You can be around people but you're still going to be by yourself. You're lonely because you're surrounded by your glaring lack of companionship.

I never feel lonely. I spend every day by myself. It's very cold in my room. I am listening to my neighbour shuffle around upstairs.

I would say you may not feel understood or related to by the people physically around you.

So emotionally and mentally, youre alone. As you dont feel connected to folks.

I felt this way a lot when i was younger, in my teens and early 20s. I'm an introvert and it just seemed like everyone was so...loud all the time, and it just felt so false to me, like they were putting on some kind of show. Unfortunately all you can do at that age is deal with it, but as an adult I'm more in control of the types of situations I find myself in. Turning off news and social media is helpful.
