Neighborhoods in several different southern New Hampshire towns were rocked by a mysterious explosion Tuesday night.

Kingston police say the blast was caused by a family using explosives to reveal the gender of their baby.

Chief Donald Briggs said the blast happened at Torromeo Industries on Dorre Road around 7 p.m.

Kingston residents say it was like nothing they had ever heard before.

It was earth-shaking, said a neighbor on Dorre Road.

Sara Taglieri and her husband, Matt, live in a home that abuts the Torromeo quarry.

"We heard this god-awful blast, Sara said. It knocked pictures off our walls.

It shook houses in surrounding neighborhoods and was even captured on a doorbell camera from the next town over. The Taglieris called 911 and waited for Kingston police.

In the meantime, social media lit up. People as far south as the Merrimack Valley were wondering what had happened.

Some claimed it was an earthquake, but thats not the case. Our team of meteorologists said there were no earthquakes reported around that time.

Kingston police confirm it was a gender reveal using explosives.

Are you kidding me? said Taglieri. Im all up for silliness and what not, but that was extreme.

Authorities are still investigating but they believe the people involved used a legal explosive called Tannerite and had permission to be on the Torromeo Industries property.

It cracked foundations of our neighbors' [homes], Matt Taglieri said. I dont know how thats right.

Police say theyve seen the gender reveal video and confirm -- its a boy.

And while neighbors are well aware of this explosive new trend they say this gender reveal is too much for a small town.

It was ridiculous, Sara said. I dont have any other words for it.

Briggs said investigators are looking into possible property damage and that there could be charges in this case.

We reached out to Torromeo Industries but we havent yet heard back.

Don't be dense. It was outside of normal operating hours and wasn't controlled. I've read a few articles on this. People felt the blast as far away as northern Massachusetts. It cracked at least one foundation. People thought it was an earthquake.

the amount of times weve had neighbours complaining our building works have cracked doors in their house and shit, without knowing the details of this one it def sounds like someone chancing it

I would note it also uses substantially less than 80lbs.

It is also sold as components rather than as the complete explosive, so it isn't regulated as an explosive. Seems weird but when you consider the number of common things that could be combined into explosives I guess it makes sense.

Maybe. Having a cracked foundation would suck though so if a massive explosion happened I totally imagine them being like oh jeez our foundation that was totally not cracked before is now ruined

But also it could have been on the verge of breaking from tension already and the blast could have been just enough to make the damage apparent.

Either way I say give them the benefit of the doubt.

With the right tools, it's probably not hard to tell the difference between an old crack and a new one. If it's a new crack, yeah, give them the benefit of the doubt, but if they're trying to blame an old crack on a recent event, hit em with insurance fraud and show no mercy.

Wow you seem pretty heartless

That kind of damage can potentially ruin a household financially so I wouldnt blame anyone for claiming the damage was caused by some stupid event like this, especially when insurance companies are massively insured themselves through reinsurance companies and paying for a cracked foundation means nothing to them.

Plenty of hardworking families get victimized by circumstances all the time through no fault of their own. Its not like they did anything wrong to have a crack in their foundation. If anything making a claim that it was caused by some idiots with an explosive makes things easier for the insurance company to sort out.

Eh, the law isn't going to drop the hammer on these fuckers nearly as hard as it should, so I genuinely hope the "enterprising" people of the area try to claim as much damages as possible and take them to the cleaners in civil court.

And yes, I'm still pissed off the dude in like AZ or CA whose gender reveal party started a giant wildfire got off so easily.

EDIT: The reason I couldn't remember which state had the giant wildfire from such a party is because the answer was... BOTH!

Has anything like this ever happened before?
Gender reveal parties started out innocently enough, with expecting couples popping balloons filled with colored powder or cutting blue or pink cakes. But as time has gone by, they have gotten more and more elaborate, and in some cases, dangerous.
In some cases, serious injury or even deaths have been reported. Three years ago, a Tannerite explosion at an Arizona gender reveal started a massive wildfire that burned 45,000 acres.
And in 2020, a pyrotechnic device used at a gender-reveal party caused a major wildfire in California.
