Video games died in the PS3 / 360 era.

Ive been ranting about this for probably six years now.

Yeah they really need to figure out how to get games out quicker.

Like it's nuts that God of War Ragnarok and Spider-man 2 took half a decade. They're great games but they play like a sequel that used to take 1-2 years.

But then it also sucks because even as is these studios have to deal with inflated budgets and crunch.

No idea what the solution is. Will there even be one?

The only thing that is going to save the gaming industry is virtual reality.

Well, what has changed? Every game and its mother still has to be open world like it's the brand spanking newest thing in the universe. Everything still has to be an RPG. We still use exactly the same control schemes, even. The graphics are exactly the same just with thirty times the polygons that you can't actually see.

4k support. Wow. Amazing stuff. Totally the future.

I guess the other thing is home VR. Which in three years will be wherever 3DTVs are.

The only real changes in the last decade and a half have been shit getting worse. Free to play, pay to win, gatcha, "time saver" DLC...

Funny thing is they tried, about a decade ago, then they stopped trying. 2015's Batman Arkham Knight is literally still the game of the future.

It seems like everyone is too afraid to make fully next gen games at this point. You could have a ps4 and still not miss out on the majority of games released 4 years into the PS5 gen. Thats ridiculous.

The console was literally out for like two years before it was actually accessible to most people.

That's tied to the same thing really.

It takes 5-7 years to make a AAA game. Devkits are given 1-2 year before release. So a game that started development in 2019 with PS5 devkits day one would only be coming out now. But then obviously the pandemic would have disrupted everything in 2020 so that would have added more time.

The other thing of course is that these games need like 10+ million to sell. AAA games have a 10-20% console attach rate at most. So they really need to wait until the 50 million mark to actually make a return on proper next gen games.

Meanwhile the Nintendo Switch will be selling like hotcakes for the next 10 years. Holographic games will be a reality and Nintendo will still be selling the hell out of the Switch with its 2017 hardware. Lol Sony, get on that level.

The supply issues are no longer a thing, yet nothing has changed. Games also have to be made in advance, so the fact that PS5s were hard to find has absolutely nothing to do with games not being released exclusively for it.

Do you think studios just suddenly whipped up ps4 ports because it was hard to find? The same things applies to games releasing on the last gen xboxes, and i dont think there were supply issues there.

yeah, fair. The death of smaller budget AA games also really hurts.

what has to change? Gens are defined by hardware. Games dont have to reinvent the wheel every year. Helldivers 2 is basically a PS3-era co-op shooter and everyone loves it and its selling well.

The gaming studios knew about the supply issues with PS5.

Why would you develop a game for a console that nobody has?

Answer: you dont.

Thats why the studios focused on PS4 because they know everybody actually had it and thus will actually PURCHASE the game.

Them not having the big third party games was seen as a major issue for them for the GameCube, Wii and Wii U. Now barely anyone talks about that and the third party games barely seem to matter.

A lot of younger gamers today grew up in a time in which the typical 3rd party game that is released on every single console and also the PC were really mediocre or outright bad experiences on the wii, wii u, and the switch. For this age group, they are playing on nintendo consoles for mario, mario kart, zelda, splatoon, and animal crossing. It actually makes sense for this group not giving a damn if like red dead redemption 2, fifa or madden games, or whatever is the current bigger budget upcoming game releases passes over the switch.

For us older people who been around when nintendo actually did have a ton of 3rd party support on the NES, SNES, and did a bit better on the gamecube, well, we just got used to not even thinking about/expecting a nintendo platform to get...*checks upcoming AAA release that is shared on the consoles with more capable hardware and the PC* WWE 2K24 since we had coming up to 2 decades of knowing that nintendo does not compete with power for their consoles anymore and is only really concerned about whatever they are trying to do.

Like for GTA6, our minds just automatically default to the playstation and xbox, or playing it on the PC at a later date. Imo this isn't nothing new.......majority of gamers out there has been had this "you get a nintendo console and the switch to play nintendo games. If a good 3rd party game port shows up for portable play on the switch, neat. If not, that is what the playstation, xbox, or PC is for" mentality.

(Including me. I got a switch, but its only used for nintendo games that can't be gotten nowhere else. Also some indies that I want to play while laying in bed. Thats.....pretty much it and what I expected).

That was the case long before the Switch. It also isn't all that relevant unless you have a gaming PC which also has no major exclusives nowadays compared to a couple of decades ago.

The Wii U was caught in this weird place in which it's gimmick with the gamepad legit sucked but was too underpowered to run 3rd party games as well as the PS4 n' xbone, and barely better than the 360 and PS3. Along with nintendo's own games aside from like smash 4 and mario kart 8 not doing well so the 3rd party thing actually did suck a whole lot more for the Wii U. At least with some Wii 3rd party games like resident evil 4 it made real great use out of the wiimote. No one could really do anything with the gamepad in comparison.

I think a lot of is also because the internet has a tendency to ride on the stuff doing well and dogpile on negativity or failures.

If the Switch 2 disappoints and people don't want to buy it I'm sure it would matter again.

I suppose another difference is it's not just a home console anymore too. So there's a level of understanding that 3rd party support won't be there compared to before.

I think people finally just accepted that Nintendo is just not gonna have great third party support any more than McDonald's is gonna serve Thai food. Sure, Cheesecake Factory serves Thai food. But if you go on the Internet and blog angrily about how McDonald's doesn't have Thai food, everyone's going to think you're an idiot for having not already known this.
