He wasn't really meant to be cool or important, he just got over with the fans due to the mystery factor. It's based entirely on "Who the hell is this guy standing up to Vader?"

Also I have a confession. I dont know anything about IG88. I just thought he was pain in the ass in the Nintendo 64 game. I was like 9 lol.
