How solid was the source from Square that Rinoa =/= Ultimecia? Because I've seen a bunch of references to the theory in ancillary games that are definitely intentional.

Square is aware of the theory, so they can poke fun at it. The Ultimania confirms it isn't real.

People misunderstood the idea that sorceresses can't die without passing on their powers, as if that makes them immortal. Sorceresses have normal lifespans. They'll involuntarily pass on their powers if they're on the verge of death (see Ultimecia in the ending).

Is that actually confirmed anywhere in canon, or is it something Square said later on?

Once again, it's in the Ultimania.

I still prefer the Squall died in disc 1's end cutscene theory.

That theory sucks and the more I try to understand it the less sense it makes.

No, that whole trope is hacky and as a theory it's unfalsifiable.

The R = U theory at least saves Ultimecia from being a random bad guy; I don't understand the appeal of this one at all.

Thanks. Is Ultimania also the origin of the "FFVII and FFX take place on different planets and FFX people went to the FFVII planet through space" theory, or is that somewhere else?

I thought canon is Ultimecia is the AI from Junction Machine Ellone, persecuted due to the prediction that it would turn against its creators.

I think that just comes from an NPC in FFX named Shinra, who wants to start an energy company? It might be confirmed elsewhere but that NPC was the start of it.

I feel like it was something mentioned in an interview, so I don't think it's officially canon.

Also I don't know why Ultimecia needs to be more than what she is.

I have literally never heard this before and it makes zero sense with the actual story. She was persecuted for being a sorceress, like they seemingly had been throughout history.

Alright, I may have just heard it as a crackpot theory before. There are themes in her story and the game's story in general about self-fulfilling prophecy but the AI thing is a major stretch.

I mean, Necron is worse, but do you see silly shit like Garland = Necron coming out of that fanbase?

Necron is not the central antagonist so I don't like that comparison.

I do think ultimecia is established enough anyway. People act like it's a surprise reveal but Edea being evil already needed answers.

Seabass is currently playing FF9 for first time btw, he's on disc 2.

But to address your point, Soulcage = Necron is a theory that I've heard from the fanbase before... though not nearly as much as R=U for sure

Ultimecia is the best for the Deling Speech alone. The correctly translated one.

Also the Dissidia timestop.

There are also people who are proponents of Necron is the embodiment of the Iifa Tree, which is a similar concept.

I mean, she's a future sorceress trying to stop her fated demise. I think that's plenty enough for someone who's the secondary conflict of the game.
