Ok so first off repost.

Second off still not seeing a picture of the lawn. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people hate HOA's (myself included) however, I've never lived anywhere HOA or not where you can let your yard go wild and not run afoul some city code. So without a picture of the lawn I can't lay blame on the HOA for this.

What I take away from the story is the cops try to contact the person. They refuse to open the door so the workers start and then the dude starts opening fire from inside the house. In no world, even if the HOA was being unreasonable, can I just overlook that. Dude had no justification for what he did, he set his own house on fire, and then committed suicide by cop.

Your thread title is bull shit.

The cops admitted that they were enforcing an HOA covenant, not a city ordinance. The government had no right to get involved in the first place and while shooting at people wasn't justified, the HOA and the government did "start this" when they vastly overstepped their authority.

Your thread title is bull shit.
Sensationalist, but technically true.
If it weren't for an overbearing HOA getting the authorities involved for something that wasn't against any law on the books, the home owner would not be dead right now.

Police serve orders all the time, while sometimes it can be done by mail it is also done in person. That is the extent of their involvement until the shooting began unless I misunderstood something.

I purposely worded it like that. Cops shouldn't get involved in the first place for something as ridiculous as this.

Remember, if your neighbors start shooting try resolving it through civil process before involving the police. This lunatic would still be alive if the evil HOA didn't call 911!

The version of the story I read said the guy set fire to the house, then when the fire department tried to put out the fire the guy opened fire on them. THAT is when the police shot and killed him. The police were actually being quite reasonable in this instance, having sent in mental health officers and a crisis negotiator.

Pretty much. If the HOA's being unreasonable (likely), there are legal channels through which to fight that. Absolutely none of them include opening fire on anyone or setting fires. He was killed because he was endangering everyone around him, and while it's tragic that he clearly had mental health issues that were not resolved before leading to this outcome, you can't fault the police for killing somebody that was shooting at people. That's their job.

Nobody is blaming the police. The only blame is going towards the HOA.

I'm pretty sure a considerable portion of the blame lies on the guy that started shooting at people. It's very easy to conclusively say that he wouldn't be dead if he hadn't started shooting at people.

Do you have citations from parallel universes in which the man survives, without any HOA, or is it likely something else would have killed him due to his own making? Don't assume such a thing -- cause versus correlation.

Dude was clearly dangerous, while he might currently be alive at this moment I have no reason to believe he wasn't so unstable he wouldn't have found another way to commit suicide by police.

Sure, in the same way that you can say that somebody who goes on a shooting spree because they stubbed their toe wouldn't have done so if that table leg didn't exist. The HOA created a problem, yes, but it's his disproportionate reaction to that problem that resulted in his death, not the problem itself. There's absolutely no reason for a dispute over lawn care to involve bullets.

This. And it's stupid that cops won't come out to be a car accident happening on a business's property yet the the city will mow some guy's lawn at the request of the HOA then mow that guy down when he objects.
