It's something that dawned on me recently when I was stuck on a hot Florida roof doing some shingle work. I had to lie down for long periods to get tricky spots that were tucked under another section of roof - pretty much every surface (even a cloth fabric cushion) starts to feel like a stovetop after it's been sitting in that kind of sunlight for a few minutes. Pavement would be so much worse.

I've kinda grown to disagree on this idea.
Arizona, Nevada, etc. Have really good water usage laws when it comes to residential water usage. 75% of water usage is due to agriculture*, alfalfa and cotton, that are sold outside the US. So definitely blame the government and people on allowing that. But residents themselves, use very good water conservation
And they're going to run out of water regardless.

Dude... it seems to be rising more sharply than the population when you see that yours starts in the 1910s and his starts in the 70s. Yes, population increase plays a factor in a lot of this climate change stuff, but this just feels like branch in a talking tree. Why you gotta be like that?

Note how in the timeframe posted the number of people experiencing heat related death has risen near-exponentially while the population has increased linearly

Thank God I live near the Great Lakes and in an area that isnt desert.

Several states will be borderline uninhabitable by the time Im retired...okay by the time I am at what the retirement age was when retirement was still a concept that existed for those not ultra rich.

If the pavement's getting that hot (and I have no doubt it is), you can probably get burned just by falling down on the road in bare skin / thin clothing and not getting up fast enough.

Think about how much it stings when you touch a metal surface that's been sitting out in a normal amount of summer sunlight, and you'll have a better idea of how dangerous surfaces can be in the heatwave-addled South.

yeah I was wondering more about the deaths than the burns. I lived in Arizona for a few months but that was almost 20 years ago now so the average temps were probably much lower

I've walked on pavement barefoot before when it was 100 degrees outside and sunny. I can tell you that pavement can get really hot. I found myself frequently walking fast on it and onto any grassy area nearby to give my feet a break before walking back onto the pavement. I definitely wouldn't walk on it if that pavement was any hotter.

If I had to guess, they stepped on the pavement, their feet gave out from being intensely burned, now they're lying down on the pavement, and... well, you can probably imagine the rest.

I took the garbage out last week barefoot in 95 degree heat. I made it to the dumpster fine but literally ran back inside because my feet were starting to burn.

Where I live (Portland Oregon) hit a record 116 degrees 2 years ago. It was pretty miserable. Restaurants had to close because they didnt have ac in their kitchens.

Alternately, they're already suffering from heat exhaustion, and the scalding pavement is the final nail in the coffin. My immediate thought was someone with car trouble stranded on the side of the road.
