It's like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon except you run a graveyard. And also apparently take meat from corpses to cook burgers with (idk that's the first recipe I unlocked at the very beginning of the game >_>)

My friend played it a lot in the alpha(beta? Some prerelease format a while back) and he thought it was too grindy. I wonder if they fixed that

Still early on, I can see how it might be grindy already, also the crafting system is more convoluted than it needs to be >_> I need a circular saw but I can't see how to make that. And I know I could just look it up on a Wiki page but I would prefer to figure it out.

Lol that was lame. Had to go to the far end of the map to speak to a guy just to find out he wanted an item I had slotted into my chest at home and I didn't have enough time to get there and back before he was gone (because the day had changed).

Also maybe because I'm winging it but it's kind of annoying having to go back and forth between places >_> I needed iron parts to make an anvil (to... make iron parts with) but because I didn't have enough I had to go into town to buy them.

I know I got it on sale on Steam a while back but yeah I don't think it was a serious discount.

that game is a grind fest... you'd think once you set up the zombies to grind resources for you it would change but no.

The question is, is it a fun grindfest? that's what i haven't been able to see, like the game looks fun and it the sort of mindless "run around doing several layers of shit" but i haven't seen much to see if its fun or not

So far at like 2 hours in I haven't felt totally bored and normally if something is too grindy I will give up on it. Honestly have put more time into it so far than Stardew Valley lol but that could be because I might have barely had time to really get into SV before having to do something else.

It does get obnoxious trying to even figure out what you need and where to craft it at, could just be because I haven't played a game like this in ages but I hate needing three different workbenches to make wood stuff.

well, i sunk like 30 hours into it before getting tired. i'd say that stardew valley was more fun, but graveyard keeper was ok.

my biggest gripe, beyond the tedium that was alchemy, was the time constraint on every action. certain NPC that you need to talk to, to progress the story or your goal, will only appear at a certain time on a certain day each week. and to figure this out you're going to have to look up all of this shit on a wiki or spend weeks in game doing shit all because you're gated from progressing and you cant do anything but run around and sleep over and over.

on the plus side everyone in the game is a **** so enjoy feeding them burgers made from rotting corpse meat. sadly the one NPC that really deserves it only extorts you for carrots...

I really wanted to love this game, but ultimately it just felt way more shallow than it should have. It almost felt unfinished. Like I don't want to ruin it for you, but basically there's no reason to continue any of the activities it teaches you past the initial "here's how you do this" part. I felt like every bit of time spent growing/selling crops and making wine was just entirely pointless. Even the graveyard just stops having any reason whatsoever to keep building on, way before you've filled it up.

So its a thing of missing a window and having to wait a whole week doing whatever you were already doing with no progress until the next time, or do you have other activities you can unlock/do in the meantime that can help you progress? like to bring stardew as an example again, when its winter you can fish, mine, romance villagers, etc.

Well its a sandbox game right? kinda nice you have multiple options but i would like to hear more about this whole thing about activities being pointless, got any examples or why making money is pointless?

This is how I felt about stardew valley after I "finished" it but that was like 40 hours in lol

it kind of depends. i figured out early on that i needed to keep the wiki open and continuously reference it, so i figured out how to "properly" manage my time. but even then, especially early on, if i fucked up a step and got to the NPC late i'd end up with a week spent grinding for resources and doing nothing much else. you can always get a new body every day, or go out and chop wood/mine, but its pretty pointless sometimes if you're already full up on resources and the step you fucked up on would have allowed you to harvest better organs and make better graves for your church.

there's no romance, at least not for you, and the ones you can kind of help with are just strange. remember, everyone in this world is a ****. mining is just a resource grind, you get zombies to do it eventually. fishing is... its worse then stardew valley... i fucking hate it, and you've got to do it for some quests. and the combat/dungeon is bland.

the grind is real in the game, the main draw i found was the weird story and characters. it lost my interest eventually though.

The only things you can really buy are things you will be able to make yourself. The more ability you have to make money, the less stuff there is that you'll have any reason to buy.

And I get the whole sandbox thing, but it makes no sense if all you're doing is repeating the same activities with no variation or progression. I spent a lot of time cultivating gold star crops and having a regular cycle to sell to the merchant each week thinking there would be a next level to it. There never was.

The game pulled me in with it's presentation and quirky sense of humor, and it was really funny at parts, it just feels like it fell way short of what it needed to be. It was a half baked game.

And another thing that really annoyed me was that at some point it just stopped counting my achievements. It has several "get X number of this thing" achievements and they all stopped counting. Minor gripe, but come on man

Ah i was mentioning romance in stardew since its another "activity" you can do instead of farming crops or tending your animals (which also seem pointless after a while once you get sprinklers and a season's worth of crops is more money than a year worth of animal materials...)

honestly i've been debating on getting it but i guess ill wait for a huge sale or something because im not completely sold but i get the itch...

How hard is it to get gold stars and shit? you make it sound like you actually invested a lot of time and effort to get there which seems... fine i guess progression wise?

@monkmith

Maybe it was a QOL update or something but now they tend to tell you when characters appear, and if you look at the Known NPCs tab of your journal, the day that an NPC is available appears next to their name (if they aren't there 24/7).

Buggy game that has some cool ideas and humor but gets bogged down in the grind. The DLC with zombies helps to alleviate it some but it can still get tiresome

Also the dungeon fucking sucks. I really hated that tedious shit

So it looks like the last DLC, which they say added 8-12 hours of gameplay, came out in November and then there was a patch since then.

I haven't encountered any bugs, it's just missing some things that are making me go a little crazy. Like, I wish you could see what the blueprints for a workbench required from the Technologies menu, because it seems like the only way to figure it out is to go there in person (kind of a pain since different things are not located right next to each other) or look it up on the Wiki page.

Also I totally zoned out and missed the day to meet with the Merchant lmao why did I do that

ALSO a donkey took a dump in front of my morgue and I cleaned it up and got free carrot seeds so that's pretty cool but that's not what I wanted to say, what I wanted to say is that there are tutorial pop-ups for like the first ten minutes of play but then after that they kind of let you figure everything out on your own which is also kind of confusing lol. Like the Science points are not necessarily intuitive (everything in the crafting screen says "Research X item using # Science Points", except *some* of those items actually *grant* you Science points that you use to research other stuff. It's not really clear imo).

You're going to find that one recipe leads to another leads to another and it gets old quick. Best advice is to make prayer of prosperity fast so you can get money from the cult quick and then buy books of blue tech points from the astrologer every whatever day that old bastard shows up. Otherwise it is going to take your forever to unlock certain abilities/recipes

That's good cause you're going to need it since some of the quest items cost unseemly amounts of gold compared to the paltry amount you make from being an organ harvester. Get familiar with farming quick cause that's one of the best ways to make money later with zombies. Then there's the tavern DLC which helps too

And on the note of the final DLC apparently they really fucked up some of the choices in it so you might be advised to check a walkthrough if you don't want to ruin your playthrough since there's no way to back
