I think that's where the party's goals differing from the constituency come into play (the people they want to promote end up being seasoned politicians rather than fresh-faced, radical thinkers).

This all happens way earlier than the general elections - where the parties are already locked in. You need to do this during primaries. Which young people RARELY ever participate in or remember are happening.

I don't blame them because it feels like infighting and a lack of cohesion. Plus it can just set you up for being disgruntled earlier than the generals (your guy didn't get through the primary so now you hate everyone in the general).

He was also the only one under 65.

Which, really, is the weight we bear for continuing to insist on making the two-party dynamic such a big deal. The party is more interested in keeping power than doing right and they want candidates who won't rock the boat TOO much but can present a compelling candidate against "the other guy." Candidate nomination has become a soulless science and one that doesn't care what you want, you will TAKE what you are given by the party.

If you want to vote for candidates who stand for what you believe in then you need to tear this down because then the cream that rises to the top actually has a varying and diverse political spectrum that covers a lot of different solutions for leadership and one where the party doesn't wield all the power of selection.
