There is nothing wrong with having widely recognized fact checking institutions. Disinformation is one of the biggest threats to democracy and peace today. However, it shouldn't be a government body that does this. It should be a cooperative between numerous academic institutions, both public and private.

I don't like this at all, and agree "WTF is Biden thinking?"
Free speech is important. And while it might be restricted to stuff like medical misinformation that objectively and provably false and leads to real harm...

a) there's already processes to deal with that (like Alex Jones recently getting his pants sued off by Sandy Hook families)

b) What's to stop the next Republican from expanding its scope and going after anyone left of the far right?

Very poor idea, and terrible optics. It's like he's TRYING to cost Dems the next few elections.

I don't think there's been any firm details yet, so it's tough to have an objective news article about it beyond mentioning its creation.
Which is worrying. The more vague it is, the worse.

The board is tasked with standardizing and streamlining DHS' efforts to respond to disinformation that could be connected with violent threats to the U.S. homeland.

Disinformation is defined as "false information that is deliberately spread with the intent to deceive or mislead."

Previously, efforts to curb disinformation were carried out independently by agencies and offices operating under DHS' purview.

For instance, according to DHS, some of those projects include CISA's accounting of Russian cyber attacks and election interference, CBP's efforts to undermine false narratives peddled by human traffickers operating near the U.S.-Mexico border, DHS' guidance to the U.S. telecom industry to debunk false claims suggesting 5G cell towers spread COVID-19, and FEMA's fraud alerts, warning of criminals who take advantage of disaster survivors in the wake of super storms.

yeah, it's not a bad thing, it's literally just consolidation.

And yes every politician in the government is currently playing a "who can be the most hated" game.

Honestly, I have been thinking of this and I do think there should be a dedicated group committed to identifying how dogma spreads and how to prevent it in a scientific analysis sort of way, which could then go and put forward open source industry standard recommendation algorithms to social media groups. That's more open than "the government does it", though.

My vision of that would basically entail "what amount of random content needs to be injected into social media recommendations to mathematically prevent echo chambers while allowing as much customer retention as possible". Tl Dr an anti-algorithm algorithm.

In case I wasn't clear I think the root of the problem is that social media algorithms create feedback loops and echo chambers that give rise to more reality-detached ideas because their main driving force is customer retention. They use machine learning to hone it to a point, they don't even know what it's doing. For all they know the AI could be intentionally radicalizing people.

The article I read said "Imagine how this organization would run under DeSantis?"

Realistically speaking I have no clue what this branch would even do. The government already has intelligence agencies that obtain and verify information, so it seems likely this is supposed to be for civilians? Maybe? But to what point? The people who need help figuring out the truth are already full on rejecting reality this isn't going to help them, in fact it's likely to make them even more likely to reject the truth.

The even worse scenario is if they try to do something about misinformation? Which would easily step into violations of the first amendment. And absolutely horrifying to imagine under a conspiracy theorist president which seems likely to happen in my life time.

This is just such bad optics.

While misinformation is a big problem, I can see this being used to silence political opponents. Take Jan 6 for example. Even though trump was never charged with any wrong doing, he was still silenced for suggesting election fraud. If trump feels he was cheated, he should be able to say so, outside of libel and inciting violence.
Potentially the most dangerous mis information are the ones coming from official sources. False flags and such. Iran/contra type scandals and the like.

"Libel and inciting violence"

Let's see... every single thing he's said has been traced back to something made up on the internet, and the result of that was him sending an angry mob to the capitol and told them that Democracy was literally under attack, which is terrorism if done on purpose, and yeah if he did it a little better he could have just turned America Fascist right then and there.

He's probably the worst president we've ever had. So if he evades all legal consequences like always, then people think that something has to be done.

You have an odd definition of "silenced", considering he's never fucking shut up about it in the last two years.

Seriously, how can he be "silenced" when the government has not charged him with anything and he still routinely screams his falsehoods to anyone who will listen?
