South park said it best, either it's all okay or none of it is. Then again they're hypocrites, they made that episode about Muhamad and Comedy Central pulled it because they feared the backlash and rather than stick to their guns and make even more offensive episodes, they bowed to the network censors and still make seasons to this day, money trumps ideals for Matt and Trey yet they're always happy to preach at other people.

Nothing Chappelle said was really comparable.
"Gender is a fact" is an invalidating (and incomprehensible) statement. Misgendering is invalidating. Pinning the death of a supposed friend on some nebulous "twitter mob" is outright offensive.

I'm surprised in you man :/

It's been awhile since I was really reading up on trans issues but I took "gender is a fact," to refer to inherent differences in men and women. That doesn't necessarily have to mean cisgendered people. IIRC, it was found that transwomen have brains that are structured differently than cis men, which would validate them if anything.
So he's conflating sex with gender and unwilling to acknowledge they aren't the same thing? And he still misgendered her (because funny?) in his closing joke, incorporating her passing into said joke. But that's not "actually offensive"?

As for Daphne Dorman, her family seems to side with him, if anything. That seems to be a pretty big deal. They wouldn't have to do that if they didn't feel he was being genuine in his support of trans people.
Mhm, what did her roommate say? What did she think of her family, how did they treat her?

I think context and execution is important.

Technically any subject can be joked about but that doesn't mean that you're going to get a good reception just because it's a joke. Comedy isn't a shield. Like everything else it's open for criticism.

I'm not saying that specifically about Chapelle or anything but it's always been like this really. Comedians who whine about their audience probably aren't really thinking about it correctly.

Anything can be funny, even blackface in 2021. While Tropic Thunder was 2008, RDJs character was funny as hell and done great.

It just has to be done VERY carefully, and by someone... very funny. Louie CK, or if George Carlin were still alive could definitely incorporate it into an act.

That's simply never been true though, no matter how many try and preach that comedy is some "sacred entity".

It has always been censored and limited by something. And either way, there are numerous offensive comedians who are massively successful and still making offensive comedy. People don't have an issue with "offensive comedy" (obviously some do) but the issue is when you are just disguising bigotry as comedy, then it's not really comedy and you just trying to hide you're a bigot.

If an "offensive" comedian can't succeed without just being a bigot, then they are a shit comedian. Plenty are able to do it, and Dave certainly is.

I personally agree that nothing should be off-limits in comedy. But that doesn't mean everything should be treated equally. The more important the subject matter the more important it is that your joke is good. If someone makes a bad poop joke, no big deal. No harm done. If someone makes a bad joke about rape though, that's a different story. So, yeah go ahead and make a joke about whatever, but don't be shocked if your shitty joke about a marginalized group catches a bunch of backlash because you forgot to actually make it a good joke.

Actions have consequences.

I welcome poking fun at trans people. Chappelle wasn't poking fun on the level of comedy. He ranted and used trans people as the target.
