As in, right before the CPU reached a crucial point, such as a Star or a Boo, you would pause the game and take control of them for that moment, so that they would deny the Star, make sure the Boo didn't target your player, and so on.

I barely enjoyed Mario Party even with other people, I would never subject myself to playing it alone.

but also every word of this. mario party is what we'd play when people got sick of losing to me in madden or perfect dark or mario kart.

No, we'd only do that as kids if me and my family were playing and set the Cpu too hard or otherwise were unlucky enough for the cpu to get some great advantage or whatever.

I didn't play much mario party alone though.

Actually, now that I think about it, I do remember at some point reading about the "trick" of switching all the CPUs to human players on the last turn of the game, so that after the game was over you would collect all of the coins/stars the CPUs had gathered.

But this was years after I'd basically finished my time with MP1, so I never put this to use.

I did this trick a lot just to unlock everything quickly.

Pretty much the least time consuming way to get Stars and Coins since you can tell the game to skip CPUs playing mini-games. I remember occasionally watching the CPUs play and swapping controls so I didn't have them waste coins on boos.
