Geez. I'm starting to kinda really want a new car tbh, with all the fancy-ass features they have.

Tesla does sell parts to third party shops. It requires the shops to go through some sort of certification process, though, in order to buy parts. I'm not sure what that process entails. There are a number of 3rd party shops that are certified and able to buy parts from Tesla. There needs to be more, but they do exist.

Yes, it's just like apple's retried certified repair center program that was hailed as one of the most anticonsumer by right to repair advocacy groups. The current situation is so bad that it spawned a whole underground tesla part trading ring, where they strip wrecked teslas for parts and repair them on the downlow so tesla doesn't find out and remotely disable features on your car because you replace parts like a suspension bit, or a body panel, then hold your car ransom behind a 5 figure "recertification fee".

Until you can roll up to a tesla service center, ask for a part, pay for said part, and roll out with that part without having to go through any sort of bullshit...again, just like how every other auto manufacturer does with electric or ICE cars, you're not going to convince anyone that a turd is not a turd.

I suspect it'll be outlawed under some blanket "any car before year X" ban that's nominally about fuel efficiency, before it dies. Even though the gas mileage I get in it is literally better than some hybrids.

Unless you're GM. Their electric vehicle recall was because the car would explode. They still haven't figured it out so they tell you not to park near buildings if you still got one.

You're implying that tesla is the only auto manufacturer that has these systems. Their "autopilot" is just glorified lane assist with adaptive cruise control and crash avoidance which is found on the majority of major brands as options. Hell, cadillac has a more advanced system on their high end models in the form of supercruise. Tesla just markets their "autopilot" solution as something that it's not.

With Mercedes, GM, Lexus, ect.. that all have these same systems, you can just buy the parts straight from the manufacturer, install them yourself in your driveway if you want, and there is zero issue.

OK, so again:

Tesla Navigate On Autopilot features:
  • Automatic collision avoidance (If a car moves into your lane, the car will automatically move to avoid the collision if there is room to do so. Not perfect, but I've seen it work multiple times.)
  • Automatic lane changes
  • Ability to detect a faster lane and move into it (optional)
  • Ability to navigate through interchanges on its own
  • Autopark (available on other cars)
  • Summon (available on other cars)
  • Smart summon (Car will navigate through a parking lot on its own either to you or to a designated spot)

Also, the cars the front-facing cameras to read stop signs and speed limit signs.

You're just going to stick your fingers in your ears either way, but you're just factually wrong.

I fail to see how those extra features are not just derivatives of lane assist and crash avoidance integrated with gps.

And Mercedes has been doing speed limit sign recognition since 2008, with it being integrated with their adaptive cruise control in more recent years. GM's supercruise does the same thing.

Lane assist simply keeps you in your lane as the car drives down the highway. That has nothing to do with the car automatically detecting a faster lane and moving into it, the car moving itself out of the passing lane if it isn't passing cars, or navigating interchanges.

I also never claimed other manufacturers weren't doing lane assist and speed limit detection beforehand. You're the one who claimed Teslas "just use GPS to detect road signs" when they use cameras to do so.

It's almost like you have no idea what you're talking about.

No. Lane assist uses machine learning to make the car aware of it's place within a space via known lane widths and cameras recognizing road markings. Just because a car isn't on a road, it still uses the same exact method to operate within a parking lot, it's just using a slightly different algorithm to use that same exact tech to achieve a different outcome.

In other words lane assist keeps the car in a lane as it travels down a highway.

What Tesla does with navigate on autopilot is more than that, as I have already explained.

Yes, it also keeps the car in a lane in the parking lot, recognizing parking space markings as a place to park using the same tech, but a different operating methodology when it switches to "parking mode" from "driving mode".

It uses the same crash avoidance systems it uses on the street to recognize occupied spaces from free ones.

It uses the adaptive cruise control to move about the parking lot at speed.

All tesla did was take the same established tech that was out there and wrote software for it to operate in a different way.

EDIT: And mind you, VW group had been testing that same kind of features years before tesla ever deployed it, but they didn't package and sell it in the same way tesla did because of legal liability/straight up not getting approval from governing bodies. Tesla just yolo'd it, ate the fines and used the customers as beta testers for an unproven product. All for the sake of making a name for themselves. It was an irresponsible, and honestly dangerous play for them to make.

Yes, it also keeps the car in a lane in the parking lot, recognizing parking space markings as a place to park using the same tech, but a different operating methodology when it switches to "parking mode" from "driving mode".

And no, it's not the exact same method to operate within a parking lot. Lane assist keeps you in a lane on a road. You can interchange parking lot, city street, highway, etc here, yes, but it's still not the same.

Smart summon:
  • Car takes itself out of park
  • Drives out of its parking spot
  • Navigates itself either to you or a designated spot, which includes:
  • Stopping at an intersection in the parking lot and waiting for pedestrians and traffic to clear.
  • Uses turn signals to indicate which direction it is going to turn as it navigates through the intersections
  • Driving itself around objects as long as they are detected (like other cars coming the opposite direction or pedestrians either walking or stopped)

Other cars don't do that and you know it. Or maybe you don't and you're just trying to keep up the lie.

All tesla did was take the same established tech that was out there and wrote software for it to operate in a different way

Since we're just repeating the same things over and over, lets just end it here. We've both dug our heels in and honestly this is boring/pointless. We'll just have to recognize we won't come to an agreement on this.
