Nearly impossible for me to rank stuff that way. But Depeche Mode has always been right up near the top (though I've kind of lost interest for their last few albums). And Erasure was up there as well for a while.

And one of my really off the wall picks for top band ever is Johnny Hates Jazz.

no particular order:

Animal Collective
Radiohead
Swans
Deafheaven
Death Grips

it changes constantly though and bands likely to rotate in at any given time are: The National, The Velvet Underground, Black Flag, Converge, Bauhaus, The Microphones, Big Thief, Run the Jewels, Broadcast, Stereolab, Cocteau Twins, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Plaents, and probably others Im not thinking of at the moment. If it was extended to solo musicians as well Id have a much harder time mulling over this list as Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, Aphex Twin, Bjrk, Amon Tobin, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Caribou/Daphni, Mount Eerie, Kendrick Lamar, Killer Mike, Little Simz, J Dilla, Taylor Swift, MF DOOM, and probably others Im not thinking of would all be contenders.

Eh Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold stand about everything else I'm really not sure what else to add since all other bands are on a similar level.

I am curious though I saw someone else mention Trapt, I didn't know they had any songs but Headstrong worth listening to in all honesty.

Thats amazing, Ive liked both bands forever but never saw either live in person. And before Bob 2 clocked out too. The only dig against DEVO I can level is that for the past few tours they pretty much stick with the hits (minus the charity run for Bob 2s family). Id really love them to break out more of Oh No or Duty Now. At this point though theyre pretty much done.

edit- Alan was a machine. Easily one of the best drummers Ive ever heard. Super underrated.

Yeah I was really lucky. Although I have big regrets about missing their initial post Bob 2 tour where they played all their old old stuff...I'd also be a huge fan of seeing a bunch of Oh No material. I'm pretty sure they played Peek-A-Boo! though!

I've seen Claypool that once, and Primus later that year...interestingly enough, the tour where they had reunited with Jay Lane - pre Green Naugahyde (just after their '2010 rehearsal' EP). I looove Green Naugahyde but it was really cool to see a show that was all across their early catalogue.

Les is a huge reason why I wanted to play bass.I saw Jerry was a Racecar Driver on Headbangers Ball in 91 or 92 and Ricky Rackman didnt know how to introduce them. Just the most bizarre stuff (Gus!) Im incredibly happy they got the recognition they deserve, even if it took a billion years. At least now most people have heard of them even if they dont like the music.

That being said Im not a super huge fan of his solo stuff. I know, I know, Ill probably burn in hell for saying that but aside from Sausage his side projects just arent nearly as good as Primus. I dont like how they tend to extend their songs live now and turn them into jam sessions. Their songs are great as they are, play em like that!

My favorite albums are Frizzle Fry and the Brown album. Brain is no Herb, but I always appreciated his straight forward groove. Kind of plays like Jay Lane, actually.

Nah dude, fair enough, I'm far less drawn to the solo stuff. It was still mindblowing enough live when I was 18.

Frizzle Fry is also my favourite (will never get enough of Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda or Tales from the Punchbowl either), and Brown album really grew on me a lot. Brain is nuts in his own way, but Herb is definitely my fave. Hopefully get to see him some day, I really liked the new album with him. It's also fun to see all of them do My Name Is Mud lol.
