Best cheese for easy melting; and can go well with a lot of things because of it's more mild taste. It isn't my go to cheese choice, but I have nothing against it. Unless you want me to eat a slice of it by itself; then its terrible.

Per J Kenji Lopez alt, it's pretty much the same thing as pre shredded cheese in that it is still cheese, but it has stuff added to it.

I don't fuck with it unless I'm making a cheese sauce. It's great for melting for like nacho cheese sauce.

I actually never had it until my early 20's. Its good on burgers, and as part of a grilled cheese. Also helps emulsify cheese sauces but you absolutely need better cheeses in there as well for a good flavor

Are we talking fake processed cheese like Kraft Singles and Velveeta, or real cheese from America like Wisconsin Colby or Monterey Jack? Because there's a difference. There's nothing wrong with real American cheeses and many are often great for cooking with because they generally have milder flavors then their European counterparts that don't overpower the rest of the recipe.

But that fake processed crap that many Americans seem happy and prideful to call their own deserves to be the butt of the joke when it comes to cheeses. Hell around here (I don't know if it's the same in the US itself) many of them aren't even legally allowed to be called "cheese" and get silly names like "pasteurized cheese product". I'm baffled people are calling it "the best cheese for a burger" assuming this is what they're referring to. A slice of cheddar or swiss is way better than a Kraft Single on a burger.

Sometimes I get giant bricks of it from the local reservation -- pretty good stuff, even if you didn't add it to anything. The Kraft stuff is trash, though, and I can't imagine wanting that on anything, even as an American. :P

I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if someone gave me food made with it but I pretty much would rather use muenster, cheddar or pepper jack for anything I'd use American cheese on.
