If you are trying to be full veg, then you should communicate your dietary needs to the family and let them know it will be difficult for you, but that you'd be happy to just get a side or two and a dessert. Waiting until you are there and someone asks why you are ordering so strangely is likely to spoil the whole evening. If you are just trying to be more mindful of what you are consuming, this may be a moment to realize that the options aren't there and do the best you can with like a chicken salad of some sort with another side.
