Working on a game. The budget is zero dollars, so I've got to learn how to do the art myself. I've been fucking around with Gale and so far this is what I've got for the protag. (It's an RPG, so I'd like to come up with a male counterpart the player can choose, but we'll see how my ambition holds up)

The retro 8-bit look isn't my preferred aesthetic, but I don't have the talent to risk anything better than this <_<

why are the hands and legs slightly different colors? shading effect? it works on the legs but with the hand on the right it is hard to distinguish from the color of the jacket.

it was an attempt at shading. The leg/hand further away are darker. Idk if it works. <_<

for foreground and back, but the angle of her body kind of clashes with that.

It really depends on the style you're going for.
What unit dimensions are you working with? 32x32? Cuz that's awfully small for a single character.

I've been working on an indie game for a couple years now and had to learn to make sprites from scratch. My best advice is to look up a bunch of sprites from games you like the artstyle of. Study them and it'll help you realize what you wanna do with your own.

Also download Aseprite. It's the BEST program out there for pixel art.

Is it really that small? I was looking at NES games for reference since that's going to be my limit.

I put together a shitty animation.

If you're going for old-timey NES map sprite look, then I guess it's not too small. Like I said, it depends on what kind of style you're trying to do.

Like with the game I've been working on, I do 2:1 tall sprites, and each unit is 48x48, just to give myself plenty of room to work with:

If you're looking to do more of a realistically proportioned art style, then that's pretty good. But a lot of oldschool games like Zelda and Pokemon using 16x16 or 32x32 still had cartoony proportions where the head took up most of the square and gave it more of a classic "gamey" look.

Like I said, it all really depends on what kind of look the game has.

Ooh that walking animation looks great. The thing I'd worry about is if the sprite would be hard to read on certain backgrounds. It's so colorful and thin that it might look messy when you walk around lighter environments.

I'm sorry, but 10,000 of ANYTHING on a PS2 would absolutely destroy your framerate. It'd be like playing chess through the mail. ~johnboy1

This is a good point. Its all a work in progress and subject to change, but Ill definitely experiment with different colors for characters and environments to see what works.

So the current plan is for it to be a player insert for an action-RPG. The basic premise is that the player is works for an organization that investigates and combats threats like kaiju, supernatural events, etc. (nerds will notice the current uniform shamelessly rips off the SSSP from Ultraman. Im going to change it up to be more original, but for now this is what I got >_>)
