sorta new to this whole "not eating meat" thing and a family member suggested we go to Outback because he really wants one of their steaks. i looked over their menu and i don't see anything as far as entrees go that are meatless. it looks like my only options are going to be ordering sides? and i dont see anything like a "sides only meal", so i guess i'll be paying $4/each. my current plan is to get a baked potato (no bacon), a side of rice and a side of "grilled veggies".

any vegetarians got any tips or ideas for eating at Outback?

They have salad options. Those come with meat but you can just tell them to not put it on.

I think you should also ask yourself your goals here.
If you are trying to be full veg, then you should communicate your dietary needs to the family and let them know it will be difficult for you, but that you'd be happy to just get a side or two and a dessert. Waiting until you are there and someone asks why you are ordering so strangely is likely to spoil the whole evening.

If you are just trying to be more mindful of what you are consuming, this may be a moment to realize that the options aren't there and do the best you can with like a chicken salad of some sort with another side.

Also seems the fried things are not considered veg, maybe animal fat or they fry meats in the same oil.

i saw those, but i really don't want to pay $15 or whatever for a salad w/chicken and not get the thing that accounts for 2/3 of that price.

those are both meat items and i prefer not to eat meat.

my family knows about my preferences. i specifically said to pick wherever and i will try to be flexible. i dont want my restrictions / preferences to dictate where they can eat, so i'm trying this.

Just get the bloomin onion as your meal and then offer some to whoever you are with also. Specify you want it as your meal, not ahead of time.

Outback sucks.

apparently it's 800 calories, which isn't horrible for a meal, but 58g of fat and 28g of saturated fat, gross

since i know many of you were anxiously awaiting the results of this .....

i ended up getting the "steakhouse mac n cheese", which was actually quite yummy, a side salad and a baked potato. was pretty filling, but sorta pricey at $13.85, but such is life when your meal is a la carte sides.

All of that for 13.85? Not bad at all

How about telling them you don't want to support a place that kills millions of cows a year?

I always got a kick out of veggies who still give money to places that slaughter

Yeah, sides/apps are basically your only option at lot steak places. Outback at least had a decent variety of apps and sides so you don't have to get like two kinds of potatoes.

And yeah, it's basically impossible to get a filling vegetarian salad at most places that isn't wildly overpriced. It's rarely a real option.
