A cop walks into a bar, greets a seated female patron, is shoved so hard he loses his balance and is crudely told to get lost.
But Senior Constable Mark Follington now admits the story he wrote after violently arresting Anya Bradford in 2019 was very different to what occurred.
At the time of writing this narrative, I did it to the best of my knowledge without having viewed the (CCTV) footage, he told a Sydney court on Tuesday.

The court has heard Ms Bradford was metres away from Follington when she got up and walked out of a gaming room in Liverpools Golden Fleece Hotel.
Asked for her name, she replied f*** off and told police she didnt have ID and that she had a meeting to get to.
CCTV footage shows Follington grabbed her arm to prevent her leaving the pub, leading to a scuffle in which the Crown alleges the officer shoved the womans head into an ATM.

Ms Bradford kicked Follington, ran off and was pursued into the foyer of another building, where he pulled her out of a lift, another officer used pepper spray and the woman was handcuffed.

Asked what had brought Ms Bradford to his attention, Follington said her attitude in the hotel was akin to those who have a warrant out for their arrest.
When I was in the room, you could see I was focusing within the room, she had no eye contact with myself, he told the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.
People normally come up and say hello, she was keeping her eyes down.
To me, that starts to send a signal to me that this person is trying to hide from me.

Funny how you read the officer shoving her head into an atm as her hitting him.

Ignoring the part where he grabbed her and ended up shoving her head into an ATM, all of which was unwarranted?

Oh. Let's not even forget the fact that the article says the officer is the one being charged with evidence tampering. He's the one who did stuff wrong here, not the woman.

You dont need to give ID to police because they think its suspicious you didnt make eye contact or give them a friendly greeting.

Police have no right to harass you in a private establishment without probable cause or a warrant. She had every right to ignore them or tell them to fuck off. She does not need to waste her time with them.

So he viciously assaulted a woman for...not saying hello to him...and then chased her after she tried to run away, eventually catching her and ganging up on her with a buddy who pepper-sprayed her in the eyes. They then kidnapped her. And he lied about the whole thing to the police to try to get away with it.

No one would even try to defend such evil behavior if the guy wasnt wearing a badge.

The article is about the officer having lied about the incident, you misread the order of events, and tried to justify her arrest. That's defending the cop's actions. :l

And for what it's worth, she'd have probably still been arrested even if she greeted him. Trans people get arrested for simply being trans in public at night, under suspicion of prostitution. I've had friends and even a former roommate get caught up in that. Even if the charges get dropped, it's all just because of bigotry and negative assumptions about us.

So this police officer entered the room and approached someone who was minding her own business due to a perceived bad attitude. After asking her about personal details she didn't want to answer, she got up to leave - with a rude comment - and this prompted the officer to grab her arm and prevent her from walking away. After he grabbed her, she struggled to get her arm free, and this escalated to the point where the police officer smashed her head into an ATM. She fled into another building and was apprehended and pepper-sprayed. The officer then wrote a report stating that she attacked him first and shoved him so hard he lost his balance, necessitating the force he used against her.

So we can intuit from this story that the officer had no legal basis to approach this woman and did so because he perceived a bad attitude from her. Upon this woman not responding to his enquiries - to which she had no legal obligation to do, as she wasn't a suspect of a crime and was not otherwise causing a scene that required the intervention of a police officer - the officer grabbed her by the arm to prevent her from leaving and escalated the conflict. He then lied about it after the fact to make his actions look more justified.

I can buy that a part of his job is looking out for hostile people who might commit crimes. To a degree, he's justified in approaching someone who appears to be a risk. Policing can be a preventative measure, and if someone's being surly or aggressive police can intervene and ask for details.

But if he was justified in how he behaved and in how he reacted to the situation, why did he lie about the situation in a police report?

Why did he omit details that made him look bad and add details that made the other person look even worse than they already were?
