It seems like James Gunn will understand the assignment too.

I think today's world needs a more traditional take on Superman now more than ever.

Apart from the fundamental flaw of its premise, as you mentioned, my other big problem with Injustice is that Superman constantly gets his entire ass kicked. Wonder Woman fucks him up, Hawkman fucks him up, the Lanterns fuck him up, Black Canary fucks him up, hell even Alfred fucks him up.

We're led to believe that a Lawful Evil Superman would be the end of the world, but really the only reason he was a threat at all is because the plot required him to constantly get rescued by OOC JL members, or spared by the people who obliterate him in battle. Honestly, he should have kept his Yellow Ring and stayed overpowered as fuck. Maybe then I'd buy him as a universal threat, but nah, they put him back in regular Superman mode and let his ass get kicked like four more times before the ending. His design as a Yellow Lantern was also immaculate.

Injustice isn't supposed to be 1:1 with the regular DC universe until "Joker kills Lois, then Superman goes murder-happy." It was already slightly different before that. Case in point, Wonder Woman never had a friendship with Steve Trevor to ground her so she's always barely a push away from going Injustice-y in that universe.

Basically....Injustice Superman was never our Superman, he was already different. Our Superman would never become an Injustice Superman.

I heard that recently in the comics, Jon Kent (Supermans son and current actual acting Superman) visited the Injustice universe and fought his alternate universe corrupted father

But I don't know all the details

Personally I'm a fan of Siegel's "troll with a heart of gold" Superman

The only Superman comic I've read is Red Son, which I thought was a pretty ingenious """evil""" Superman story

Its almost like the premise was written in 5 minutes so they could have a Mortal Kombat style DC video game

The game was so popular that it became a whole series of comics that ran for a pretty long time. There are over a hundred issues of it, and they tell the story of how the world got to be the way it was in the game, rather than the story of the game itself. At least, the series I read was like that. There's also a series that tells the story of the game, but with Harley Quinn as the narrator, which...was certainly a choice.

This and Emperor Joker showed exactly why neither Joker nor anyone could turn Superman evil to "deconstruct" him and those were written within a decade before Injustice was ever a thing.

Honestly the big issue with Injustice I think isn't just that it made Superman evil and was essentially the jumpstart of Evil Superman as the default in the public eye, it's that it comes off across as a Batwank story. I already had issues with so many Batman characters occupying the roster in the original game considering this was suppose to be a Justice League story and Batman in particular is just absolved of all responsibility and guilty seeing as it was his villain that started all this.

The tie-in comics try to at least curb all of this by correctly blaming Batman for what happened but that's because it was clear a different writing team with a different mindset was handling that. Also, the whole Harley Quinn thing. Despite the fact that she had a hand in Lois' death, they never address that nor does she ever actually change her ways. She just trots along as normal and no one ever calls her out

Then Injustice 2 happened, and I just noped out of this whole thing. If you make Superman not only unrepentantly evil but choosing him as the bad ending, yeah, I want nothing to do with your story ever again

Evil Superman is just made so batman looks good. Batman can never be seen as wrong.

Also I'm really happy Injustice died before Batman Who Laughs came around, that would have been a fucking nightmare.

Yeah it was trying real hard to be a Marvel Civil War kind of story, but what worked in the movie was that you can at least see both sides of Ironman vs. Captain America. Injustice was essentially Superman evil, Batman good.

DC just can't help itself with an evil Superman story. Almost everything they touch with Superman includes him turning antagonistic for some reason or another.

I always find it strange when people feel so strongly about evil superman stories. I get it if you think the idea is stale or overused or whatever, but when people act like somebody has actively disrespected them by making one, it comes across as very odd.

I do feel that the real villain of Injustice is Wonder Woman, and that she capitalised on Supermans grief and turned him into what he became

I mean, there are definitely people who think Superman was doing the right thing initially. The whole "no more guns, no more warlords," etc. sounds like what a lot of people would unironically want to happen.

Wasn't it a great saga when he got the goddess of the omniverse to help him out and rearrange the world, had some evil batmen like a dinosaur batman and a batman whose consciousness was inside a castle helped transplant his brain into the dead body of a Bruce Wayne who became like Doctor Manhattan, where he then gained all the powers Doctor Manhattan has, promptly killing the goddess so he could recreate the whole omniverse in his image, and then after wasting time in Crisis of Infinite Earths, Infinity Crisis, and Final Crisis, Wonder Woman punched him into the sun while the observers of the omniverse watched, which somehow killed him.
These are all things that happened.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, having an "evil, alt universe" Justice League is probably the best way to explain why the Justice League are beating the shit out of each other in a fighting game. >_>

Tbh, I wouldn't have a problem if somebody made Batman the "evil" one instead. He's the one with detailed plans on how to stop the entire Justice League so it's more interesting than just evil alien God man who can't be stopped.

It just feels boring and overdone IMO. And it doesn't really play to Superman's strengths as a character. "Evil" Superman is basically just every other nigh invulnerable villain in comics.

I don't mind characters like Homelander, who are more like a deconstruction of Superman and not just evil Superman for the sake of edge.

This sounds like someone who's never played or seen any Mortal Kombat games beyond Fatality montages on YouTube.

The people who write the Mortal Kombat stories are not the same people who write Injustice. The heroes and villians are clear-cut and the former often preach and practice being better by using reason or sparing their adversaries. Scorpion, the franchise's poster boy edgelord, has especially seen significant growth throughout the NRS trilogy, going from obsessed with revenge above all else to practically being brothers with the people he once falsely accused and regretting his past transgressions. His literal dying wish to his past self is to let go and be a better person.

Fujin in particular became a lot of people's favorite in MK11. After being a particularly flat character for most of his existence, 11 reintroduces him as probably one of the most human deities seen in a very long time. Instead of looking over mortals from up high, he lives with them and connects with them on a personal level to the point you forget what he is. He relates, he quips, he smiles. The guy could easily be your best friend and as a result he's far more of a Superman counterpart than Raiden.

Mortal Kombat was also one of the first fighting games to have an open gay character with Kung Jin in X. When Kung Jin is offered a place in the Shaolin by Raiden, Jin doesn't think he'd be allowed because of his sexuality. Raiden cuts him off and tells him absolutely none of that matters. No insults or belittling, it was one of the most heartwarming and progressive scenes in a video game, and it's in Mortal Kombat no less.

But the people who come up with the fatalities definitely got some psychopath shit going on. They made the animators look at a bunch of pictures and videos of people getting killed in gruesome ways

I am definitely not looking forward to when Batman who Laughs is adapted into stories. It's the most cringe-inducing, 9-year-old's idea of cool, pure Batwank one could ever find.

And it still doesn't try to deconstruct Batman in any way like Evil Superman just love to do.

And despite having total control of the Sands of Time and personally erasing Shang Tsung from existence in Aftermath, Liu Kang still has him exist in the new universe he personally hand crafted despite knowing full well that he's probably one of the most persistent and in some ways dangerous threats to the various realms?
