Some people don't like her because she comes across like a space racist early on. And the angsty teens don't like her because she believes in God. And some people just find her a bit grating.

Personally I generally save Kaiden 100% of the time - I think the one time I didn't was when I was specifically doing a run to romance her.

Which means I still romanced her at least one more time than I've ever romanced Jack.

Don't they both act like an asshole to you in...I think ME2? If I recall correctly, they both fuck with you over working with Cerberus. I don't think any other character cares beyond a passing comment because you're god damn Shepherd and they trust you.

To be fair, you wouldn't know that if you're playing ME1 first, so that information is completely useless when it comes to deciding which one survives Virmire

Ashley's almost never been an asshole to me on Horizon, because every time I get there she's been dead for two years.

That being said, they kind of have good reason, even if you don't see it that way because you're THE PROTAGONIST. From their perspective, you've either been in hiding for two years, or they take your story at face value and accept that you were dead but you were literally rebuilt and brought back to life by a noted terrorist organization you've fought before. Miranda mentions personality control chips, so they clearly exist in the setting, and for all Kaiden/Ashley know, you've been implanted with one. Or as you yourself muse in ME3, what if you're just an advanced AI who thinks it's commander Shepard - but which is fully under Cerberus control? They've been leaked information that says Cerberus is behind the abductions AND that they're potentially going to attack Horizon, and then suddenly you show up there in the middle of an abduction (potentially with blatant Cerberus operatives Jacob or Miranda). You look REALLY BAD - and the only reason we as the audience sympathize more with Shepard is because we ARE Shepard.

Plus, they're pretty clearly lashing out because they feel hurt ("Why didn't you tell me? I would have followed you anywhere!"), which is only worse if you romanced them in ME1. And they're in the middle of a really emotional moment - they're upset because they just failed to protect the colony, and suddenly BOOM, you're there.

And then they apologize almost immediately afterwards by e-mail:

Garrus and Tali don't judge you as harshly because you literally save their lives the moment you meet them in ME2 (and they were both younger and more impressionable in ME1, so they hero-worship you a bit more). Wrex doesn't care because he's Wrex (assuming you didn't kill him in ME1). And Liara doesn't care because she's the one who gave your body to Cerberus in the first place - but she can still come across as a bit of an asshole (especially if you romanced her in ME1) unless you play through Lair of the Shadow Broker (which you should, because it's awesome).

if ashley survived, and you get her, she has 0 interaction with anyone in the ship. she just sits in her room drinking booze all the time. always. she'll have scripted interactions during missions and the such, but she doesn't mingle like everyone else on the ship.

kaiden, on the other hand, does. he interacts, he actually does things. he actually has a resolution to his arc, he walks around, he mingles with people with unique dialogue and everything, whereas ashely...doesn't. her story just fizzles out and...that's it.

I can't really comment on that, because like I said, I almost never take Ashley into ME3. But Kaiden doesn't have a ton of interaction with other people either. He WILL come out of his room occasionally (the main one I can think of off the top of my head is when he and Vega play cards), but most of his between-mission dialogues are in there as well.

They probably didn't want to integrate either of them too strongly, considering there are multiple ways you can wind up with them dead by that point, and thus they wouldn't be around for the dialogues.

But I DO know that, if you don't romance her, Ashley can wind up having a one-night stand with Vega:

Kaiden's way better than Carth though. Carth's mostly whiny and paranoid unless you're romancing him, while Kaiden's mostly just stoic (and he's got a secret crush on you and is too uptight to bring it up unless you start dating the space lesbian, at which point he gets jealous).

Kaiden's also technically the 3rd/4th highest ranking person on the Normandy in ME1 - the only people that outrank him are Shepard, Pressly, and Anderson. That's usually part of my in-character reason for saving him over Ashley - when forced to make an unbiased choice between a ranking officer and an NCO, you should probably save the officer - it's a greater loss of skill and time/resource investment. Even aside from the fact that in-universe one of the most powerful biotics in the Alliance military is probably a more valuable asset than a pissed-off chick with a gun.

