So I'm voting today, dropping off my ballot at a box. In WA we do it by mail, but I just realized that they don't have you sign on the actually ballot at all, just on the envelope you send in.

That means there is no real way to tell how many people voted if any fraud does happen. Seriously we need to go digital at this point, or at least both, that way the vote count can be checked to make sure the numbers are not wildly wrong.

The way it is right now, if anyone gets ahold of the envelops, and opens them, they can replace the ballots with ones that vote the way they want, then just send it in and nobody will ever know.

That is crazy. Why are we using such out dated methods to vote at this point?

Washington's vote by mail is one of the most secure in the nation and there is no sign of rampant voter fraud occurring in the 40 years its been used there

Envelopes that have been tampered with will be rejected.

It's intentional that your ballot, once removed from the envelope, is not tied to your identity.

My state allows me to check online if my ballot has been accepted and counted.

Yeah you can't really check how somebody voted, just that they voted.

Its normal to just have the signature on the envelope, that way a person can verify your signature but the ballot itself can be counted by machine if necessary

Even European nations made mail-in ballots illegal due to fraud.

The Postal System is one of the most incompetent systems in the country, with postal workers throwing ballots away, mailing multiple ballots to people, no actual way to check to see if the votes are valid, and mail generally getting lost.

I mean, I don't know, I didn't say you should ONLY vote digitally but it could be used as a backup and to compare.

As far as it being secure, do they even monitor the dropoff boxes? Mine was as a deserted fire station, pretty far from anywhere a camera could be that I saw.

Also...WHY don't you have people sign on the ballot as well, so it can be checked to make sure it's theirs? I don't see a negative to that. I guess it kinda prevents someone from telling who you voted for, but...does that really need to be kept secret?

Seems crazy to me, not to have an extra level of security that is pretty easy to do. At least let people have the OPTION of A: signing their ballot and B: Having it digitally processed so they can see what their vote was counted as. A machine has to count the votes anyway, so why not actually have it optionally (if you enter a number or fill a box etc) record the votes under your name so you (and optionally anyone) can see how you voted?

That seems like common sense to me.

You literally never leave your fucking basement while wasting taxpayer dollars in the process you cretin. You've spent well over a decade on here pedaling right-wing nonsense so it's not too surprising you're doing it in this topic as well

For some people that anonymity could be very relevant.

It should be mentioned I lived in CA most of my life and I volunteered at polling places for about 20 of em (still have the pins) so the whole mail in/drop box voting in WA is both new to me (seemed weird 4 years ago as well) and very different.

At least with the voting booths in CA, it was a computer program that took the votes, and it identified who was voting each time. I get that could be tampered with, but so could the computer that actually TALLYs the votes in WA, so that isn't really any different.

Meanwhile the votes are not nearly as secure (or don't seem like it to me), but whatever, people here are fine with it, so I won't rock the boat...but it's weird.

I wouldn't have volunteered this year for sure, due to the virus and me being high risk, and I wouldn't have 4 years ago due to my wife's illness, but I did every other year I was able to before that.

Btw, I never said there was any voter fraud, nor do I think there is, I just think the current setup is stupid and could easily be improved on, and I REALLY think we should have the option of seeing how our votes were counted.

There is no reason not to do that at this point, especially if it's optional.

I think it's to protect you. If people knew I voted for Biden where I lived I could face some small degree of harassment.

I get that, but make it optional to have the info shared or even collected. That way in situations like yours, you can do it the old way, but in most places you don't have to worry about that, and everyone can see how their vote was tallied. Makes it much harder to skew the system etc, if everyone can actually see their votes. Say 90% of votes are down for that and 10% are not, you could still ensure that almost every vote was counted correctly that way.

Going digital is probably the worst thing we could do to our voting system.

I'm not really trying to disagree with you. It's just it's better to assume anything on the internet is going to come out at some point, especially something as "valuable" as votes. I personally don't really know how important it is to keep it secret.

Yeah, I get what your saying. I don't give a flying fart who knows I voted for Biden or who knows I voted for Schwartzenager etc, I vote who I want and screw what people think.

I realize some people are not like that, and in some cases people can lose their jobs (Even though thats illegal) or not be promoted or even worse crap if they vote a certain way in a certain district.

That being said, making it optional would avoid that problem, but whatever, doubt it'll matter with our 2 party system anyway. The wealthy are the ones who determine who our choices are, so it's basically voting for Kraang or Krang.
