If you're going for old-timey NES map sprite look, then I guess it's not too small. Like I said, it depends on what kind of style you're trying to do.

Like with the game I've been working on, I do 2:1 tall sprites, and each unit is 48x48, just to give myself plenty of room to work with:



If you're looking to do more of a realistically proportioned art style, then that's pretty good. But a lot of oldschool games like Zelda and Pokemon using 16x16 or 32x32 still had cartoony proportions where the head took up most of the square and gave it more of a classic "gamey" look.


Like I said, it all really depends on what kind of look the game has.