My other main reason is because he's the tactician of the two (Shepard will more or less say this outright when they say that they go to Ashley when they want to hear an opinion from the heart and Kaiden when they want to hear one from the head). So when Kirrahe asks you to loan him one of your people, I give him Kaiden (he'd easily be the more rational choice for that role). And then when you have to to decide who to save at the end of the mission, you're technically not choosing between Ashley and Kaiden, you're choosing between the single person left behind with the bomb and the other person who is still with Kirrahe and the entire rest of his surviving team. Utilitarian logic implies you should always pick Kirrahe - which for me, also means always picking Kaiden.

I think the only time I ever went back for Ash was the run when I was romancing her, so I played it as if I was allowing my personal bias to trump logistical and logical concerns.

I MIGHT also have saved her in the run I did as a pissed-off xenophobic Ruthless Renegade Shepard who took no names but kicked all of the ass, because I felt like the two of them would be like super space-besties. Though ironically, that's also the same run where my Shepard wound up fucking Garrus.

Jack has been my Paramore ever since she was MVP in a hardcore Insanity run. She's great.

I always save Kaiden because Ashley has survivor's guilt from losing her squad, she genuinely wants to make that sacrifice.

The more time goes on the more I realize 3 was kinda shit, I hated the weight system for weapons, the story is mediocre and rushed plot points from previous games, and the combat as a whole felt way too actiony with mechs and ninja assassins flying all over, most missions feel drawn out and uninteresting except for a few standout ones.

It's the writers thinking they're artistes while writing shit that a teenager would think is deep.

The dream sequences (and everything attached to them, including the eventual pay-off) are some of the worst parts of ME3 for me. And part of why I always scoffed when people would say the only problem with the game was the ending.

Yes, the ending IS bad, and the Extended Cut fixed SOME of the problems with it, but the ending as-is is still utterly terrible, and there are still major problems in other parts of the game as well.

That being said, I'd also say that maybe 90% of ME3 is awesome, so I'm usually willing to suffer through the bad bits for the good bits.

I also like to pretend that the game ends when Anderson dies, and none of the nonsense with the Catalyst ever happens. Because it's stupid. Also, I like to pretend that after the best Destroy ending (which is the only one I ever pick), they manage to recover Shepard and rebuild what's left of the Citadel, and the Citadel DLC actually takes place AFTER the war with the Reapers, as a sort of ending to the series).

I always found that funny because, if you paid attention, not only does she actively dismiss actual space racists/earth-first people but...

The situation she outlined where the council throws humanity under the Reapers so they can try to save their own worlds is exactly what happens in 3. Like she said, the council saw humanity as a dog. They loved them but they were still willing to throw them at the 'bear' of the Reapers to assure their own survival.

I always liked her as she had some actual character to her in 1. She liked poetry but a specific kind. She struggled with the stigma surrounding her family because of what her grandfather did. She was religious in a game where the only religion that gets fleshed out even slightly is the Asari one (and even then it's 'it was the protheans) and a bit from Thane regarding Drell religion. I recall hearing that the Salarians believed in reincarnation. She even refuses to work with you in 2 because, while she's not a fan of aliens, she refuses to work with what she sees as an alien hate group.

Then 3 came along and it was like they wrote the plot for Kaiden and only remembered after the fact that he might not be around. She was bland with almost no character. I was like 'really?' She's the second human specter who served directly under Shepard. No aliens coming up and expressing a fear that she, someone known to not be a fan of aliens, has an ancestor shamed by aliens, who served under a Cerberus operative, might lash out against aliens? Or expressing hope she might break free of Shepard's shadow? Or seeing her as being no different? It felt really lame and underwhelming to see her character come to what felt like a dead stop when there should have been MORE.

Not quite accurate. To fit Ashley's analogy, the Council would have needed to actively send the Alliance against the Reapers. That isn't what happens in 3. The Reapers hit the batarians first (because that's where they come through), then simultaneously strike Palaven (to tie up as much of the turians forces as they can) and Earth (because Shepard pissed them off).

The turians are willing to help, but initially can't spare the manpower. The asari and salarians, yes, are more hesitant, but again, they don't "sacrifice" humanity like Ashley said. They just don't go out of their way to help.
