Saw a trend of something to go with Jeff Beck and I assumed it had to do with Jimmy dying.

Huh

Unless you've been living under a rock since the mid 60s you should know who Page is. He's one of the most famous people from the 20th century

My favorite band is Pink Floyd but I wouldn't expect everyone to know David Gilmore. I wouldn't even expect you to know the other members of Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is on another level of famous from most rock stars, he's in the Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Ozzy, etc. level of famous.

yeah I love to make fun of old rockers, but Jimmy Page is pretty damn well known

this all definitely seems subjective. as a huge Zappa fan, I'd say Jimmy Page is arguably more well-known - Zappa just has the 'oh I kinda know that weird name' recognition. so I mildly disagree with some of MrMelo's assessment. Hendrix is easily the most recognizable listed there, with Santana and Clapton probably jockeying for second. I'd put Page around them in regards to recognition, maybe a teeeensy bit below.

As far as what Muscles said, I kinda agree. Definitely around the same level of name recognition as Ozzy, but not quite as much as Michael Jackson.

I could see people getting a few of the Led Zeppelin names mixed up, but people know Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones quite well, JPJ a bit less so. Kinda like how the average person knows some Beatles names but would probably mix them up a little bit.

Led Zeppelin is absolutely not on the same level of name recognition as the Beatles.

as someone who just listens to classic rock every now and then but doesn't look deeper, I've never actually seen a song attributed to Jimmy Page himself. Hendrix, Zappa, Santana, Clapton I can associate songs with because their big songs actually credit them in the band name; i've never seen Jimmy Page credited on the radio or youtube or wherever, just Led Zeppelin. my parents probably raved about him at some point but they rant about every famous guitarist or singer from their high school years

can't argue with the beatles being even more ingrained in pop culture. still, even the suggestion that your parents have ranted about him lines up with my experience that most people in that generation are quite familiar with Led Zeppelin and consider them quite a cultural monolith. I've personally seen and heard quite a bit of talk about Jimmy Page on the radio/youtube. the classic rock station I grew up with definitely talked about him. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant are huge, and them selling tickets for their 'reunion' show was huge. maybe the town I grew up in is full of a bunch of boomer classic rock nerds \_()_/

and tbh when I played The Beatles at work (McDonald's) through my early 20s, people reacted way more with 'wtf is this' in contrast to Zeppelin. idk. just my experience. legit people were obsessed with bands like Led Zeppelin and The Doors in my highschool. in the 2000s. there was graffiti in the bathrooms about Jim Morrison being 'the best poet' of our lives.

Except he's not. At all. He wouldn't even be in the top 100 most famous people from the 20th century. You know who would be? World leaders and heads of state -- ranging from Bill Clinton to Hitler. And you could fill up 100 with just them. Not fair? Okay, let's move to celebrities -- no, let's move to musicians. Is Page more famous than either Elvis, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, and... well, the list goes around the block again and again.

Have a lot of AMERICANS heard of Led Zeppelin? Sure, but most Americans couldn't name one guy in the band. I sure as shit couldn't.
