Their first completely new all-time list since 2004 (I believe they did an 'update' in 2010 or so where they added a few new songs but didn't rearrange anything). It's an interesting list; did not expect Rolling Stone of all publications to put "Get Ur Freak On" in the all-time top 10.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-songs-of-all-time-1224767/

All of their choices in the top couple hundred seem standard fare for critics if not RS specifically - the only real headscratcher I caught was a remix of Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina" at #50.

Royals at 20.
Seven Nation Army in the top 100

The list is legit indefensible in how bad it is, just in the top 100 I can go on for hours.

I love them both (both are on my most listened to playlist) . And no they dont

They are both great songs. Neither one is remotely close to a top 35 song all time. Top 200 for Royals seems reasonable, Seven Nation Army is hard to place cause of the lack of real lyrics or point.

yeah i agree that is a problem if seven nation army is top 100

if you need to specify top 100 then that must mean its way too low. we should be talking about top 50 or 25 here at least

They're two of the biggest songs of their eras and are commonly cited on similar lists at a similar level. They were both immediate successes with critics and in popular culture which is increasingly rare in the Internet era. What does 'lack of real lyrics' mean when talking about a guitar rock song? You do understand there is music without vocals, right? You even apparently 'love them' yourself, so what on earth are you talking about?

And those arent the worst offenders, just the two that stuck out the most to me at first glance. I would argue at least 20% of the top 100 doesnt belong in a top 1,000, and they have 1 of the worst songs ever in the top 10.

The 2004 list is rightly demeaned, but most of it is because of order, not making the list as a whole.

Id have to check it again, but I dont think there was one Pink Floyd song in the top 100.

The probable 10 most famous rock bands ever, Beatles, Queen, Zepplin, Eagles, Fleetwood, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Stones, AC/DC, and Metallica have a combined 6 songs in the top 100.

A RNG of the highest rock selling albums of all time would have created a better list.

I love tons of stuff that I can admit isnt the greatest ever.

Sonic Adventure 2 is one of my favorite games ever, I would immediately decry any list that has it as a top 20 game all time as a god awful list.

Its an amazingly fun song (it sure as hell isnt the 35th best ever).

Its memorable and has great riffs. Its one of the few songs I could think of that if I ever hear on there is no way Id change the channel or skip to another song.

So what does make the top 35 songs in MooglesRUs world, then? Like, you are doing nothing but praising this song other than insisting that other people liking it is bad?

But the hype behind "Seven Nation Army" largely derives from the colossal sound Jack White managed to create while only using two instruments. It's as technically impressive as it was popular.

"Royals," meanwhile, signaled a new era of pop music by rejecting the glamour of the previous era while also bringing minimalism to the forefront. It was like little else before it in the pop sphere.

Neither of these songs get their hype purely from being 'fun.' There are dozens of songs every year that top the charts and get no lasting attention - there is a clear cultural difference between "Royals" and something like "Shape Of You" or "All About That Bass."

i didnt say others liking it was bad. I said there isnt a way it should be that high. A top 100 song of all time should either have a message directly from the band about something (so like Dreams for instance in their top 10) or a culturally significant song that once again, has a powerful message (Like Testify, which I dont think made the top 100), or tells a story that captivates the audience well after that song is played on the radio any longer. The final one and maybe the hardest to place is just demonstrated musical mastery over something. Its not like Seven Nation Army goes and massacres a guitar in the song. Its just good and fun to listen to.

So you are placing a song as top 40 ever because its enjoyable and has nice riffs, and because it tries to emulate a bass guitar sound. I just dont feel its near enough to warrant that level of rank.

you know what. Thats actually fair for Royals. You are right, I still think 20 is ridiculous but I can agree it was a line of demarcation for pop songs, and that is warranted top 100 when you also factor its a great song. Thats historical significance as well as greatness. Thats certainly top 100

I mean, they are clearly writing from a popular music perspective, being a popular music magazine. There just isn't much notable popular music from before 1950 that really holds up artistically, but the obvious choice of "Strange Fruit" at least landed high. Like, there's not going to be any classical music here because few if any classical pieces would be considered 'songs,' and I'm honestly not sure of any major 'songs' that predate the recording era that have somehow persisted.

Edit: so we are really just looking at the 1900-1950 period getting overlooked, but I can't think of many pieces outside of early jazz which really isn't in Rolling Stone's wheelhouse.

royals is probably so high because of a combination of it being historically significant and the "omg lorde was so young when she made it" factor. that being said, i don't know if it was THAT revolutionary. i think lana del rey laid the groundwork for lorde becoming popular.

That's my bigger problem with the list, lying more in the exclusions than inclusions. "Video Games" did not make the list at all. Overall, this list seems to consider popularity too heavily; they largely picked the right popular songs, but there are plenty of great and influential songs that did not immediately hit the charts that are left off. "Video Games" to "Royals" is a clear chain and it's weird to put one so high and exclude the other.

No other comments on "Gasolina" being top 50? Like, that's weird, right? Though perhaps part of my problem here is that the other forum I frequent is for a site that compiles critic lists, so I'm over-aware of odd picks. But on that site, "Gasolina" doesn't even rank in the top 100 for its year. To compare, pretty much every other song in this top 100 is in that site's all-time top 1000.
