Everytime a unique idea becomes a show and then is canceled after season 1, it spreads distrust to the customers.

They do this over and over. People don't even want to invest themselves in a new netflix show anymore because of this. Netflix now has the reputation of making hundreds of season 1 shows that end on never resolved cliffhangers

I'm sure some people have unsubscribed because of this. Why do the members of the Netflix boardroom not get this?

This is exactly why I don't watch shows unless it has more than one season

The problem is Netflix makes too much stuff and their costs are way too high.

I watch a lot on Netflix and only once have had something I am into cancel after one season. I guess I just don't watch niche stuff. I was scared about Sandman for awhile there though.

Most corporations don't care at all about customers. From what I remember reading, new seasons of shows gradually cost them more money, and that's pretty much the only thing that matters to the people making decisions.

Probably, but they don't really know how to deal with it. They're just pushing buttons as numbers go clicketty-clack on a computer.

They can deal with it by not always being so quick to cancel. Not every show hits its stride in season 1.

One of the most famous examples is Star Trek The Next Generation. Most people say it is not good til later seasons. Most people hate the first season
Imagine if TNG had been canceled after 1 season.

And Dark was one of the biggest shows in Netflix history. That studio deserves better trust than this. 1899 could have been a huge thing by season 3

I feel like with today's environment, if it doesn't catch on with season 1, it likely never will.

It is pretty easy to understand why they do this even if it sucks.

They need to simply make less shows so that they can retain more.

It makes no sense to me. A lot of shows don't really pick up steam until years later, when people are able to stumble upon the series and watch the whole thing. It's literally one of the big appeals of Netflix, and it's also why syndication has always been a thing. If they'd just do a minimum of 4-5 seasons then these shows could endure way past their actual lifespan, but cancelling them after a season or two means no one will ever be interested in these shows again.

Licensing is expensive. And, being the first major streaming service, it has a lot of older subscribers who didn't move on to other services, won't cancel, and don't care about hot new shows to begin with.

Clone Wars didnt get good until season 3. Was consistently great by season 5. But thats the danger of streaming content, especially with Netflix. Actors typically get signed 1 Season at a time with no renewal until after the season airs. And by the time they try to get signed again the actors moved on because theyre not trying to wait however many months to potentially get an offer on the table to continue.

They still are by a wide margin. Well, maybe not "wide" but...

Netflix - 223 million
Prime - 200 million
Disney+ - 164 million

They absolutely are in terms of subscribers. Netflix has almost 200 million while Disney and hbo have 70-75 million each. Quality is irrelevant with numbers like that.

They either have to pay for license to play a show/movie, or pay to make one. Everything in Netflix costs the company money in some way, and judging by the amount of content that's going to be a MASSIVE amount of money.

They need to recoup that cost and remain profitable as well. So the content needs to be drawing in lots of views, to keep the subscriptions up, and draw in new viewers. If a show has potential, but few viewers, it's just a waste of money to the company. They really shouldn't just gamble on a show becoming popular later and eat the loss now.

Then again, Netflix is dumb in general. So it's hard to say whether it's an actual financial decision, or them throwing darts to decide what shows get which treatment.

It was such a great show, it had a solid run so i'm not as upset but it still sucks. Mindhunter, GLOW, The Get Down, and Altered Carbon were all pretty awful cancellation decisions also. I'm sure there are many more i'm not thinking of.
