on September 11th when Shark unintentionally helped Savage beat Norton. Also, Heenan left the announce booth during the break, unfortunately. He appears with Sonny Onoo, which also happened at Halloween Havoc. Match ends with a double countout.

No Contest through double countout

Both men keep beating each other post match.

Eh, nothing spectacular. ½*

Back to Onoo and Heenan, as Onoo hands Heenan an envelope filled with money.

Tony Schiavone in the ring. He talks about the tag team match the night before between Flair and Sting vs. Arn and Pillman where Flair turned on Sting. The new Horsemen come out. Each one spends a few minutes talking about Sting.

Match Three: Sabu vs. Disco Inferno

Before this match starts, Bischoff notes that the next Nitro will be an interactive Nitro. Apparently the fans will make the card. Sure they will.

I admit it’s highly unusual to see one of the hardcore legends going against Disco Inferno. The match itself isn’t all bad. Sabut picks up the win after a leg drop from the apron and over the top rope.

Winner by pinfall: Sabu

Postmatch, Sabu puts Inferno on a table, and Inferno gets out of the way and Sabu crashes on the table.. But the table doesn’t break. Sabu looks pissed as he throws the table, picks up the stairs and throws them as well.

Match itself could’ve had more time, but it wasn’t bad for what we saw. *½

Main Event: Luger and Meng w/ Jimmy Hart and Kevin Sullican vs. American Males (Scotty Riggs and Marcus Bagwell)

Apparently, American Males lost their belts, as they don’t come out with the titles. Hmm. Riggs plays the role of Ricky Morton here. Bagwell comes in and dominates Luger. Hart distracts the ref , Meng takes advantage, and Luger wins this one.

Winners by submission: Lex Luger and Meng

Not a very good match. * from me.

Postmatch, we go to the announce booth as McMichael annoys both Heenan and Bischoff. He sprays silly string and Heenan. We then get a recap of Hogan’s match at Halloween Havoc. They show the Yeti (Yetay) coming out and the double hump of doom.

Back in the ring, Tony is interviewing DoD. Giant is wearing the belt. Jimmy Hart says he’ll explain his actions next week. Each man talks about what they the night before. Giant says he’ll defend his belt next week against anyone.

Ugh. Not a good Nitro. About the best part was the Guerrero/PIttman match, but that only got five minutes, and The Horsemen promo, but overall it was a poor show. 4/10

Other Nitro Notes:

1. Bischoff, the great announcer he is, called Sgt. Craig Pittman ‘Pimple’ a few times.

2. For some reason or another, they didn’t want to give away what happened at the PPV the night before at the start of the show. They mentioned that the Giant left with the belt, but not how or why. Was it to keep everyone from switching to Raw? If so, then it’s not a terrible idea, but why not keep all the information for later in the show?

3. When the table spot botches, Bischoff stated that Sabu was overacting.. Dude could have broken his back. I would be more than a little mad when the table that was supposed to break doesn’t.
