You'd think nintendo would wise up becasue a god damn photography game would benefit from free roam. But no. Nintendo being old ass dumb ass and make a literal game where you take pictures on rails instead of free roam.

The rail system is kind of necessary for the design. The point is to see how many points you can get along the given track. Maybe having a "free" mode where you control the car would have been nice, but for the regular game, it makes sense

Not open world, but smaller level that you can roam free. That means each players can have different angles, different shots, etc according to their tastes and creavity.

Of course that will take nintendo not being lazy, aka instead of scripted pokemon appearance and activity, they have to program something that actually resemble an ecosytem with mons have their own habitat that makes sense, territory and such.

I could see an open-world (or at least open-level) Snap working but it'd be much less streamlined. Casually walking around and taking shots might be less exciting and limited and to fill it out there'd need to be an equivalent of dungeons or shrines like in Zelda... Curated areas with puzzle-solving so you had more to do than just walk and aim your camera at stuff.

With the Safari aspect they can curate the entire stage and fill it with secrets too.

The rails are part of the whole system, gives a sense of timing, consistency, and urgency. A free roam Snap would be almost a completely different genre.

It's harder than you think to do that. On rails shooters have existed forever, and capcom experimented with letting players control their movements more with a few games in the ps1/2 era.

I think you could pull it off but I don't think it's lazy not to. It sounds like they have added plenty of variety in other ways
