Do you have a life insurance policy?

41 y/o Ex Military Veteran, Christopher Collins is charged with the murder of his 46 y/o wife, Yuan Hua Liang after her body was found inside their home in Cypress on November 18!!

The Texas woman was found dead with a single gunshot wound to her head just 2 days after she signed a $250,000 LIFE INSURANCE POLICY!!

Collins went to "great lengths" to convince investigators that a black male suspect broke into their houston home!!

The bullet was fired from a .22 or .25 caliber firearm as collins told cops his wife bought a .9mm pistol but added he didn't have the ammo but police later found a .22 mm cartridge inside Collins pocket

A cloth bag that was placed over her head determined to have been put there after her death according to autopsy

A neighbor reported hearing an argument at the home the same day her body was found

4 dogs were also found unharmed in their backyard

Collins called the county sherif's hoffice to request a welfare check on his wife. He called a non-emergency hotline at 3:15pm claiming he got a text about someone breaking into their home as he worked out at a gym nearby and got something ot eat

The caller said he lost contact with his wife shortly after a suspicous "black" male was near their residence. Police went over and discovered her dead body

Documents showed Colins "paused" momentarily in the doorway and dropped his bags and ran into the living room where her body was found lying on the floor with visible blood on her shirt and "acted" in shock.

There were no signs of forced entry and observed the backdoor was unlocked with the dogs out back

When asked by officers why he didn't check their home surveillance cameras, he said there was no recording and only picked up a live feed

He is now held on 150,000 bond and is expected to make his first court apperance.

Pretty sure, this insurance policy won't payout. Even on the best of days, insurance companies will try to fight you on payout even if it's legit, in this case, it's easy to prove attempted insurance fraud.

This is a tragedy, but Duckbear is spreading misinformation. The articles never mention the race of his home invader. Why are you twisting an already twisted story?

Christopher Collins, 41, is facing charges that he killed his wife Yuanhua Liang, 46, and went to great lengths to make it look as if she was shot and killed by a home invader.

Yeah this. The usual is to have a stand down period where if you die in the first e.g. 6-12 months you don't get a payout but you get a refund of all premiums.

Yeah they wont pay out. Theres all kinds of clauses to prevent payouts like this. Making a claim 2 days after you sign a policy sends up all kinds of red flags.

20 years ago I heard all kinds of stories of them catching fraud before investigations were as easy to do. Now with all the stuff out there on the internet, there is no way the dude gets a payout.

This is not true actually. With any reputable life insurance company, you are covered from the moment you sign all the paperwork and do your physical/ health test. At this point during underwriting you are covered, and they will still go through the underwriting process as if you are still alive. If you would have been approved if you were alive, your family will get the payout.

Source: Working 3 years in the life insurance business and seeing this type of scenario playing out on more than one occasion.

Now, where this scenario is different is that he is the one that killed her and he was also the beneficiary. So no, in this case the payout would most likely not happen unless she had contingent beneficiaries for the money to be paid to. But I would still be surprised if it happened.

Frequently might not be the best word but its bound to happen to you or another agent that you know at some point if you are in the business long enough. For example I saw a scenario where a woman literally had just signed the paperwork and did the physical and died in a car wreck on the way home. We still underwrote the case and since she would have been covered otherwise, we still enforced the policy and then paid the full death benefit out to her family, without a fight.

That being said, I never personally saw a case where one spouse killed another, With the killer spouse being the beneficiary. So this scenario would be more tricky. I can guarantee that the killer spouse wont get the money although its possible that either her family will get it (if she had contingent beneficiaries) or her estate. However I would not be surprised at all if the company did not pay out in this scenario because there are clauses for foul play and what not in the contract.

That being said, insurance companies are more likely to payout in scenarios like this if the policy was enforced long enough. For example, the company I worked for would not payout if you committed suicide within 2 years of the policy being enforced. After the two years though, they would pay, without a fight.

Same. I was wondering where people were getting that from cause every company I worked with (one main very large company plus a few others from time to time when the large one wouldnt underwrite specific clients) as well covered you from the moment you signed the application AND completed the physical. Even before they finished actually underwriting/processing it all.

If there is some company out there that only enforces policies 6 months post application, Id have to imagine that that company is not reputable AT ALL. But then again given how regulated the insurance business is, Im not sure thats even possible.

Then may be confusing it with a grace period for suicide.

I can only speak for the company that I worked for, which is considered to be one among the top 3 in the industry, and even that company only had a two year suicide grace period. I doubt many other companies would do much better than that to be honest.

But this scenario would be different than that cause the husband is the both the cause of her death and the beneficiary. This would surely get filed under insurance fraud so the payout in this one would be tricky regardless of how long the policy was in force for.
