when i first got my dog, Omar, he was about nine months old and had medium to severe separation anxiety. at first it was so bad he literally tore apart the carpet in front of the door to the garage the first time i left him home alone (totally my bad for not crating him). after that i got a crate and started training him with it. but he hated it and would basically have panic attacks anytime i left him in there. i worked with the vet a bunch and tried various prescriptions and training to help him get over this.

then covid happened and i was home almost all of the time. as time passed, he got more comfortable to the point where i can leave him alone in the house for 9-10 hours and he's cool, but he still gets really excited when i come home.

so in like two days i leave for my first vacation since the pandemic and i'll be having a good friend watch Omar. i trust my friend 100%, so i'm not worried about him at all. but i wish i could somehow tell poor little Omar that i still love him and ill come back soon. i really hope he doesn't regress and have panic attacks due to thinking i abandoned him ;_;

obligatory Omar tax:

He'll be waiting. Don't feel bad. He's probably be waiting for you to go on vacation.

May I ask why you can't take Omar with you?

You should be fine. My dog had bad separation anxiety as a pup. I started working from home prior to the pandemic and she grew out of it. It would be bad if i left for even an hour she would bark like crazy.

I started exercising her more and introducing her to more people and she grew out of it. When i left on my first trip and left her with my mom she was perfectly fine.

i thought about it. we are staying in the Smoky Mountains and national parks/forests don't allow dogs. the cabin we are staying in does allow them, but they are required to be crated while we are gone. so he'd basically be alone in the cabin, stuck in a crate for most of the day and he'd probably bark and be annoying to neighbors

i'm trying not to. i bet he'll have fun playing with my friend's toddlers because they like to chase him and chase is his favorite thing.

ya, that's how Omar was. he could tell when i was getting ready to leave and he'd run away from me so i couldnt crate him. i'd hear him start barking once i closed the door to the garage and he'd be barking whenever i came home. im sure my neighbors hated it (i did explain the situation and apologized).

he's been socialized a bunch and i make sure to leave him home alone a few times a week. i also exercise him on the regular. thanks for the encouragement

Dogs can sense when you're worried.

Don't make a big deal out of it and he'll be fine

He'll miss you when you're gone but once you're back he'll have forgotten that you left.

The mistake a lot of owners make is they get upset and panic and act like a massive weird thing is happening. Dogs will pick up on that and start to get scared and panic.

This is why every expert says not to make a big deal and goodbye to a dog everytime you leave the home. You don't want your dog to think you not being there for a while is a big scary abnormal event

Oh. :(

One thing you could do would be to call your buddy and have him put the phone on speaker, Omar should be able to recognize your voice, assuming of course you talk to him regularly. That might help.

The fact that hes gotten to where he can stay home all day now gives you good cause to feel comfortable, i think. Hell be okay. Good on you being such a loving and concerned dog parent

i read this same thing on almost every resource i found about SA. don't make a big deal about leaving, but DO have a 'phrase' you repeat before you leave that "should" signal your return. i tell him "ill be back buddy"

that post was all helpful advice, thank you!

i've thought about that, but i think it may confuse him? he did wander onto a zoom call w/my mom back when that was the only way to socialize and he definitely recognized her and started pawing at the screen lmao

Omar is such a cute name for a dog <3

sending much love to Omar and those 2 days with your pal <3

he's named after Omar Little from The Wire. i never get tired of saying "OMAR COMIN YO" when he's running into the house, or just zooming around.

I worry about this with my cat. Have had him like 6 or 7 years or something like that. In all that time since getting him the longest I ever left him alone was 17 hours. And when I got back he wouldn't leave my side for hours

I think sometimes about going on trips but I don't know how he would feel. If I left him at a pet hotel he might think I was giving him away

if i didn't have a friend to dogsit i dont know if i would go on vacation. i really dont think i'd be fine with leaving him at a boarders where he'd be caged and ignored most of the day :(
