absolutely sadistic level design. There is no reason for the game to be as hostile to the player as it is. I swear some sections of the map were just designed to waste players time. Making long loops through enemy-dense halls for no or little reward. Hiding essential power ups in hidden areas that you need to backtrack to, that you wouldnt even think to backtrack to if you hadnt found it before leaving.
Don't forget obviously accessible powerups suspended over a pit of acid where one mistake means wading slowly through acid as your life ticks away until you can get back to a platform you can reach.
