Poll of the Day > Thoughts on Hollow Knight... MAYBE SOME SPOILERS...

So, its a pretty old game. But I only recently started playing it. I got it from PS+ or whatever. But Im liking it so far. Having a ton of fun. Lots to do, and so many areas to explore. Lots of stuff to collect, as well And not everything is possible on one playthrough, apparently And most playthroughs are probably very different. You can do a lot of the areas in any order (sans the first few, just to get started)

What are your thoughts on it? Have you played it? Did you play it when it first came out, or later after it came out? Stuff like that

Also, my favorite song from it so far is probably the Mantis Lords fight song

Good game, but everything referring to it as a Metroidvania negatively affected it for me.

I have it but never gotten very far into it. It's fairly hard.

It is. But it does get easier over time. Mainly due to learning how to play. And a little from getting new abilities and such

The gameplay is phenomenal.

The checkpoints are a bit too sparse for my personal taste, or at least positioned oddly, I don't like having to run back to bosses from far away.

I don't like the style of story telling as far as the main plot is concerned. But that's more of a general complaint towards an overall trend in gaming.

Played it when it first came to PS4. Is a great game for sure. And yeah some quests are passable/failable thus some different outcomes on them. But you can definitely see the vast majority of the game in one go, including all the endings.

The pantheon of Hallownest kinda killed my interest in ever replaying personally but if you want a challenge its definitely there for ya. Will be getting Silksong whenever it comes out for sure though.

Generally agreed with all of that. It's a unique and fun play: they get a lot out of a simple jump and slash game. It's generally possible to find a lot of the secrets on your own if you're good at looking around, and I like that.

But I agree the storyline is presented poorly...or not at all. The world seems cool, but I couldn't bring myself to care about a storyline that I had to look up to piece together (and even then it was kinda gobbledygook).

I really like it. Definitely one of those games with piece-y lore but I appreciate it after multiple playthroughs. Nightmare Grimm might be the most challenging boss Ive ever overcome, which is saying something.

I was super addicted to this game when I played it. The final pantheon was truly abhorrent though

Presumably because he doesn't like Metroidvanias.

Sort of like how, whenever someone describes something as "Like Dark Souls, but..." I immediately stop paying attention, because I don't really want to play games that are like Dark Souls in any way.

Easily one of my top 10 games. If you haven't done it already, be sure to take another trip back to the Grubfather after you bring him all of the grubs. There's a nice surprise waiting for you.

Could never get into it, but I also don't like a lot of metroidvanias. Well, I should clarify and say I like them when they are heavy on the "Metroid" and light on the "vania". Not a lot of them do this (Axiom Verge, at least the first one, is probably the best example that isn't actually from the Metroid series).

I love Metroidvanias, but in my head I do make a distinction between Metroidvanias and Metroidlike. (and while I do like Metroidlike, not as much as I love Metroidvania)

Hollow Knight definitely has Metroidlike progression, but I feel the RPG elements are not strong enough to call it a Metroidvania.

The part when the floor turns into spikes made me want to throw my controller

I enjoyed it quite a bit, there is an optional platforming section near the end I could do without ever playing through again though. I personally think there are better modern Metroidvania games, but I am likely in the minority on that opinion.

Yeah. I still have to finish that one

Ive been playing it off and on for a few weeks now. Sometimes its quite relaxing just plodding along discovering new maps and items and other times its really frustrating trying to get past certain platform sequences or bosses.
My kid was impressed that I defeated Hornet on my second try.

Im always trying to get the maps to places as early as I can. It makes exploring and just going places easier.

Love the game, almost in my Top 10.

The Final Pantheon wouldnt be so bad if it cut out like 8-10 bosses because some are redundant. If you can beat Hornet or the powered up Dreamnail Bosses, theres no point in having the weaker version early in the pantheon

Would shave off like 5 mins in a normally 35 min run

Beaten absolutely everything except AR on Radiant. Shit feels so damn random and fast for a no-hit fight

There are some happy things. Like a happy couple I just made. Or bringing a family together Things like that

It's a very cozy game.
