Funnily enough, their next manga, Bakuman, ends with them making a manga that's a lot like Death Note and what they did with that manga was exactly like a bit "fuck you" to the industry that forced them to continue on. They ended up getting the manga to end exactly when they wanted and thus was cemented as a GOAT since it ended on a high note. The slice of life/fanservice stuff stays about as good (maybe even gets better) in the later seasons, but the main plot goes pretty far off the rails.
