Not surprised you never beat it. It has 103 levels. A portion of them are side levels not part of the main route. They can either be shortcuts or add to the game.

It's one of the first games I got on the Genesis as a kid and played the hell out of it. Id use a Game Genie to get to the later levels and beat the final boss.

Here's a roadmap of the levels.

I never owned it at the time but my brothers and I rented it a few times. Now I have several copies of it from the various Sega Genesis collections and "other" means. It's a really fun game. I'm surprised it never generated a follow-up.

Was gonna say it's a Genesis staple...

Also that was Mark Cerny's (guy who was the PS Vita and PS5's lead designer) first 32-bit game he ever programmed.

Nah, you just leave the system running and turn the tv off. Come back to it later after you get home from visiting your grandparents.

Only child my man. lol
Though my friend and I did that with N64 games we rented cause we didn't have a memory card. His little brother would try to race up to his room and turn off the game but my friend caught him in time and beat him down.

I have it on a couple of compilations, but never put much time into it. The gameplay felt a little too basic. It wasn't exactly a visual masterpiece either.

I understand it has a ton of levels. Maybe they should have gone for quality over quantity. I understand somebody having nostalgia for it if they played it when they were young -- it's how I feel about Kung Fu on NES and Altered Beast for Genesis -- but it isn't very inviting for someone who has seen the best of what that generation has to offer and is forced to backtrack. If I'm going to sink a ton of time into a pre-Sonic release, it's gonna be Strider.

Yea. I never liked it. That and Chakan: The Forever Man. Those games were just too out there for me at the time. Creative though.

I think AVGN reviewed Kid Chameleon actually or Mike Matei played it looked like it was frustrating especially later on.

This game always got me. The presentation looks amazing but the gameplay is janky and frustrating. Recently, someone developed a patch to adjust some of the gameplay mechanics and jank. Now it's the go to method of playing the game and makes it fun to play.

Hah I don't know why I remember that dumb game. Apologies for bringing up an even lesser known game, but not a fan of either lmao

Thanks for the new info.

Isle of the Lion Lord.

I watched all of that play video. James got stuck too long on that lava level, some of it as he said his own fault because he wasn't patient enough.

I did that once when I had to leave for a few hours and couldn't get to a save point. I don't remember exactly what happened but it wiped out all the Earthbound saves when the console was turned off somehow.

Sounds like some power surge happened and messed with the console/battery within the game cart. Those consoles are simple and don't have a boot up/shutdown process so you can just cut power to them without issue generally.
