So Ive come to the conclusion that Metroid NES is a fun game, fucked by absolutely sadistic level design. There is no reason for the game to be as hostile to the player as it is. I swear some sections of the map were just designed to waste players time. Making long loops through enemy-dense halls for no or little reward. Hiding essential power ups in hidden areas that you need to backtrack to, that you wouldnt even think to backtrack to if you hadnt found it before leaving.

The game gets compared to Zelda a lot, but Zelda at least saved its most supreme bullshit for the second quest.

...still not as bad as Simons Quest, tho. >_>

Congrats. It's not a terrible game, but not being able to switch between Ice and Wave and having to grind for Energy is a pain in the ass.

I tried to play it blind at first, but finding out where Kraids lair was pissed me off so much I just said screw it and looked up a map for the rest of the game lol.

I got leotard Samus, but not bikini Samus. One of these days I might go for the bikini, but Im done with this game for a while. Might boot up Zero Mission again just to wash the salt out of my mouth >_>

I'm not complaining, I grew up in the age of sadistic levelHESHECANTHOPETOBEATTHIS design but yeah it's why I'm not fuckin around on the NES/SNES emu shit Nintendo puts out. And my older sister and my pops (the one I dont talk to) was miiiiiiillllleeeessss better at these than I was. I cant even fuck with platformers anymore to be honest, dead genre for me

No, these are legit but they are few in number. SM3 is the one of the few Mario games I even really enjoy anymore aside from his offshoots. And Kirby is always good for some side scrolling non-pain induced fun :3

Yoshi's Woolly World and Crafted World, as well as Yoshi's Story. These are some other good options

Don't forget obviously accessible powerups suspended over a pit of acid where one mistake means wading slowly through acid as your life ticks away until you can get back to a platform you can reach.
